5.4.3 Flash and Firefox and using 528 pets

#1 Post by Ed Howdershelt »

I'm not a fan of Seamonkey.
It'll do, I suppose, but I'm used to Firefox. Know where to look for everything and like that.
So I ran package manager and clicked the Firefox 19 listed.
It installed the 'Nightly' version of Firefox. I didn't like it. No particular reasons other than wanting a regular Firefox with controllable updates.
So I deleted Nightly and reached into my 528 partition for my FF19.pet.
It installed and runs fine. Updates fine.

Next I discovered an older v.10x Flash came with 543.
Deleted the existing Flash stuff and used my v.11x Flash pet from 528, then replaced the libflashplayer.so with the latest available for Linux.
Works fine, apparently. Flash test showed the right number.

Are there any warnings about using 528 pets with 543?
Thanks,
Ed

Hello Ed, it's kind of about backwards compatibility.

In an effort to keep my response simple, the different Pup's allow for a lot of mix and match, granted dynamic shared libraries aren't too many builds apart. 528 and 543 both being built of the Ubuntu mold, pkgs are somewhat compatible. As a 528 user I almost always stick to 10.04 versioning pkgs, except for items like browsers or programs where current builds carry extended functionality. Aboard 543, I'll grab something from an earlier build should the current version not provide what I'm looking for.

Oh, and no.. no warnings. Occasionally a pkg won't run, but the commandline's quick to tell you so.

I was happy with 528 until it started doing odd things.
Left it in place when I installed 543 and it's still on the boot menu.

With 528 I was happy, but...
All last year, Menu>Poweroff would get me a reboot. Didn't care, since I could safely turn off the box when it hit the MBR boot menu.

Last week, Menu>Poweroff began giving me a reboot that bypassed the boot menu and went straight back to 528, but without wifi. I'd have to set up wifi again to use it.
Tried reinstalling 528 and Poweroff worked fine once. Next time it was back to bypassing the boot menu and restarting without wifi.

Since I hadn't changed any hardware settings and don't know much about editing Linux commands, I tried 543. It worked, so I adapted it and adapted to it.

If there's a fix for the Poweroff problem in 528, I'd go back to using it.

Also: I liked Nathan's wallpaper setter. It isn't in 543. Miss it.
And 543 crops the pic I like as wallpaper. 528 didn't do that. Tried changing height/width and it still cropped it. Boo that.

Saw that before. Maybe read it too quickly. Thought the pets were just wallpapers, not programs.
Got them. I'll try one in a bit.
Thanks,
Ed

Pass on that.
Got a pic I like that wallpapered fine in 528.
Nathan's didn't fix the problem, still crops it top and bottom.
Also crashed 543, but the cropped pic was there when it rebooted.

Got a fix for the Poweroff/reboot problem in 528?
Thanks

Might not be what you signed on for, but you seem to have some talent for finding stuff.
Thanks

No luck. Grabbed the exit and shutdown pets and put them in a folder under 543.
Booted 528 and separately installed, tested, and uninstalled each of the 4 pets I found. (Didn't have two different fixit installs working at the same time.)

None of them fixed the boot/shutdown problem.
I am, however, getting proficient at pressing the 'off' button at what seems to be the right moment in the shutdown cycle.
528 will reboot fully functional, ie; with wifi working.

So... now I'll completely reformat the 2nd physical hard drive and do a clean install from the CD.

It occurred to me that although I've made no hardware changes, sometimes they occur on their own, as when something like RAM is trying to fail. This is a 10 year old machine, so it's possible.
I'll just keep messing with it. It's become a puzzle.

If frugal, you should try: puppy acpi=off or puppy acpi=ht. If hd installed, as boot options in your menu.lst.

Nope. Not frugal. Full install.

I deleted all partitions, formatted the drive, reinstalled 528 from the CD.
No change; still has the shutdown/boot problem.

Unless a fix happens along, I'll go with 543.

Still no idea why it worked fine for a year, then started doing this.
Thanks,
Ed

That's OK, you're not the only one reading this. I'd also lay off the quotes- you're not geared for'em.

Now.. does it shutdown OK after a live boot? No? Try a boot code..

If you think you're up to it, you could try troubleshooting with the *real* syslogd.

If you didn't bother with any of those boot codes..

You'll probably wanna stick with Precise.

*Late question: You have this version?

If this doesn't tell you: cat /etc/DISTRO_SPECS | grep -i distro_version

You're looking for an applied IU here: ls -l ~/.packages | grep -i instant*

By now though I'm sure you've  burned the iso..
