I installed puppy on usb memory and I was keeping there very important documents. On one of my machines with windows I had very important documents (one of a kind).

I tried to move them on pup flash and it was ok, but at the end a message appeared and said that I should reboot the machine because the OS is running with 0 of ram. So I rebooted and .. no files on windows neither on puppy..

And I don't know what to do . I just purchased remo recovery on windows but it can't help me.

Any suggestions?! Thanks in advance!

My condolences.

I know very little about recuperation of files on a usb drive.

Had it been a regular hard drive in vfat or ntfs format, you may have had a chance of retrieving your one-of-a-kind file. On the other hand, unfortunately, Linux drive formats such as ext3 are notorious for having little to none recuperation score. You see, in Linux, we try to make a back-up before we do any change on a drive...

Perhaps try a bit-level reader, or a sector or disk editor (even in FreeDOS if necessary), to dump the remaining contents of your usb drive on a hard drive and then dig in that dumped file with a text search utility to find your file or at least your text. I never had a problem with my usb drives, so my suggestion is only tentative.

May be here is not the place to ask, but if someone faced that kind of problem, is there any suitable software for windows to backup existing folder. Not to recover , because it is not deleted - as I mentioned files are lost in a process of movement.

If not I guess I should find new job.

do you mean, you move those files into puppy root directory ?

does it is not being saved at shutdown ?

if it is saved, then the files is in the savefiles.

if not, maybe you can undelete the moved files? i never try them btw...

Have you tried to examine the flash drive with Menu -> System -> Gparted?

There is a Data rescue function in it (in the drop-down menu under Device.)

Just a thought.

Sorry to hear it, I learned the hard way. Always copy files verify the copy then delete the source files if desired. Never move files.
