Magoo Pup v5 & v6 Pups with a 10-foot user interface - 2012

#1 Post by ETP »

This Pup is intended to provide a non-intimidating, easily accessible interface of basic functions suitable for the elderly new to computing. As such it includes Skype to stay in touch with relatives and a customised version of the Magoo dotpet described here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=82120

Fontwizard and a range of tweaks are also incorporated for best clarity. Many functions such as Internet & Skype access are available by just pressing a single key.

It is based on a re-master of the recently released Precise Puppy 5.4.1.1. All of the original applications and utilities are still present. A Quick Start Guide is attached.

Items Removed and tweaked:

All desktop icons leaving only the drive icons & the save icon when created. The default GTK theme (Stark Blueish) was adjusted for better highlighting. Fonts & themes have already been pre-set for maximum clarity once the setup procedure has been implemented.

Items added:

A wallpaper suitable for a wide range of monitor resolutions.

Magoo (Netbook) Pup v6 ISO

#4 Post by ETP »

Further testing has shown that whilst the v5 pup is fine on 13 inch screens and above, netbook users may prefer something a little less imposing.

Now available on the server therefore is the v6 pup specifically for netbooks. It is smaller and simpler in that there is only one menu. A menu item off desktop has been added to re-launch the Magoo interface if it is closed. (It includes the MK129 pet)

Hi ETP - just a quick compliment on Magoo V6 - I'm enjoying it's clean fresh look and I've found it quite useful for Facebook and also for working with the Mediafire website which seems to cause me problems on other puppies. (I'm using Seamonkey as the default - I know lots of others like Chrome but I really haven't got into that yet...).
I'll keep you posted how I go with my dad - he's had so much on his plate that he's only just now getting back into learning about what the computer can do for him. Hopefully he'll be a PC pro by the end of the year!

Magoo - Netbook - Pup v6

#6 Post by ETP »

Hi greengeek,
It is good to hear from you and to learn that you are finding a use for V6. I find it very user friendly and prefer it to V5 even on a large screen. For my own use I have only installed a few pets as follows, all of which are available on the "Mydrive" server.

Code: Select all

=== /root/.packages/user-installed-packages ===

tempiconsvg-0.14-i486|tray temperature monitor
chromium-25.0.1323.1-i686-1sl|Browse the Web
pupsaveconfig-2.2.5|PupSave personal storage setup
flashplayer11-11.2.202.261|Adobe Flash Player 11 browser plugin and Preferences. Note, this may not work on older PCs, use instead an earlier 11.x or even 10.x
thunderbird-16.0.1|Thunderbird mail reader
You will recall the display issue with Abiword where upon launching only a very small window appears. This is an Abiword issue and applies to all pups. The fix is as follows - substituting your own resolution for 1920x1080.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#exec abiword "$@"	# original line in /usr/local/bin/defaultwordprocessor
exec abiword -g 1920x1080 "$@"	# modified line using desired resolution.

Nice, my wife thinks she MAY be able to use it.
She wanted to know what the big round blue button was for though.
I think it may be one I will "Accidently" leave in the CD drive of the computers Ido that are given away for charity.

Hi ETP; A Q about vers. 5 and 6 ( 203 MB download, don`t want to get the wrong one...).

My friend has a newer full size HP laptop, would version 6 be the best one?

I noticed ver. 6 labeled for netbooks, so it may not be correct.

Hi sunburnt,

Yes, go for version 6. It is fine even on a 1920x1080 panel and more user friendly. Version 5 is really for people with poor eyesight.

Yes we can.
Palemoon is launched. Just a first try. Perhaps not so easy for second round.
It's for fun of course.
