Fatdog64-610 testing 20 Nov 2012 (finished)

#1 Post by kirk »

Edit 29 Nov 2012: 610 Final is released here. Thanks to everyone for testing it.

James and myself are pleased to announce Fatdog64-610. This release contains some package updates, a few new features, and many bug fixes.

Updates:
* libdrm-2.4.39
* libxcb-1.8.1
* Mesa-9.0-x86_64
* xf86-input-evdev-2.7.3
* xf86-input-keyboard-1.6.2
* xf86-input-mouse-1.8.1
* xf86-input-synaptics-1.6.2
* xf86-video-ati-6.14.6
* xf86-video-intel-2.20.13
* xf86-video-nouveau-1.0.4
* xf86-video-nv-2.1.20
* Seamonkey-2.13.1
* Firefox-16.0.1
* alsa-lib-1.0.26
* alsa-plugins-1.0.26
* alsa-utils-1.0.26
* VlC-2.0.4
* Flash Player 11.2 r202
* Geany-1.22 w/plugins
* Linux-3.4.18
* qt-4.8.1 (partial in iso, full package available as pet)
* Transmission-2.73
* peasyport 1.7
* scanner-share 1.2
* Pburn-3.7.7
* Remove Transcoder FFMPEG GUI, VLC handles conversions nicely.

New features:
* Hacked Lxpanel volumealsa plugin to have a right click option to launch alsamixer.
* Hacked Lxpanel cpu plugin to have a right click option to launch lxtask.
* transmission running as spot
* multisession: can save session without having to shutdown
* spin down disks before shutdown (prevent data loss on usb disks)
* gtksudoer configuration file for gtksu, options for non-root to run root-only programs
* Add right-click option to wpa_gui to launch the Network Wizard. Some behavior of
wpa_gui has changed. See new "How to connect to a network" in the FAQs.
* Add a very hacked down HAL, just enough for Flash player on Amazon Prime and other web sites.
* Replace Kino with Avidemux-2.6git
* Added ELANTECH and SENTELIC touch pad support to kernel.

Our normal host, ibiblio.org, is currently having space issues. So the iso and devx files can be found here:

http://www.mydrive.ch/

User name: download@fatdog64
Password: fatdog

Please note that during testing only the Seamonkey iso is available. A Firefox-16.0.1pet is available on the ibiblio repo. Also the ATI and Nvidia pets have not be updated yet.

Please use a new savefile. Move or delete your old savefile, or boot with savefile=none.

If you have Broadcom wireless and need the proprietary driver, it is included, but will not load automatically. To use it open the Control Panel and select the System tab. Then click on Manage servers and services, then click on BC-wl and then Enable and Start.

Running from live dvd with a savefile.
I installed the nvidia proprietary driver and configured it to use two
monitors, twinview worked but spread across both displays.I chose
separate x screens and it wasn't working well so I compiled fluxbox
and it's working better, lxpanel is still working on monitor1.

If you are downloading through your web browser, you are logged in as the unprivileged user spot. So the only place you can save is in spot's folder. After the download, you can move the file to its desired location.

IIRC, when you create a save file, you are given the option to change this.

thanks

popped the frugal alongside slacko on a small partition reserved for pups which then didn't allow enough space for a download

not used to not having folder access!!

it is much quicker than my 5.3.3. slacko but would like chromium and a few other pets like x11 & tightvnc

unfortunately I'm not yet skilled enough to compile stuff myself :(

wake on lan gui from the forum appeared to install ok along with x11server, the others didn't though

if I could have the above and I could work out the access issues it would probably become my mainstream build

nice work all the same and always amazed by the effort that goes into our puppies

:)

X11vnc is included. It's in the Control Panel under the Desktop tab. Click on "Share your desktop".

To connect use "VNC Remote Desktop Viewer". It's under network in the menu. Enter the IP address of the computer you want to connect to.

Tightvnc server aka Xvnc is in the repo ("vncserver").

Xvnc doesn't have any dependencies, but the start script ("vncserver") requires Perl at the time being. I will re-work it as a shell script later.

Hello Kirk & jamesbond

Thank you for this. It seems to be working well so far, but a few things I have noticed:

Unchecking run WPA_Gui, via the control panel, does not remove the icon from the taskbar. I only have wired ethernet, so I don't need it.

The panel is the version without Autohide. I loaded the lxpanel 0.5.9 pet that you posted previously and that worked.

glxgears is 719 in 610 beta compared with 903 in 600. There is nothing unusual in xorg.0.log. Maybe mesa 9 doesn't like my RS880G chipset. I don't play 3d games, so it doesn't matter, anyway.

2d rendering acceleration is the important thing for video playback. I'll test VLC next.

thanks again

LateAdopter,
Unchecking run WPA_Gui, via the control panel, does not remove the icon from the taskbar.
If you right click on wpa_gui in the taskbar and select Quit, all of the processes except wpa_gui are killed. This is different from 601, with 610 decided to leave it running so you could restart everything or launch the Network Wizard from it.
glxgears is 719 in 610 beta compared with 903 in 600.
Glxgears is not for benchmarking. I'm surprised it's not 60.

Billtoo,

Did your Nvidia computers boot to a desktop without installing the proprietary driver?

Yes, but the nouveau doesn't work well with two monitors, loading a program shows up on both screens.
I never tried the zarfy utility, maybe that would have changed things?
The latest proprietary nvidia driver is working well though.

You can also save to /tmp/ as spot. Benefit of that is that you dont have to worry about save file space if you are using a frugal install.

Hello :), I am a newbie and I just installed fatdog64 610 beta1. I liked it but I am having trouble installing skype on it. I am aware that 32 bit pet packages will not work. I found a skype sfs file for fatdog64 which I found on ibiblio. However, it seems that it does not work on this fatdog64 version or maybe I am not doing something right. I also noticed that if I try to load the skype sfs file using the sfs launcher, the sfs file cannot be chosen because it's unclickable.

Can you post the link to that skype you found? The sfs in ibiblio is old (skype version 2.x) and it is meant for Fatdog 500 but it still works in Fatdog 610 in certain conditions - I know because I use it. Notably it won't work if you use the graphical login manager.

If it can't be downloaded from sfsmanager, just download it manually from ibiblio or one of its mirrors. Then put it to the root of your save partition, and load it using System SFS Loader you find in the control panel.

Someone has contributed skype 4.x SFS for Fatdog, it is somewhere in the Fatdog 600 thread, but I haven't got the time to play with it yet.

Billtoo, my nvidia desktop isn't connected with two monitors so I can't test it there. But I have used zarfy (which is shown as "Display Properties" in Control Panel) with radeon open source driver and I can easily choose to either extend the screen, or show the same screen. You should give it a try :)

cheers!

Here is the link http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/sfs/50 ... 2.0.35.sfs

I even tried getting skype 4.0 sfs from the lighthouse 64 site. Unfortunately, both of the sfs didn't worked. I moved the sfs files to mnt/home and get an error whenever trying to load the sfs files from the the launcher. It was like an error in mounting.
