Xiphos (formerly known as GnomeSword) Subject description: Linux Bible study tool |
|
Xiphos (formerly known as GnomeSword) is a Bible study tool written for Linux, UNIX, and Windows using GTK, offering a rich and featureful environment for reading, study, and research using modules from The SWORD Project and elsewhere. It is open-source software, and available free-of-charge to all. Currently, the Linux version can only be installed with Lucid distributions. It is comparable to Bibletime.
It is installed using Ubuntu repositories accessed by Puppy Package Manager in Lucid Pups. Missing dependencies are identified, however it still appears to work properly.
Xiphos has a Windows version although, I've had no success installing the Windows version using Wine on any Puppy distribution.

Precise 5.3.3.3 |
|
Impressive, pemasu's new Precise 5.3.3.3 runs Xiphos! Using the ppm, it installed perfectly from the ubuntu repositories. This is the only pup that I've been able to install Xiphos on without having some missing dependencies.
So far Precise is looking great. Give it a try.
Cheers,
Jim

Precise Puppy 5.4 |
|
Barry's latest release is working great and is one of the few that runs Xiphos which is installed from the Ubuntu repositories using the PPM. It's a great base for your Bible study since along with Xiphos, you can install Bibletime for a fine system using only free linux software.
Barry's Release Notes wrote: | Precise Puppy is built from Ubuntu Precise Pangolin 12.04.1+ binary DEB packages, hence has binary compatibility with Ubuntu and access to the vast Ubuntu package repository. Couple that with Puppy's tiny size, speed and ease-of-use, and this is one incredible pup!
This is the very first release of Precise Puppy. It is assigned version 5.4 to indicate it's position relative to the other puppies, such as Wary 5.3 and Slacko 5.3.3 (5.4 coming soon).
A lot of work has happened at the "Woof-level" since the release of Wary 5.3 in April 2012 -- of particular importance to Precise are the many enhancements to the Puppy Package Manager (PPM). At the "Precise-level" there has been a very long period of testing and refinement, over several months.
As Ubuntu Precise Pangolin is a 5-year Long Term Supported release, we expect that Precise Puppy will be also. |
Cheers,
Jim

Precise 5.5 |

Barry's latest final release version 5.5 is working great and is one of the few that runs Xiphos which is installed from the Ubuntu repositories using the PPM. It's a great base for your Bible study since along with Xiphos, you can install Bibletime for a fine system using only free linux software.

Pemasu's latest Upup Precise is working great. It also has the capability to install the latest Xiphos using the ppm as does Barry's Precise.

Guys, one thing to note about xiphos and I guess other Sword based programs is that you get MUCH better search performance when you build search indexes (or whatever they're called) for the modules - you can do this from the Xiphos module manager, but I think it is still only available if compiled against sword-svn.

Upup Raring 3.9.9 |
|
Pemasu has come up with another fine distribution. His latest Upup Raring is great, it's worked well for everything I've tried. Bibletime doesn't work properly, however Xiphos does. That bug is caused by Ubuntu Raring though, not pemasu's Upup. For Xiphos to have any resources to use, Bibletime still has to be installed.
If you want to use Xiphos, try Upup Raring 3.9.9.
Yes, that is the Windows program, Quickverse 2011, running under Wine in the background. It's not supported now, however it works well under Wine and some bookstores have great sales prices on it and it has some fine resources that are not available under open source.
