stifling. In this link: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 979#645979

you will find tar ball of kernel kit. Inside it is several my used and 01micko`s used DOTconfigs of 3.X kernels. Inside folder configs_extra.

Just grap from there. I think there isnt 3.0 version, but the one used in 3.1 or newer should work also.

And...you can use that kernel kit for compiling. It is nowadays real easy to use....about kernel compiling for dummies....really. Not much expertise is needed when using kernel-kit. Thanks to Iguleder and 01micko. Unasked advertisement, lol.

thanks

FWIW, Precise 3.7.2 didn't work on the newer Nvidia boxes either ....... everything else worked so well that I compiled k-3.2.37 (latest at the time) for it.
Aren't computers fun......... :)

Haven't tried the kernel kit yet .... is it really that easy? Better than the old-school way?

Hello Pemasu
There have been reports of freezing of certain comps with 3.8.X kernels in Upup Raring
I'm not clear what "freezing" means i.e temporary or permanent.

What I found playing back MPEG2 video on VLC 2.1 was intermittent breaks in playback. But it did not happen with H.264 playback.

Since it was the one with very low CPU load that had the problem, i guessed that it might be to do with idle.

I put idle=poll on the kernel line, and that fixed the problem at the cost of a few Watts, at idle.

idle=mwait also fixes the problem without increasing the power noticeably. But I thought mwait was the default. Has the 3.8.x kernel changed the default?

I have only tried idle=mwait briefly, so I don't know whether it is a complete solution.

ABIWORD, GTK - "Trouble"

#126 Post by pmp »

Good afternoon, pemasu, and all,

i am just trying upup raring 3.8.4.2. Want testing Abiword with a 5 MB Testfile (txt). Open it faster than other puppys, well - nice. I tried to make a change in 'preference', and CRASH. The Error messages looks like a gtk-problem (see attachment, copy from .history).

Can i get help to solve it?

I'm install Raring with a Frugal Install on my Fujitsu T902.
But system, after boot, freezes and hangs at Quick Setup.
It's happened only to me?
I try rebooting but result is the same....

I using with success and satisfaction Upup Precise Kernel 3.8.3.1...

Raring-3.8.4.2

#131 Post by sszindian »

Nice build... what I have tested so far (a routine I use for most builds) works well. If it didn't, you know me... I'd say so

Did by chance anyone find a Google Earth '.sfs' that would run in raring? I've tried about 8 various ones I have and the best I can get is the initial 'flash screen' from a few of them?

This one works, Google_Earth-6.0.3.2197-luki.sfs
I've been using Google maps and find it to be very good as well.

Opera SFS will not work

#133 Post by tlchost »

Running Raring from bootable USB drive, formatted in fat32.

sfs files of Opera 12.14 and 12.15 that were made via dir2sfs and others downloaded
in the forum will not run. The sfs files run in Slacko 5.5.

Opera 12.15, extracted to /mnt/home runs with no problems.

Kind of a show stopper for me, since Opera is my browser of choice.

Google Earth in Raring

Hmmm... I tried that one but only got to the flash-screen, it usually works with most of the newer puppy builds, maybe I have to look into it a little deeper or, might be my particular box has something Raring don't like and won't let it work?

'Thanks for the comeback.'

EDIT: (Today 5 Apr) Tried several configs with Google_Earth-6.0.3.2197-luki.sfs and it just won't do anything past the flash-screen??? Something missing for sure!

Thank You Pemasu, in fact is the same problem that I have with Exprimo.
Perhaps Xorg version is older? (I can't see because computer freezes instantly)

Dear Pemasu and other Raring developers:

Thanks for this version which is the best I have tried so far for my hardware (a netbook using the Intel N2600 cpu, PowerVR cedarview graphics).

I made a previous post on another thread a while back regarding sound issues in "Carolina", which I could correct by blacklisting its gma_500 driver. I am pleased to report that with Upup Raring this issue is resolved.

I also tried Slacko 5.4 PAE, but definitely prefer Upup Raring. Slacko seems to have run the fan a fair bit more. With this version even when the fan is running the air exhaust seems to be cooler. Probably I prefer a non PAE Kernel, particularly for a 1GB machine.

Like Slacko I had the impression that when looking at JPG images that there was a too much blue from the display, unlike Slacko I can now use xgamma to turn down the blue channel.

xorgwizard was able to change the display driver to modesetting without error seems all is OK.

Mplayer can play videos circa 460x360 at 10% cpu albeit without enabling software rescaling. I prefer to save the cpu cycles, and switch the display via xrandr to 640x480 to make the video as large as possible without software scaling.

Overall I would recommend this version for intel based netbooks.

I would like to see a "lite" version with some of the major packages like Gnumeric, Abiword and Seamonkey removed.

@ tomo3, thanks for Abiword pet, works fine, thanks a lot.

I lend my Geforce-GT-220X to a person, his Graphic-Card is 'burn-out'.
So my Graphic is now OnBoard- Intel. GOT some X-crashes.
1) on selection Menu-System-Hardinfo-Summary, the screen is
changing to inclined differ colored blocks.
Mouse and keyboard without function, no return to command line
possible, had to kill the mashine with the power-bottom.
2) open Seamonkey, directly crashes.
3) The ''strange" Abiword, Osmo, Ding, Xawtv, Speedcrunch ..
runnning without a crash.
**) with the Geforce not these Problems.

The Solution from JamesC add "nouveau.noaccel=1" to the kernel line,
works, thanks to him.

I' am posting now from raring.

.. continue my testing
1) Ding (excellent dictionnaire), installed from ppm ubuntu-package,
TROUBLE: no menu entry, no icon, and .. no "word-book".
Solution, solved, see the Solution.tar.gz (Attachement)
2) Xawtv, watch Tv, TROUBLE: "cant load any fonts", solved, see
Solution.tar.gz

I've now tested adding "nouveau.noaccel=1" to the kernel line with several of the versions that previously froze the computer with the troublesome Nvidia chip.... including Precise 3.8.3.1 ...... and the freezing has stopped. At least with this particular Nvidia chip. :)
