Hello sc0ttman Very Happy
Are you using a Woof build of your own, or the latest Woof2?
I need to know this because if it's the first, Akita would need its own langpack made from scratch, but if it's the second, the current langpacks can be used in Akita.

the shortest answer: It needs a new lang pack... Where you find the latest versions of a puppy app in akita, it is localized in the usual way.. half of each langpack will work..

I updated many apps as puppy did, and so have various programs that are 'up to date' in terms of their localization in puppy - programs such as FFConvert, Grub4dosConfig, etc .. Others are customised in akita..

It's a pre woof, pup4 build, now using wary 51x glibc etc, so utf-8 is working. I manually added many translations, with help from some great guys on this forum, many of these are not gettext'd, see in /usr/share/locale/*/.. and you'll see *.locale files - just text files ... The files that have matching *.locale files in /usr/share/locale/ are probably unique to akita, or heavily customised in akita ..

Akita does have an older version of momanager, and some of the required stuff, (I think it works, ) .. but Akita still uses Shinobars old Puppy-Desktop-NLS package to translate parts of the desktop..

Extra info, not important:

Akita if not a woof build, its pre woof.. It was TurboPup (a 4.2 puplet), and long story short, it's now the same old pre-woof, k2.6.25.16 puppy, but I updated everything in it, mostly using the contents of Wary 51x ... The devx is from Wary 514 or something..

Downloaded Akita 14 and ran it from disk. Every thing seems to work okay my old P3-1.4 Tualatin on an Asus Tuv4x mobo. I was running Akita 11 on it. I've seem to have lost the sound on both distro's on it. I ran Wary 5.3 off of disk and the sound system works. I opened Retrovol and checked the volume levels. The VLC front end disappears right after you hit the play button. Opened up the process manager and it says VLC is still running. Any hints?

First... Try setting the Video out to X11 instead of Xvideo (or vice vera, cant remember)... Although if the video out is not supported by ur Xorg module (vesa) then VLC-GTK will do that automatically anyway... But worth a try ...

As for the sound, nothing has changed except the multiple sound card wizard has been updated in v14... Maybe try running it and see if it helps fix/break your sound issues...

Do you get sound in Mocp or other apps?

EDIT: You might also make /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa non executable, and see how that goes... The only other thing in Akita that might differ from other older pups, is in /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown, search '#20120408' and comment out the alsa-ctl/alsa-restore stuff...

Or .. dumb suggestion, but might help, maybe try ticking all the boxes in retrovol - aside from the master and PCM, the 'Front' box also needs to be ticked on one of my PCs, but not on the others.. different pups name things differently in retrovol..

Maybe try the mplayer in the akita repo... VLC has always worked better for me, but might not be the case for you..

Just type `pkg -g mplayer` in the terminal and mplayer_gui will be downloaded and installed for you...

I did a search of this string and could not find that anyone else has this strange problem which I experience with B11, B13, B14. The problem is a flashing "refresh desktop" notification about every 7 seconds. I only see this problem on Akita betas.

Background: All beta have been ran in the same hardware. I have at least a dozen other Puppies including the original 420 Xtreme. a 216CE and several 5 series pups that load and run fine. All your betas have been ran from 2fs formatted USB flash-drives using grub4dos and just the five basic files; initrd.gz, vmlinux, pup_420.sfs, zdrv_420.sfs. and a save file. B11 sits on it's own partition (four other partitions on that 4-GB flash). B13 andB14 sit on a flash with a 16-GB shared partition with several other puppies.

Thanks .... hope you have some idea of a solution. KJ

How odd... I have a few guesses:

EDIT: try commenting out line 679 and 696 of /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d ... to disable the update_jwm_drives func... that *might* be it..

1. Maybe try stopping the script '~/Startup/gtk-mnt-links' .. There are various ways: Hit Ctrl+F5 to load htop task manager, and kill it... Or.. Go to Menu->System->Schedule->Startups, and untick gtk-mnt-links, then restart X..

2. If not fixed by above, maybe it's /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d - load up the 'Event Manager', or 'Startups' (see above), and disable all the hotplugging and udev stuff, and restart X..

3. Still not fixed.. Run 'Menu->Setup->Toggle ROX Desktop', and try the various settings... Note: as of Akita13 (I think), you can totally disable desktop drive icons.. That might work for you...

4. Lastly, if still not fixed... Make the following files non exec, see if the errors still occur: /usr/sbin/blkid, /usr/sbin/blkid-name-generator, /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d, ~/Startup/gtk-mnt-links , /usr/sbin/create_jwmrc_drives.sh...

Is it correct that Akita Beta 12 does not have this problem? You didn't list it.. If so, replace the files listed in (4) with those from beta12...

Having never heard of such a problem, I can't say exactly what the cause will be, my guess is something to do with hotplugging (pup_event_frontend), blkid, or gtk-mnt-links ... Obviously, if I can identify the problem properly, I'll have a go at fixing it...

Thanks for the quick response. Sc0ttman ... I owe an apology. The 7 second period flashing message actually reads "update drive icons" .... perhaps this is normal behavior for later Akitas. I do not remember if I saw this with earlier betas but saw it in B11 along with large cpu usage spikes and moved on to other pups. Came back when I saw the B14 upgrade and thought I give it another try. Saw "problem" and checked out B13, then found the old install of B11 .... just installed B12 .... same "problem". Will take a look at your other suggestions, 'tho I think your responses may not apply as I gave you "bad info" to work from. Sorry .... Thanks again for your help. KJ

EDIT: problem relates to desktop drive "hotplug". Turned off desktop drive hotplug in event manager and problem disappears .... of course, so does drive status indicator. Thanks .... you put me on the right track even with "bad input info". KJ

just tried to install akita beta 14 to hard disk and faced a couple of problems:

- various errors after installing grub (but the next boot worked as expected)

- mouse not recognized after boot from hdd (weird 'cause it was working while testing the live cd

- looks like i can't install all the browsers: tried to install Firedog 3.6 but i didn't get it...after starting the install, every window disappears.

have you got any suggestions? hope my test will be somehow useful Smile

hello slimhunter welcome to puppy !

I am no expert but i will gladly try and help !
first i have to ask
1 what kind of a pc are we dealing with ?
2 did you check the md5 sum of your download ?
3 did you try any other type of install like boot live cd and simply
create a save file ?
4 can you tell me what video driver is being loaded when you run xorgwizard ?
and make sure that you dont use ext4 partition for the save file as
akita doesnt like ext4 !
please be patient as i am sure we will get past this small problem
as i am sure you will love akita !
I will be watching this as much as possible however pesty things like work get in the way !
And i must say that some of the most brilliant people i have
ever seen are in these forums and will be more than happy to help!
" That is what makes puppy so great the people ! "

Thanks for trying akita...

Use the following in ther terminal to download firedog to /root :
Code:
cd /root; wget http://ppm.scottjarvis.com/internet/browsers/firedog/firedog-3.6.pet
I just did it, its working for me ..

What did you use to install Akita? The Frugal Installer? The Universal Installer? (The frugal installer is recommended...)

Are you using a usb mouse or not? I have tested with every mouse I have (usb and ps/2) and they all worked...

Type this into a terminal, see what you get:

Code:
puppyinputdetect -meu

Thanks to both you two for your enthusiasm and support, I solved the installation problem ...i wiped again the whole hard disk, made again the partitions (ext + swap) and the installation progress worked like a charm Smile Weird but this also solved the mouse problem, i don't know why Shocked

Just FYI, I've installed Akita on a P3 800mhz (coppermine) with 384mb ram and 6.5GB HDD. It's perfect now!

Now for the browser: on this fresh install, I've tried again to install the browser i liked the most - Firedog 3.6 - but still the "browser installer" didn't install it.

Then i tried your method: it downloaded the pet and installed it, but the ppm told me once again that "HOWEVER, these dependencies are missing" (follows a list).

I cheched in the Internet\WWW menu and in fact there was no Firefox\Firedog entry...but indeed it was installed! in fact, when i clicked on the "browse" icon on the desktop, firedog came up. why there's no icon? why i got those dependencies errors?

I'll keep on testing akita by these days, so if i find something weird i'll report it both for getting help and giving you a continuous feedback.

oh, i'd also like to help you in fully translating puppy akita in italian, just tell me how i can be useful Wink

last thing: excuse me for all the mess i'm putting up, i've been using puppy just for a short time and only with legacy os, i still have to understand puppy in a deeper way Very Happy

partsman, thanks for all the support and kind words, much appreciated - hope your custom akita is holding up alright... I've yet to get time to test it, but am still definitely gonna do so at some point!

I will double check the browser installer... it'll be fixed in the next Akita.

the missing dependencies can usually be ignored with firefox 3.6 packages... Firedog/FF 3.6 reports missing libs, but it'll be fine...

After installing a local pet file, (a .pet that you've downloaded), you may need to run 'Refresh Desktop', ... you should then see the menu entries for firedog..

Look in /usr/share/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES/, and look for the *.locale files --> these are just normal text files, you can open them in a text editor, translate to italian, and save the file, with the SAME NAME, in /usr/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/

The *.mo files (they are created using 'gettext' and 'poedit') are more complicated... the .mo files will need you to load the devx and install poedit, only then can you open the .mo files ... There are guides on this forum about how to do this...

- the devx can be downloaded here: http://akita.scottjarvis.com/akita_devx-b11.sfs,
- poedit here: http://akita.scottjarvis.com/poedit-1.4.2-3-i686.pet

( to install SFS files, right-click on them in the file manager, and choose 'SFS Loader' )

From the main Akita post:
Quote:
Translations: gettext/poedit method
- Poediter for Akita: Download
- Install poediter, type 'poeditor' in the terminal to run it
- then look in /usr/share/doc/nls/*/, for the .po files
- these files contain the base translations, from which others are made
- the final result will be a .mo file, that can be placed in /usr/share/locales/*/LC_MESSAGES

More tips about translating .mo/.po/.pot files:
