How do i delete files from the personal Save file?

#1 Post by RaptureWatcher »

okay i'm using Slacko 5.3.3 and i want to delete files from the save file because i keep running out of space down to 1 MB. Where in the file manager can i go to delete files i dont need or is there another way?

Also Puppy Package Manager does not work and i dont know why?

Thanks

If you want to delete files from save file only:
* Boot with pfix=ram option.
* Click on save file to mount it.
* Delete unneeded files.
* Click on save file to unmount it.

You can also increase save file size this way:
* Menu / Utility / Resize personal storage file.
* Shut down, then reboot.
Also Puppy Package Manager does not work and i dont know why?
Test it with pfix=ram option (see above).
If it works OK, save file is probably corrupted.

Boot with pfix=ram option.
i used to know how to do this but i've forgotten it has something to do with the startup?

At boot for a few seconds you'll see a display with puppy logo and down a line with:

boot:

Begin write fastly at that prompt:

"boot:" puppy pfix=ram

Press return. You'll load puppy in ram without save file.
For Puppy Package Manager see:

Install the patch and it will work.

I don't know YUMI. I have read now something from the internet. If you don't want to burn a CD of puppy or you don't have CD I suggest you to create a puppy pendrive with Universal Installer and syslinux. You can also try with Unetbootin. I don't know other ways.

Look at /initrd/pup_rw/. This folder is the mountpoint of your savefile. Before you change anything, it`s a good idea to make a backup of the save file. A good possibility to find out what sucks your space is the use of Gdmap from menu.

Edit: Maybe I should explain that this post refers to booting with the save file and not with pfix=ram. :wink:

I notice they say type quickly but I prefer to hit F2 and then read all my choices and take my time

that is interesting. I would want to try. so if I make a copy
of the savefile and hide it somewhere then I can experiment
and delete files in /initrd/pup_rw/ and then reboot and
when it boot again it should not have the deleted files there?
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though
