I just got online with Precise 5.4.2, and only visited packages.ubuntu.com, to see if a particular package was available, and what dependencies needed.
I then checked in PPM to see what it had to say about the same package.
Then a Puppy-looking popup appeared saying an important update is available for 5.4.2..
Is this legit?

Since when has Puppy phoned home?
Very bad form if so.

Not happy.

It was a popup to allow you to install the .pet package which would upgrade you from 5.4.2 to 5.4.3 and yes it was legit.

Did the popup say: Service Pack available...at the first row.

All very nice, but it would be good if this sort of behaviour had been notified to Puppy users beforehand.
Has this been announced anywhere?

There should at least be an option somewhere to turn off notifications.

hi WindUpToy,

precise puppy does have an update check when you open the PPM, and only when you open the PPM. The updates are bugfixes and improvements, and are really small, i believe they also tell you what they fix.

It seems to me a good way to fix small problems that weren't discovered until after release., not everyone would know about them if they were just posted on the forum

And those Service Packs in fact fix quite severe bugs found. I encourage you to install it.

Yes, nothing wrong with the concept, but there was nothing wrong with that concept when MS first started doing it either, and look how that has been abused.

PPM should give an option to turn off notifications.

You should post to the Barrys Blog your suggestions and improvement statements. Barry listens and if he finds the suggestions useful, he will improve the behavior.
