You can see what a difference Puppy will make without having to install it. Just boot the CD and play around with it. You have enough RAM to do that. The Mandriva install should have created a swap partition, which Puppy will see and use. If the Mandriva partitions are formatted ext2 or ext3 then Puppy will create a save file in one of them unless you tell it not to when you shut down.

It depends.
What applications do you use in Mandriva?

Some hardware works better with Kernel 2.4 (Puppy 109), some other better with Kernel 2.6 (Puppy 2).

We currently got reports, that Puppy 2.02 is faster on old computers than Puppy 2.10, so you should prefer that.

You can download 2.02 here:
http://puptrix.org/isos/regression2/
This is a special version with better driver-support than the original Puppy 2.02.

If you need KDE in addition, there are 2 solutions for Puppy 2.02, a very big one (525 MB), and a small one:

big:
http://dotpups.de/puppy-releases/Megapu ... README.htm
small:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10546

As the Puppy109-KDE.iso already includes KDE, it might the the easiest solution for new users that need KDE.

Gimp is there in many versions, from 1.2 for very slow computers to 2.3.x.
You can install them with PupGet or the new PSI:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10960

Office:
Abiword and Gnumeric come with all versions of Puppy, and are fine as standalone applications.
But if you often must edit files from Microsoft office (like .doc), you will require OpenOffice, that has better import-filters.
But OpenOffice will run (very very) very slow with only 128 MB of ram.

OpenOffice is part of the big 525 MB-addon, it also is available "standalone" as a dotpup without KDE:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9102

There also is a ISO of Puppy 2.02, that already includes OpenOffice:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=10461
If you don't need KDE and wireless drivers, this might be the best solution for you.
The wireless drivers would need the modified "regression-2.02" I mentioned before.

I cannot say what is faster with 128 MB:
Puppy 2.02 regression + OpenOffice Dotpup
or
Puppy Office 2.03 CE

You should try both, as it can make a significent speed-difference, if it is part of the ISO or not.
