Any one know of any (preferably lightweight) linux applications that can import an audio file and make a matching audio meter video file from it - squiggly lines, jumping bars etc to represent the audio playing?

Something like this in gnome-mplayer but as a video.

cheers.

if no one knows of anything, you could always do a screen capture.

the catchphrase is "real-time spectrogram".

www.google.com/search?q=linux+"real-time+spectrogram"

You may still have to use a screen recorder ... https://www.google.com/cse?cx=015995643981050743583%3Aabvzbibgzxo&q=desktop+recorder&sa=Search&cof=FORID%3A0#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=desktop%20recorder

Audacious audio player has a spectrogram in window,
but I don't know if it's accurate??

...but a screen video of it might be useful to someone.

This looks like it fits the bill ... http://tlecomte.github.com/friture/

screengrab ... http://tlecomte.github.com/friture/images/friture_20100713.png

it requires python, and I don't have a scooby how to make it work in Puppy.
