touchpad frozen first three boots, battery life worst

#4 Post by Ted Dog »

Biggest issue is my laptop is becoming a toaster and a 10hr rated battery (when new :? ) only lasts 30 mins on this version. Please review the overheating posts on the forum.
However the wallpaper and default settings are good. I will check if the shutdown corruption bug reappears like RC

OK shutdown corruption bug has not occurred,

And the kill X keys Ctrl-Alt-Backspace drops to commandline, without automagically restarting X works again

So I can reboot without corrupting savefile, when the touchpad is frozen at boot which is 75% of the time.

Due to the overheating even with 'governers on', and unfixed frozen mouse issue, I'll have to pass on this version. :x

I can't get sound with any release of Precise. I also tried Saluki and Racy, but sound is not supported. There's no technical problem with the computer, since sound works under Linux Mint..

I tried the Muliple Card setup, but that didn't solve anything. The sound tray icon gives 65295% btw and the soundbar can't be lowered . (No sound, though)

-Card 0 : Generic (HD-audio-generic), device 3 :HDMI 0 ( HDMI 0)
-Card 1 : Generic_1 (HD-audio-generic), device 0 : ALC662 rev3 Analog)
-Card 1 : Generic_1 (HD-audio-generic), device a1: ALC662 rev3 Digital)

I have a AMD E2-1800 based computer with Radeon HD 7340 graphics

The Alsa Mixer Gui shows:2 seperate entries:
1) Card HD Audio Generic.
-I can adjust PCM of that entry
-IE958 (can't adjust anything there)

2) CHIP: ATI R6xx HDMi: nothing graphical I can adjust underneath this.

When I run Alsawizard, I see this:
hda-intel : AMD Hudson Azalia controller (rev 01)
legacy (when I ty this option, I see : no modules found)
usb audio
aoa

Linux mint lists the following info :
PCi devices: Audio device: AMD nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio (Radeon HD 6250/6310)
Kernel Modules :
-snd_hda_codec_realtek
-snd_hda_codec_hdmi
-snd_hda_intel
-snd_hda_codec
-snd_hwdep
-snd_pcm
-kvm_amd
-snd_seq_midi
-kvm
-snd_rawmidi
-snd_seq_midi_event

After installing the Gimp and some Pets like Firefox and Mozilla, I now also see missing dependencies btw. These can't be located in the repo's.

Exceptionally long boot-up time >2mins. Otherwise, agree with James (my XP2800clockedXP3000) - everything works sound, video, connection, Flash OOTB - oh yes, and Opera (from DEB-Other)! Would be nice to have a better selection of wallpapers, like Slacko, eg bring back guy-on-a-bike, NASA Earth-rise, maybe some of the excellent ones used by James/Bill?

Billtoo: what sort of boot times are you getting on single core machines? or, indeed, multiple cores ones? Notice any significant increase from earlier releases?

Do I understand correctly that there is no more "Retro" Precise Puppy? That is those of us on non PAE hardware have just been dropped? Well told that there might be a release sometime by somebody (no offence but not an"Official" release) that might be a Precise based Puppy based on 5.5 with non-PAE kernel? But even that might not happen?

I've been using Lupu for the last 2 years on this 2005 1.4Ghz Pentium M laptop (no PAE). A couple of months ago I looked at what was available as I wanted to update and picked Retro Precise 5.4.3 (which Barry had just announced ( http://bkhome.org/blog2/?viewDetailed=00070 )with expected future updates. Nothing in the release notes ( http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/precis ... README.htm ) suggested it was a one-off.

I downloaded to test 5.4.93 RetroPrecise (5.5 beta with devx fortunately) and have been so pleased with it it has already become my normally booted puppy. I suppose I can just carry on using it without problem as I can (and have) update any components as I need to.

I would however ask for a reconsideration of the decision not to release a 5.5 RetroPrecise puppy given that one has been previously available. There are more and later machines with no PAE support than is thought.

Or perhaps I just need some clarification/timescales on the future for non-PAE Precise users to put my mind at rest?

Hi Sage:
On the single core netbook:
The normal 5.4.95rc live dvd takes 1:20 to get to the desktop with
"puppy pfix=ram"
The normal 5.5 live dvd with "puppy pfix=ram" takes 1:15 to get to the desktop.
The frugal install of the remastered 5.5 precise (700+ mb iso) from a class 10
SDHC card takes 2:45,it has a 1.25gb savefile as well.

PPM

#12 Post by peterw »

Hi anyone that is interested in the PPM and Mythbuntu

I have just installed this version of Puppy and am very excited about how good the PPM is. I asked it to install mythtv-frontend and it did! I noticed 92 dependencies before it moved on to the next screen. It downloaded them in three stages (after a download session, it then came up with a box with dependencies in, asking to choose the source and download - three times) and installed them all and it put a menu entry in Multimedia. That is impressive.

The only slight hang up was on group membership since I was not a member of mythtv. It kept asking if I wanted to join the group, stating that I needed sudo permission but initially did not give it to me. I am not sure how I gained the right. I just started copying permissions lines that mentioned the user name from a Mythbuntu /etc/group file to the one in Puppy changing the user name to root and suddenly it asked me if I wanted to proceed anyhow.

It picked up a backend without me doing anything and can play the recordings. I had to use the Mythbuntu Audio Setup to select the right driver.

I have done this on a Single Core Intel Atom board (1600MHz) with 1 GB of RAM

looking into battery and laptop overheating issue with PP5.5 The kernel changed its methods of dealing with these areas but the older methods supporting such has not made the changes needed.
It maybe a X windows driver issue, since my laptop governors was turned on.
Battery was shown to be defective (only 8% of capacity left  ) when I booted a new version of Fuduntu (laptop tweaked fedora-ubuntu hybrid release)

I have waited that aufs3.8 has been published. Now it has. I have compiled 3.8.2 kernel with f2fs support and I am now checking the firmwares for drivers and testing sns - frisbee interusability. The woof downloaded for this first test build the peebee version from common repo and I have changed now the woof to use noarch repo version. The second test build is now under work.

I have updated wpa_supplicant to version 1.0 and I have used rerwins newer dropwait patched dhcpcd. I have also gone through Barrys SPECS in woof for Precise Puppy and fixed my used SPECS.

The 3.8.2 nonPAE kernel is in use in this post. 01micko has been busy, he has created PHATslacko using about samely configured 3.8.2 kernel build...so it looks to be fine for Puppy.

Now that aufs and woof situation seems to be settled after flurry activity I am going to soon publish nonPAE Precise Puppy version.

Why new kernel and not retro. The reason is simple. The hardware needed drivers will support also newer comps and the older ones should not have much problems with newer kernel. My several tests and experimental builds has shown that older comps and laptops work fine with newer nonPAE kernel. There has been a lot problems with wireless with previous kernels. I hope that most of those problems have been fixed by patches in newer kernel.
There is though the need for checking that the firmware base is up to date but that can be done since the nonPAE kernel Upup Precise has been uploaded.....soon.

Thanks Bt, will look into the boot-up time a little more. Yes, pfix=ram, without adjuncts in the first instance.
Later: Aha! 1min22s from a DVD-RW. I usually use/recycle my vast collection of CD-RW.
But this one is slower than the alphas, betas, rc-s measured on the same kit.
Even later: Confirmed 2min12s from CD-RW. Odd!

About that sound problem I mentioned above with the Radeon HD 6250/6310, I read on different forums that users with similar hardware and the same problem solved this by blacklisting the snd-hda-codec-hdmi module or by creating a asound.conf file .

I'm not knowledgeable enough to oversee this, but maybe this is the direction towards a solution?
