Which Puppy should I use?

#1 Post by vmars316 »

Greetings,
Newbie: win7 x64

I would like to Create a Puppy Boot CD.
And then USB Boot.
From: http://www.puppylinux.com/download/index.html
But which Puppy should I use "Wary 5.3 , Slacko 5.3.3 , Precise 5.4.1" .

Iniitally, I want to use Linux for a EmergencyRestoreUSB .
Then I want to try program development with HotBasic.

Pls, can someone suggest which version might work well for this ?
Thanks...vmars316

:D Hello,
Well, any one of those would serve you well, but I`d go with Wary, as it is geared towards older hardware, IE more drivers etc.. Also is a bit more mature.. But thats just my 2 cents.. :D
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world

Wary, as it is geared towards older hardware
You mean, In the sense that wary includes newest stuff plus all the old stuff ?
I wouldn't want to skimp on the new stuff.
Thanks...Vernon

Here is the basic rule: run the newest Puppy that works well on your hardware and meets your needs.

Only you can really make the decision.

Of the 7 Puppies I formerly used on my old 2003 PC [Lupu was my number1]...
1. Slacko-5.3.3.1 [my new number1] was the only Puppy [of those 7] that also booted OK on my new 2012 PC [64-bit hardware].

On the new 2012 PC, I've now found the following that work OK on it:
2. Dpup-Exprimo-5.x.3.4.2.8
3. Racy-5.3
4. Precise-5.4.1
5. FatDog64-600-Firefox
6. [Caro]Lina-003
7. MacPup-529

How would I know if it works well with my hardware ?

Are you saying, just keep installing until I find one that works ?
Surely, someone out there is running Puppy on Win7 x64 .

Hmm...
Ya, I could do that. Make a separate BootableCD,
1 for Wary, and
1 for Slacko.

If you're anything like me you'll find Puppy quite addictive and even when you do find one that runs well and does everything you could want you still won't be able to resist trying 'at least' one more just to see how it goes. And then another, and another...

Have fun, it's great here. :)

Do you get the right video resolution for your monitor? Does your wifi work? Do you have sound?

It sounds like you want a guaranteed answer before investing in a CD. That's impossible to do if the only hardware description is "Win 7 x64".

also bear in mind that puppy is free by the generosity of the developers so it will only cost the price of a burnt cd to try

I have collected many (many) puppy builds just for fun and have tried plenty but my fall-back favourite is slacko 5.3.3 soon to be replaced with 5.4

on old ibm t21's, new lenovo t61, amd dual core desktop and eeepc's it worked well on all

I have just converted somebody today to puppy, he spent ALL day getting a gateway laptop (repair) installed with vista, along comes puppy, first boot with everything working less than 2 minutes, after frugal install 35 seconds

again EVERYTHING worked immediately

have a bash with one of the newer builds from live cd so it won't interfere with your win7 and have a plan, you will be amazed!!

good luck

:)

Thanks All:
Ok,
I am Posting this with Seamonkey on Slacko Boot from CD.
I used Frisbee to get connected to my wireless router.

Wow, you are sure right about Puppy being addictive.
Lots of great software already installed.
I haven't tackled email yet.
Anyone else using live.com/hotmail ?

btw: Is there a 'BASIC Programming Language' for Puppy ?

Maybe tomorrow, I'll try Wary.

I booted up with only CD (slacko).
And saved a *.abw file.
Where did it save that file.
Or did it ?
Or, Do I need to allocate some space for Puppy on hardDrive ?

THanks...vm

Do it again and read the Save As dialog carefully. It will tell you where it saved the file. It's probably in /root.

So the next time I Boot from CD,
it can find it ?

What I would like to know is
Where on my computer is "/root" ?

And can I see/find it via Win7 ?

Thanks...Vernon

If you haven't made a save file, then the file disappears when you shut down. If you want the file to be accessible from Windows, you need to save it to a partition that Windows can read.

Read here for some basic Puppy information.

When you shut down Slacko, you should see a dialog about creating a save file? Did you not see it?

Which Slacko version are you using?

How do you shut down your computer?

Ok, yes, I saved it to DVD.

I am now trying to:
"How to obtain and install flash-Puppy"
Using info from: http://www.puppylinux.com/flash-puppy.htm
But there are so many questions(prompts), I get lost.

Disappearing programs:
And too often, as I move my cursor around, on the screen,
program gui(s) disappear. And downright shutdown.
Seamonkey 2.9.2 works fine for a while, the disappears.

Configure Touchpad:
I am thinking that maybe(for disappearing prob), I'm having Touchpad probs.
Is there a way to 'dummy down' my touchpad (like I do in windows) ?
So it only responds to 1-finger movements ? (no TAP, no Pinch, etc..)

create an ISO on the USBflashDrive
Does this "How to obtain and install flash-Puppy" just create an ISO on the USBflashDrive ?

Is .iso the only way to get slacko to Bootup ?

IsoEditor
I can see that in the future, I will need a IsoEditor,
to be able to Add and Remove programs/files from .iso .

Is there a freeware windows IsoBuster program .
Maybe I should create USB Boot, ahead of going to Slacko to do it.

Thanks Folks...vm
