How to run MInecraft?

#1 Post by kalebmullins »

I can't figure out how to get minecraft to run on puppy 528-005. I think my main problem is installing Java. I can't figure out how to install it. (please provide links with your explanation). I have downloaded minecraft for linux based distros, but when i try to run it, it says something like nothing to run it with.
Thanks

Dewbie

Hi Kaleb
Had a day of work so did some testing
Using the jre-1.7u9-i586.sfs does not work well in 528 or 528-005

But

re-1.6.31-slacko.sfs works very well in 528 but not in 528-005
When using the slacko pet rember to symlink absolute the java file from /usr/java/jre/bin to /root/myapplications/bin

Have tested jre-1.6u37-i586.sfs in 528-005 no go
in 528 works fins so its something to do with 528-005

So burn a lupu528.

I cannot understand why wont work in 528 unless its a kernal problem!!

Hi
I hope these notes will help other people on how I tested minecraft
Minecraft will not work for me in 528-005

Computer specs
cpu pent p4 3.00Gz
1GB ram
HTOP reports no swap being used.

Precise puppy frugal install
Fresh install
Added jre-1.6.31-slacko.sfs with the sfs-load-on-the-fly
Reboot
Console java not found
Symlinked absolute the bin directory in /usr/java/jre1.6.0_31
to
/root/my-applications/bin
Tested minecraft
Works fine

Using jre-1.7.0-20110811.sfs shows the known bug of not being able to type the logon information into the first minecraft window, (keyboard and mouse inactive).

Using puppy 525 Frugal install
Fresh install.
sfs-load-on-the-fly installed using sfs menu (sfs load experimental) link in quickpet
Installed sfs jre-1.6.31-slacko.sfs
Minecraft sign on then black screen
Checked /root/.minecraft/crash-reports
Top line in crash report
org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Could not init GLX
Typed in console glxgears result not found
Quickpet drivers>>test graphics card recomend x-org high 1.1 lucid install
reboot
in console glxgears now works 3501 frames in 5 seconds.
Minecraft Works fine

Removed sfs jre-1.6.31-slacko.sfs
Installed sfs jre-1.7.0-20110811.sfs
Black screen after sigin on, NO error report in /root/.minecraft

My conclusions are
Minecraft works in Precise and 525 frugal installs
Have tested also in an origional 528 and works fine so something is diffrent in 528-005 (the origional 528 cannot be downloaded from main site or mirrors!!!)
Had to install video via quickpet in 525 but not precise for GLX.
jre-1.6.31-slacko.sfs works
jre-1.7.0-20110811.sfs does not work
Precise could not find java hence the symlink so $PATH has a directory difrence.

I have tried running Minecraft on several of the older puppies including 4.31 and 5.2.8-005 and found them to be a dead loss.
I use Precise 5.7.1 which you can get here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/precise-5.7.1/.
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is available through the Puppy Package Manager.
A tip: Create a directory in your /mnt/home called Minecraft and then create a link to /root/.minecraft. That way your games don't fill up your savefile.
Enjoy
