How to do a frugal install with Windows 8? (Solved)

#1 Post by topaz »

Hi
I have people asking if you can do a frugal install on a windows 8 computer??

Would the frugal install boot from CD to inatialise the loading from hard drive.??

Will grub work to boot win 8 due to reported MBR problems.??

Has any one tried this???

Cheers in advance

I guess

I presume you know how to modify menu.lst to boot a frugal puppy.

No - I have never tried this.

Hi
Yes I know about grub.
Instructions are useful but windows 8 does not use nfts but refs.
I believe you have to use Easybcd 2.x.
You only get basic for free as the pro version you have to pay for.

Still looking for someone who has managed to boot frugal on win 8.

Have just got this quote of yahoo answers

"To avoid yet another costly anti-trust suit similar to those brought against it by the USA and European Union, Microsoft was forced to allow UEFI to be disabled by end-users."

http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread ... sable-UEFI

may be the answer to all our probs

Not sure what turning off will do to a win 8 install

Not having heard of REFS I did a search and found this blog from msdn.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012 ... -refs.aspx

I don't think you are right about Windows 8 using REFS at the moment. It only comes with Windows Server for a start and it quite specifically says in the blog that you cannot boot from REFS at this time.

The UEFI problem, when it exists, is an additional problem to overcome before you start dual booting. This problem is how to configure your PC so that it will allow booting anything other than Windows. We are learning on the hop here because it was only last week that Jesse at Distrowatch outlined the difficulties involved to overcome the UEFI problem. Microsoft may have allowed it to be disabled but they do not tell anybody the process of how to go about it.

I think it is a little early for detailed instructions for dual booting with Windows 8. I think the free version of Easy BCD is going to work with a non UEFI machine however.

so Ms has made some agreement with Intel
that their Atom CPUs is an exception?

How come that is that way? Is not Atom
the least power hungry CPU Intel have
so that is most unfortunate.

I plan to buy a computer when they
have so low power they don't need fans
to run cool even in hot environ :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

This only applies to PC's which come pre installed with windows 8
A bare-bones pc should be ok.

They only sell Atom laptops and net books
preinstalled with win 8 here now.

So I seem out of luck then?
I do have the money to buy one
but if it is impossible to get puppy on it
then it is not worth it.

And I prefer to wait for the ones without fan.
So thanks
