Internet periodically drops out in Slacko and Precise

#1 Post by JamesTheAwesomeDude »

Okay, back when I used Lucid, my wireless was very, very stable (unlike Ubuntu, which was very crashy.) The difference was, one used ar9170usb, the other one used carl9170usb. Now, I don't mean to be rude, but whoever "carl" is should STOP MAKING DRIVERS. He is NOT GOOD AT IT.
After upgrading to Puppy 5.4, every few minutes, the internet dies. (Problem occurs on both Slacko and Precise.) When downloading a torrent with lots of peers, the internet literally dies every 90 seconds. This is a heavy annoyance, increased by the fact that I need to retype my static local IP every time I reconnect (which is often.)

I've given up all hope of troubleshooting carl9170usb; I just need the ar9170usb driver. I always, always, ALWAYS have horrific luck at compiling stuff, so I'll need someone to compile it for me, if they'd be willing. I'm running Slacko Puppy 5.4, with kernel release 3.2.33-4g (I think.)

Anyway, this is critical, so I would really, REALLY appreciate it if someone could pull this off.
Will provide any other requested system specs.

Okay, here it is.

Also, who edited my message? That was rather unnecessary...

usbcore: registered new interface driver carl9170
usb 1-5: driver API: 1.9.4 2011-08-15 [1-1]
usb 1-5: firmware API: 1.9.4 2011-06-30
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drive ... Firmware-1

You could try if firmware update to the version 1.9.7 helps. The carl9170 firmware is compiled binary and it has a lot options when you compile it. It would need more knowledge than I have atm to try to compile it in Puppy. So...ready made firmware binary is the way to the how this one behaves.
Reboot after installing the pet....or manually in console:
modprobe -r carl9170
modprobe carl9170

By the way...carl9170 does not support n group speed well. You might try also dropping the support to only a/b/g group in your wlan router. It might help.

Okay, updated carl9170. Will see if it helps.

I still much prefer ar9170, though, and have no idea why it was deprecated. It's infinitely (imo) superior to carl9170, if only for the reason that it's stable.

If anyone manages to get ar9170 compiled for a 3.x Linux kernel (3.2.3-4g i686, to be precise,) I would be extremely grateful.

After updating, it goes around 10X longer without crashing.

I still really miss ar9170, though. It worked 100% flawlessly, so if anyone manages to get it compiled for 3.x kernel, please, please, please post it here! I hate carl9170!
