The PLDP

#1 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello,
OK, here is how I see it...
We have tons of information about Puppy, its development, usage, creation etc, all over the place.. I know nothing about Wiki, so Ive got a bit of learning to do there, but I have done a few things to act as resources outside of the Murga Forum...

Firstly, a website..
http://www.theplpd.webs.com
A place for active members to share links, info, etc..

Second, a separate EMail account..
theplpd@gmail.com
(also in my signature..)
To send documentation to..

Third, well first timewise, a Facebook Group
https://www.facebook.com/groups/105376249522117?ap=1
To be social....

I hope to create a generic Puppy Linux Users Manual..
Not specific to any one version, just relevant info on Installing and Using Puppy in general...

There are many great tutorials on/linked to this Forum...
I would also like to create a text file, readable in Windows, explaining how to install and use Puppy, and include it in the base ISO, so new users can print it out, "Read up, then re-boot"

In my experience, Audio, Video, and Networking seem to generate the most questions OOTB, so I am looking to gather up the best info I can in these areas first...
I have a pretty good start on D/Ling, burning, and setting the BIOS to boot from, a CD/DVD...

I know that this has all been done before, it just needs a little arranging...
When I was working on the Puppy 4 "Dingo" Manual, I realized that Puppy grows to fast for a specific manual..
But an overall, generic manual, could be compressed, and included in the base ISO.. Several are doing this already... I hope they join me here...

I openly welcome suggestions, criticism, points of view...
But keep it civil, this group does have a moderator...

Wiki is easy to learn and a good way to work collaboratively. Editing a page is no harder than making a post on this forum.

Wiki's have internal and external links, on Wikka

internal link is created by
[[PageName]]

External Links are
[[http://www.pagename.com]]

on both type the text for the link goes after

[[PageName page name]]

External Links are
[[http://www.pagename.com page name]]

check c2.com for more wiki philosophy

Great stuff, Jay

Excellent opening page, very focused and clear :D

I think your PUG thread showed the benefits of the benevolent dictator approach which was pioneered by Barry K, but I hope this won't fizzle out after so many good ideas came out of it!

Darkcity, wiki admin, has just suggested a documentation team, as there are a few hiccups with wiki structure, as with the PLUG forum process, and some key decisions need making, to move forward, else we're just tinkering with the edges, like dipping a toe in water, when we could be having fun swimming and splashing each other

It seems much of the data is locked up in forum, external, and/or wiki databases, and we don't seem to be making best use of either/any, so my feeling is for someone who has database knowledge, to pm me, or, if acceptable, to post here, with ideas of how we can filter that valuable resource, and make better use of it. I have some research

John M has shown provisional interest in the database idea - it just needs flesh on the bones

Documentation/Info is just data, guys

PLDP will need to help sort it, either the hard way, with lots of people/man-hours, or the smart way, with tools for the job

What do you think?

Edited typo only

Aitch :)

A good place to check on the wiki is the recent changes page-

This makes it easy to see what is being worked on :o

So Puppy now has a Police Dept.?
What's the ugliest part of your body?

Some say your toes
But I think it's your mind

It could just as easily be thought of as Puppy Linux Data Protection

Great idea puppyluvr! I'm not the most talented puppy user around, but I went ahead and joined, and I'll contribute what I can. Besides, we're practically neighbors, so I couldn't resist being the first to jump in with you on this.
I carefully plan ALL my random acts!

It was easy to slip a Puppy collection into this project that was just started "last Thursday".* One more place to "shelf" info stuff about Puppy is off to a good start.

A suggestion or two...

#12 Post by mamoon001 »

First, remember that it takes a shepherd to lead the flock. The flock does the rest.
Second, and a bit more from observation / experience is that the documentation and road map needs to be laid out first, then the code writing, then revisions to the documentation. The documentation then becomes the constant reminder of the goal at hand as well as the user manual. The trip goes better with some planning first...

Hmm... this is interesting...

I find it to be like Puppy stuff is like spread a bit around and its sometimes hard to find the things you look for even here in the forum.

So as this goes and grows i will hang around to snatch goodies for the Schoolux CD under the Puppy Linux educational section...

Great initiative

Atle

If you want to create a archive repo for older puplets... send me a PM. I've got plenty of server space, I've been looking for Grays BoxPup 4.12 if you happen to have it.

Isnt part of the problem that everyone goes and makes their own site. Not trying to talk down on you're efforts... but woudlnt the community be better served by everyone pooling their efforts on the wiki? If you're worried about the wiki going down and then being lost... why not have your site being a backup of the wiki?

I just think sometimes, in our want to do something for puppy... we end up duplicating our efforts. And I think as a whole community, we have lost alot of time redoubling efforts over and over.
