did you test SFS's

#1 Post by oui »

Hi

ArchPup is actually only 77,8 MB "fat".

And kann manage till 20 SFS with or without save file.

To start a SFS on fly, only hit on it's icon in thunar and select the application "SFS-load-on-the-fly". It is faster as to select the SFS in the application "SFS-load-on-the-fly"!

But all SFS's don't start easily in ArchPup... Sorry, it is so!

For this reason, I open a thread to register the SFS tested as able to start in the actual version of ArchPup1204 as it was last edited by simargl on Sun Dec 02, 2012 5:02 am.

Please register only and discuss problems (if problems appear) in the main thread:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=82494

(of course you can add here a link to your event. message in the main thread! It is probably usefull!)

Kind regards

SFS from the fast depot from LazY Puppy 2.0.2 Final

#2 Post by oui »

Following the invitation from RSH in his thread

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=74544

I did test divers SFS from LazY Puppy 2.0.2 Final if starting also in ArchPup-1024 on my PC and can report positive news concerning that. Not in all cases but in very useful and interesting cases.

The depot from Smoke where they are to find (read please in the above linked thread to get the actual active link) is extremely fast!

Please read the very interesting comments from RSH concerning the use of SFS compared with program installation!

Following SFS also starts:

LP2_Merkaartor0172.sfs

after I did add following dependencies in /usr/bin:

libpng12.so.0.44.0 including link libpng12.so.0 (141,7 kB) pointed on it

Following SFS did also starts one time, the next time not, and only audio part!:

LP2_vlc-1.1.10-i686-lucid525.sfs

after I did add following dependencies in /usr/bin

libhal-storage.so.1.0.0 including link libhal-storage.so.1 (38,7 kB) and
libhal.so.1.0.0 including link libhal.so.1(67,2 kB) pointed on them

error in case of (some) videos can be for ex.:
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "h264". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "mp4a". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
The size is only an indication of approx. size depending of the place where you will find those dir's, indication to think about to remaster the needed libraries. above libraries are really very small and would not change dramatic the size of the Puplet!

___

Note: if you, as I, never use some save file, it is the big advantage of Archpup-1204 compared with all other (new) Puppy's in my opinion   ,

you will probably have to remaster it to add
a/ a flashplayer.so into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins or into /.../seamonkey/plugins (it can also be outside also external of the Puplet directly in the partition where the Puplet is loged itself, so this package can be used in exactly the same configuration by different Puplets (read more here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 789#668789 )
b/ a concise /root/.mozilla/seamonkey with some bookmarks as well, perhaps, not very critical logins / passwords that you have, to avoid the daily tipping of them! If you do so, only those private data can be find after starting each new session: you have so a Puppy with high discretion!

you probably also know this one (I don't know some SFS for it   !):

mtPaint 3.40

(it is not already included in the iso file of ArchPup-1204!

Note: as you now can see, well installed Wine applications appear in the regular OpenBox menu (to much in case of mTpaint: I can't find the in the menu now announced mTpaint handbook! Probably because online visualization?)

Yes, recycle from your old M$-Windows the excellent small applications like sound recorder, etc., and, of course, fonts (they will increase the quality of your doc's in wine)

Hi, oui.

Thanks much for testing compatible SFS's. This will save people a lot of time. (Will get to ArchPup 1204 later, I have to concentrate on other things at the moment.)

SFS's from fast depot from LH Pup 500

The file hierarchy of this depot contains a lot of highly interesting SFS! Please test it yourself! I only test those I can need myself! And pls don't forget to report here about event. success!

http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/500/

KompoZer
http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/500/Kompozer-0.8b.sfs

From same depot did I also try

4-KDE-4.4.4-G.sfs (450MB)
http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/500/4-KDE-4.4.4-G.sfs

together with
Kdenlive-0.7.8c.sfs (93 MB)
http://www.lhpup.org/sfs/500/Kdenlive-0.7.8c.sfs

My success is this evening is: both start

but it doesn't work :x (exceptet kcalc  )

for this reason I did a separate message! Try it and search a way to use it correctly

(I will do it later as this version is already obsolete for me, I have the most actual test version of KDE with Calligra installed in NuTyx on the hard disk, and will not actually spend more time for that)

The start is only possible if you add following libraries / links:

libfam
liblzma.so.0
libpng14.so.14 (has to be libpng14 ! a link from libpng15 is not enough!)
libEGL.so.1

Do not expect to much actually of both!

Thank you very much RSH, for your following comment:

Opera SFS module from http://terryphillips.org.uk/operasfs.htm works,
though it's listed in wrong menu category Other. This is latest version 12.12 maintained
by Terryphi, if you like opera and want to avoid using space in savefile this is suggested option.

You may want to check the Tinycore Linux SCM list.
SCMs are SFSs that contain applications with all its dependencies (unless you see a "ProgramName.csm.dep" file).
A lot run fine in puppies, after you rename them to sfs and add /apps/bin in your $PATH.
If you are more adventurous you can try their TCZs which are also SFSs, though there you must be careful with dependencies.
Of course if you like many SFSs and running "live" all the time then TinycoreLinux is designed for that (can handle gazillions of SFSs) and does it very well!

Hi,
I tried this with audacious-gtk2, and it's working :D. SFS size is 1 MB smaller than SCM
even with only gzip compression, don't know why. In screenshot are shown commands
needed for converting if someone wants to try with other scm files.

Edit: I tried this with some other modules, gimp works but it's version 2.6.11 and needs
libpng12 and jpeg62. Some of them are very large, for example thunar is 9.1 MB ,
so probably converting those modules is not worth the effort.

That is exactly the problem with the autonomous SFSs in other distros. Is like compiling everything "static".
In TC is much faster to load and unload SFSs so is just like opening an up. Is designed around this idea.

I also come looking for help on the Smash Filesystems. I double-checked my MD5's (downloading with a working Puppy 4.1.3) and they're correct. Still the ArchApps.sfs won't load. (Doesn't give an error, it just hangs.) I am copying the files from /dev/usb1/archpup/ to /root/ before loading the SmashFS.

Hi, you shouldn't copy Sfs module to /root, move it to /mnt/home or /mnt/home/archpup. Did you
try to load some other sfs files?
