hi all,

I am quite the noob

I have no sound, the little sound icon is there in the bottom right, but no sound.

I have also used Mandrake, Mepis and Ubuntu and all had sound straight away (with other problems)

I don't know if its relevant but win98 worked pretty good, fast and relatively reliable (until someone ate my MBR over the internet) and winXP didn't really work at all, however sound etc worked fine.

my computer is:
P2 400 256meg
nVidia 64meg something-or-other
sound - yamaha DSXG

can anyone point me in the right direction?

also - can I open a non-root terminal?

also - is there a way to change refresh rate yet? Gettin a headache here...

I just got around to doing this and that has switched on the sound. Now I have discovered I have a problem with video, but I will post in a new thread for that.

I can get Puppy to automatically detect your sound card.

Can you go the the menu:
Start -> Control panel -> Hardware probe

then click on the "Query-PCI" button, then you may have to wait awhile, it can be slow. In the next window, find the info about the sound chip, and get the chip numbers.
For example on my PC the numbers are 1039:0900.

here is a screenshot of the hardware probe results, I don't really know what bit you need to know - sound was fine after the ymfpci command, you do of course realise that my soundcard is really old, it might not be worth the effort to get puppy to detect it, since it is so easy to activate it after booting up.

and BTW - very nice OS, my daughter will never need to learn windows (although at only 22mths she is still a bit too little to do much more than watch the wiggles on her computer!), and my hubby is slowly warming up to linux too Very Happy
