report-video 2.7 gettext version

#1 Post by don570 »

This is a replacement for Barry Kauler's report-video.
It can be launched from the 'System' menu or type
'video-report' in terminal.

Details about your computer are written to two files in /tmp

I have begun to use gettext to localise applications.

The older version used Zigbert's method to localize.

I provide French ,German and the beginnings of a Spanish translation.

There is a quiet option that generates a full report in /tmp folder.

Actually the app generates two reports in /tmp(see image) .
The compressed folder contains three files.

1)report-video (long version)
2)Xorg errors
3)xorg.conf

Tazoc has promised to re-write sys-info so that it
doesn't over-write the report-video application when it is installed.

don570,
What you have done is nice, but it is not just "report-video" as is my original script, it is more of a complete system report.

Actually, my original intention was that I would write a series of single-purpose scripts, for example 'report-video', 'report-network', 'reporting-audio', etc.

Anyway, as your script is not really just "report-video", perhaps it should be named something else, ditto the PET, for example "report-system".

New version 2.7

I added several new reports, taking code out of sys-info
1) SFS installed
2) pet packages installed
3) Kernel line

It is now very similar to Tazoc's sys-info but
much faster. It was checked on Carlolina and Precise and Slacko

The first time report-video is launched it will be a little bit slow
(because of bug in lsusb -v causes mouse to freeze)
but subsequent launches will be very fast!!

Thanks to vicmz for Spanish translation . I'll put it inside the package
in version 1.8 in a couple of days.

I can change the name easy enough, so I'll use report-system

Hi, don.

I hope you are well. (We should go have a coffee sometime to discuss our favorite canine distro, :) since we live only a few miles apart!)

A quick one: if report-video is not an error, why is it logged also in /tmp/xerrs.log? (in Wheezy 3.5.2.5)

xerrs.log scraps up enough non-errors already, IMO, e.g.
  • non-compliance to new gtk standard of older gtk-2 themes,
or it's never satisfied with the syntax of the kill command.
Is there a way to make report-video be happy with logging in its own /tmp/report-video file only?

Thanks in advance.

This is a dead project. Barry Kauler advised me to rename to
report system.

I find report-system valuable to find what sfs files that are loaded.

I'll test again and see what is happening in wheezy.

Thanks for your answer, don, and for the link.

What's creating the slag in WheezyPup's xerrs.log, then: your "report-system" or Barry's "report-video"?

When I checked the latest Wheezy 3.5.2 -7 Pemasu has installed my app
'report-system' It can be launched at the start menu (see image)
or a console command.

I didn't notice any strange messages.

...and Barry would never have written report-video with strange messages.
So you will have to continue to try to track down the cause.
