(By the way, to avoid confusion, does the name of the Precise 5.4 thread (currently named "Precise Puppy 5.4 and 5.4.2") need to be corrected, and should this thread -- the real Precise 5.4.2 thread -- be made sticky?)

Hi backi,

Although there are a number of reports of the symptoms you are experiencing (text characters turning into little squares when installing a package) from folks running in PUPMODE 2 (full install), this is the first I have seen for PUPMODE 13.

Barry has a fix for users running PUPMODE 2, but it applies only to that mode.

Since many things could cause the text characters to be corrupted, your problem may be something totally unrelated to the problem PUPMODE 2 users ran into. But because it happens during package installation (as was the case for the other problem), it could well be related to the other problem.

That said, I have not yet found anything in the code that would explain what you are seeing in PUPMODE 13.

I have no experience with PUPMODE 13, so may not be able to help with this. But I can suggest a few items of information that you could provide which might help someone else figure this out.

1. The problem experienced by PUPMODE 2 users also caused the desktop icons to change. Did this also happen for you?

2. Do you remember what package you were installing when you ran into this problem?

3. What output do you get for these commands?

Code: Select all

ls -ld /lib/i386-linux-gnu
ls -ld /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu
(This will tell us if those items are still symbolic links, as they should be, or if the installation of the package changed them to directories or removed them entirely.)

4. What output do you get for this command?

Code: Select all

grep -E "PUP_LAYER|SAVE_LAYER" /etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE
(These variables are used by the installation script, so we need to see if they are set correctly.)
Try SP 5.4.2.3.

twenty reboots. Looks good. As I've said, the frequency of black
screens was about 1 in 5 so 20 in a row seems convincing that
you've fixed the problem. It was nice to see a consistent 13
seconds from the last startup screen message to the GUI. Has
the feeling of solidity now.
Good!

Futwerk has made some new Precise wallpapers.
They are located here:

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Hi,

I upgraded my multisession DVD direct from 5.4 to 5.4.3.

With the minor exception that desktop icons and positions
and some file icons needed resetting - all goes very well.

I will report in the unlikely event of any problem arising.
However, I have not experienced any problems with 5.4 so
I'll continue using it and just test 5.4.3.

My regards and thanks

Concerning my wireless problems on the latest versions of Precise,
Racy and Slacko, one of the problems is a sudden drastic drop
in download speed while surfing. Pemasu's advice does seem to work
but I found that the power off command must be issued at each startup.

I added the following (last) lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit

iwconfig wlano rate 24M
iwconfig wlan0 freq 2.437G
iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
iwconfig wlan0 power off

Then after startup I issue a iwconfig and see that the rate is indeed 24M
and power management is off. I dropped the rate down from 54M for extra
reliability.

I googled on the topic and discovered that I'm far from the only Linux
user who's been driven nuts with the power management bug. It
looks like I'm fortunate to have a way to work around it.

gnome-mplayer blue screen

#190 Post by broomdodger »

preicse 5430
manual frugal

I went to ted.com to see a video, it played in Seamonkey, but would retrain because of a slow internet. So I decided to download and watch off-line.

http://www.ted.com/talks/robin_chase_ex ... r_car.html

downloaded the talk in small format
RobinChase_2012G-light.mp4

It opened in: gnome-mplayer 1.0.3

The sound was there but no video, only blue screen.

I tried the same mp4 in racy5300, it played sound and video.
MPlayer SVN-r34150-snapshot-4.3.4

I also tried the same mp4 in wary5492, it played sound and video.
MPlayer SVN-r34150-snapshot-4.3.4

Any ideas?

Launch the video in mplayer from console. You might get some useful debug informatin in console. That video played just fine in Upup Precise using same Mplayer - Gnome-Mplayer combo.

5.4.3 live CD started up ok on a old Dell Dimension 8200 that would hang
during startup using previous versions.

broomdodger.
I see exatcly the same mplayer output in my Upup Precise, but the video plays. So I cant find exactly useful debug info though there are several error messages. I have them also but the video still plays.
There seem to be some version mismatches from some reason.

It can be graphics card problem also.

pemasu & rerwin:
Unexpected release by BK of 5.4.3 has introduced some additional considerations about the (still) non-functioning rt2800usb. Flying blind, this is what I have done/am doing:
I deleted the previous (retro)Precise and loaded a FULL of 5.4.3 . This was not uneventful; FULL may broken or something residing on my machine that wasn't fully deleted may be broken. FULL doesn't start up properly, loadsa messages, prompt instead of opening screen, but, by various subterfuges, I can get it up & running. I will work on the install aspect as far as I am able and report again, here, about this.
In the meantime, I attempted to connect with the rt2800usb dongle using both SNS & Dougal's utilities. At this stage, that is all - they both failed as before. I attach the pmodemdiag file as previously requested.
I will now go away and run the patches, one at a time, kindly provided by you guys and report back.

I ran the pemasu file rt2800usb-preference-fix and tried again to connect without success. The pmodemdiag file is attached.

Then I ran the rerwin pdiag-20121216 file and floundering without exact recipe of what to do next except run 'depmod'. A few more instructions would be welcome, but, since it's only 5am in Maine, will clean the system down with cfdisk and re-install everything, hoping the FULL install will also benfit from cleansing.

Sorry guys, have to suspend modem testing. There is something seriously wrong with FULL for 5.3.4 that wasn't there before. Have flagged it on BK's blog and will have to leave it there for the moment - too many other commitments to catch up on.

rt2800usb

#199 Post by sszindian »

Sage:

I too am using rt2800usb and a Linksys plugin, and have had nothing but headaches and grief with it.

I could not get wifi to connect using the 'setup' icon (desktop) to go to the function, or the 'connect' icon (desktop) to go to the setup function! Using NSS (I believe Dougal's or something like that)they would in fact allow me to configure the wifi but could not 'find' the wifi afterwards.

To my surprize, I tried clicking on the 'Tray Internet Icon' to go to the setup function, and it worked after the second setup try... have no idea why this is but it worked the same for me also in Dpup-Precise and also Exprimo.

Worth a try no?

Many thanks, ssz.
After lunch I discovered that the (still) defective FULL had actually booted up. I looked in the modules list and now, in 5.4.3 FULL, none is loaded by default. rt2800usb has been completely removed from the list, so I loaded the two on offer, rt2500/73usb and rebooted. One of the curious features of this installation is that 'depmod' in console reports 'Bus Error'. Never seen it before, no idea what it's all about, but noticed that the booting process pauses for a very long time >5mins at depmod. Blackscreening seems to have stopped now at third boot attempt (I read of other folks' experiences with this curious symptom). Tried to load 2500 or 73 with nil effect. Pointless running pmodemdiag, presumably? Nothing there to 'diag' !
Will await BK's magic touch to put Precise back in working order.
Till then adieu - at least on this thread. Probably.
Maybe not, though.
Not wishing to be defeated, in desperation, loaded the entirely inappropriate PAE version on this old all-Intel 2.66G(32-bit)/512M machine and BINGO - everything wireless is working. All the issues reported above refer to the (recommended!) retro version, which has been more useful in my testing regimens so far as I can muster kit from a K6-II/Athlon750 in small increments to a 939 and occasional loan of completely unnecessary, but widespread, multiple core machines. Wierd indeed, especially as the retro version is ~30% larger, presumably to accommodate a bigger range of ancient HW?
For completeness, I took the precaution of loading pemasu rt...fix and rerwin's pdiag. Could prove useful when moving this HD around on a caddy.
Thanks for your forebearance, folks. Look forward to BK repairing the retro version for future deployment.
