Puppy on a Acer C7 Chromebook? is that hard to do?

#1 Post by nooby »

The Acer C7 Chromebook is rather cheap price
so attractive alternative to all the cheap Win8
with UEFI that needs certification or knowledge how to
change the UEFI thing reliably.

Here is one text among many similar on how to get Ubuntu
on it. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/12/ ... hromebook/
Because Chromebooks use a special BIOS and bootloader that is distinct from the ones used in standard Windows laptops, you can't use them to boot just any operating system. This is where ChrUbuntu comes in—it's a version of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS modified to work with Chrome OS hardware. Once it's installed you should be able to use the C7 to do just about everything you could do with a standard laptop running Ubuntu, and the Chrome OS partition is left on the disk so you can still boot into it and use it if you're so inclined.

These instructions should technically work with any Chromebook, but of all the ones OVERPRICED today, the C7 is perhaps best-suited to run alternate operating systems. It comes with a roomy (if slow) hard drive out of the box,
It has 320GB HD while the Samsung only 16GB.

but this worry me. The BIOS is very different so them have a
special made Ubuntu.

One would need to somehow piggyback on the Ubuntu one then?

199USD which is very good price? Here in Sweden they add a lot of
cash for to get economy for the retailers. 2300SEK
but still some 1000SEK less than other small laptops.

Thanks nooby, for the "heads up !" Looks like this Acer Chromebook falls
into the category of "The Joy of a cheap price is soon forgotten when you realize what you got for your money!" cheers

I have the chance to buy it now coming Sunday
for only 2300SEK that is some 325USD? if 1USD = 7SEK
2GB DRAM and 320GB HD no DVD though

Still that is very cheap. It has Intel celeron CPU so
should be possible to dual boot Puppy on it?

Unless the BIOS is set to never allow that one boot
anything other them made a password or something
locking us out?

Would them always allow one boot from USB? That way
maybe I could still use it?

I have read up more on it and it seems that if one want to
put puppy on the 320GB HD then one have to let Puppy
ride on CroUbuntu a special version of Crome Ubuntu
or one would need to go into Developer mode and
always use an USB with puppy on it but then that puppy
need to be compatible with all the hardware on the machine.

we don't know if that is the case yet?

Take my experience of using Slacko 5.5 on the HP/Compaq
Desktop it fails while the Slacko 5.4 works and Lupu 528 works.

but something about the graphics makes 5.5 to fail to show desktop.

So I will wait until somebody can confirm them booted a puppy
using a frugal install on USB on the machine.

Yes nooby,I understand exactly what you are saying.I personally stay clear of anything that would force me to run something that is not my idea. This sort of reminds me of some company that I vaguely remember but when my hard. drive crashed, some years ago.I got some memory sticks and found Puppy.I never looked back. Bow Wow  cheers

Here are link to people who try to put other linux on the Acer
and the Samsung cheap version of Chromebooks.

https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton

A kind of Chroot they say it is. I have no idea what that is
even after reading the explanation they gave.

does not seem to be virtualization and not dual boot either.

so it is a kind of patch or what? here is another such or same
https://plus.google.com/communities/107 ... d4943477b6

here i ssomething intesting but I don't much of it.
http://liliputing.com/2012/10/using-the ... ebook.html

I can buy it now coming Sunday but should I?
Chrome seems to be Gento with a Chrome layer
that lock it to Chrome. You can not do Gento it is always Chrome?

so the Chroot thing seems to be a kind of take over of root
so them can do normal Gento stuff? Not sure.

But the last link above tells about booting from SD card
that would be a good thing so that could support that I dare
to buy the Chromebook and not lose the money on a Google Brick .

Hope some of you find better links or can tell how you got puppy going on it. 2300SEK is USD is today some 363.13 USD so a bit more expensive
that if I had lived in USA. :) but still less than the 3495SEK to 551.80 USD
for other Acers same size. almost 200USD cheaper.

Or should I wait another year maybe and something easier to use linux on
comes along and with no fan and lower power consumption?

No hurry to buy is it? Maybe if I wait there will come a Smartphone
that can be used as a laptop at home with usb keyboard and mouse
and external screen like I do with the netbooks now.

The bigger Chromebook Pixel costs 1500USD
and the two I talk about around 250 or so.
Samsung and Acer. The Samsung has 16GB SSD
while the Acer C7 has 320GB mechanical spinning HD. :)
Both have 2GB DRAM while the Pixel has 4GB from scratch.

Another difference may be the BIOS. Pixel has for partitions
with one Dead only then two read/write and one hidden.
that one can access using a key combination.

All this is the Pixel so maybe the two cheap ones can not
access that hidden part that is needed for to boot using USB?

Does anybody know?

I have asked in Linux mint forum but as usual
them are not willing to help.

Finally somebody seems to have tested and know what them do :)

But way too complex description for me to follow.

Barry S. Schultz share his knowledge. Thanks for that.

Hi Nooby,
Same questions I have. I want to know the latest from you, as you might have been following the issues with puppy and Acer-C710-2834.

1. Is it possible to install puppy 5.7 or any other linux distro on to the internal HDD of the Acer-C710?

2. I am likely to experiment on a chromebook next week; one of my neighbors ordered a cheap acer-c710-2834/4gb ram/16gb ssd/celeron 1007u] at 90bucks. He is hoping to replace chrome os with any distro of linux.

any guidance or advice is appreciated.

Hi rokytnji,

Thanks for the post. I am now reading the links one-by-one. I will get the machine next week into my 'home lab'. I do not want to flash the BIOS, as the machine is not my own; it belongs to a medical doctor, she just started working. So, I will go with non-intrusive methods.
Thanks
