TLCpngo12 - "Top Left Corner" pupngo 2012 project

#1 Post by greengeek »

This project is based upon goingnuts' "pUPnGO2012" which I thought would be a good lightweight base.

What's the project?
Some of my older machines either won't boot puppy or don't display Puppy desktops properly so I thought I could use pUPnGO as a test bed to try and work out what is going wrong, and then once I've sorted out the problems I could add extra functionality and breathe some useful life back into the old machines.

I had a gut feeling that it might be rox and/ or display resolution issues are what is stopping some of my machines from booting properly, and that solving the display resolution/configuration issues might help me get them to run ok. Sure enough, when I got rid of the "bottom_of_screen" menu and drive icons I was able to boot my Toshiba 2180cdt laptop successfully. I hope this will also be of benefit on some other machines too.

What is "TLCpngo12"?
"TLC" refers to "Top Left Corner" - I want to have all desktop display functions referenced to the top left corner, instead of having an "artificial" menu tray and drive icons "tacked on" at the bottom of the screen. Why? Because the video hardware sees the top left corner as the "starting point" where x=0 and y=0. If you have a menu tray and drive icon tray attached to the bottom of the screen the window manager has to position the tray differently depending on the screen resolution of your machine. Making these programmatic display calculations can cause problems on some machines.

By referencing everything to the top left corner, it doesn't matter how wide, or how high the screen is, the menu (and drive icons!) will stay at top left (starting from x=0, y=0). My aim is that I want to end up with a lightweight puppy that does not care if the screen is 320x240, 600x480, 800x600 or whatever.

The basic TLCpngo12 iso is here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/vs7quwi84 ... _Basic.iso
(xvesa only)

and here is the same functionality but using a newer base iso from goingnuts. He refers to that iso as his 3rd upload (pupngo_v412_060113), and it is the one that allows an encrypted savefile if needed (as mentioned by jan99 on p12 of goingnuts pupngo2012 thread).
http://www.mediafire.com/file/b9hn4uhbu ... 3Basic.iso
(xvesa only)
(uploaded new version to overcome problem with "menu, system, filemanager" previously not working)

Other more complete versions as follows:

TLCpngo12_003+sns here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/xlq43p2xy ... 03+sns.iso
(xvesa only)
(uploaded new version to overcome problem with "menu, system, filemanager" previously not working)

TLCpngo12_003+sns+xorg here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/1pc7qi7tn ... s+xorg.iso
(uploaded new version to overcome problem with "menu, system, filemanager" previously not working)
(for tips how to start xorg on this pup please see here:http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 50&start=2

(I will soon be trialling another version of xorg that goingnuts has put together and will add it later)

TLCpngo12_003+sns+xorg+freeoffice here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/nq6gc19ud ... office.iso
Note: in order to use freeoffice it is necessary to start xorg, and also necessary to enter your registration code from Softmaker.
Freeoffice Textmaker does the following:
-writes to rtf, doc or pdf etc as needed, and also reads docx. Very quick and capable. (saving as docx requires a paid version of Textmaker 2012, but freeoffice can READ docx then allows you to modify it and save as doc/pdf etc)
Freeoffice Planmaker handles xls etc
Freeoffice Presentations handles powerpoint etc
(further notes back here if needed:http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=83550)

All the future versions of TLCpngo12 will also be based on goingnuts "3rd upload" of pupngo2012 (currently the latest - even if you don't use a crypto savefile function there seem to have been no negative comments about that iso so I will stick with it)
.

Thanks Ally! Actually, I think the clever stuff was how the devs got the menu and drive icons to be at the bottom of the screen in the first place, but anyway, it seems more simple to have it all at top left (even though it initially seems weird to have the menu up there). My hardware seems to like it so thats what I'm aiming for...

Have now added a similar basic version, but using the newer version of pupngo iso that goingnuts released to allow a crypto savefile in case someone needs it. Otherwise the same thing.
