Jessops Universal Card Reader: not work with Slacko-5.3.3.1?

#1 Post by Sylvander »

1. Does the reader need a driver or what?
Plugged in to the appropriate slot, is a new empty Sandisk Ultra SDHC 16GB memory card = item 2a5 below.
No unallocated space seen; "no device detected" for each USB device chosen in GParted.

2. I want to write http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/arm/test/raspi-sap6-5.105-alpha4/raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz to the card.
How to copy the image file to an SD card.

Because:
2a. I bought the following hardware, which has just been delivered:

2a1. Raspberry Pi Model B 512 MB RAM Latest VERSION

2a2. Clear Transparent Case Box Enclosure for Raspberry Pi Computer by SB component

2a3. Trust 10 Port Usb 2.0 Power Hub
I was intending to use this to power the RasPi [using my wife's USB to micro-USB cable from the Lumia 610], but instead [for the moment] am using the [5v, 1.2watt] complete power unit that came with my wife's "Nokia Lumia 610".

2a4. For Raspberry Pi - 16GB branded SDHC SD Card preloaded with latest Raspbian "wheezy" Linux operating system & partitioned to use full memory card.
This booted OK, but reported some problem with a line of code in a config file.
PROBLEM:
Couldn't figure how to do vital stuff with it...
[like connecting by Powerline Adapter to the router upstairs at the Puppy PC. i.e. Couldn't configure a wired network connection.]
So couldn't get on the web.
Also, didn't see any file browser.

SO:
2a5. Sandisk Ultra SDHC 16GB.
I'm attempting to write the "Puppy for Raspberry Pi alpha4" image to this empty memory card.
I hope to more easily know how to get things done with Puppy loaded by the Raspberry Pi.

2a6. Logitech Wireless Combo MK520.
These worked 1st time and easily [during boot, and when loaded] with the "Wheezy" OS pre-written to item a4 above.

Hi Sylvander,

How old is your Card Reader? I am wondering if your Card Reader will handle the larger HC (High Capacity) cards? If not, maybe there is a firmware update for your Reader that would address such a limitation?

Just some thoughts,

It's certainly not recently bought, although it looks new, and hardly ever used.
Perhaps around 3 or 5 year old?
I last used it with Windows 2000 well into the 1st decade of the 2000's.
I think I used the Win98SE driver in Win2k.
I'm unable to find any newer Windows driver, nor any Linux driver whatever.

Any idea where I might find a firmware update?

Anyone know of 1 or more card readers suitable for use with Puppy?
Need something that will allow me to write an R-Pi image [Puppy or Debian-Wheezy] to my spare 16GB SDHC.

Looks like I messed up the Debian-Wheezy OS as follows:
First time I booted Wheezy, typed in "pi" OK, but when typing "raspberry" and not seeing any characters on screen [this is by design], I in correctly thought the keyboard wasn't functioning, and powered off.
That probably corrupted the Wheezy OS.
So at 2nd boot there was no opportunity to make config choices...
No Start menu, so no way to run most programs...
Only the icons on a blank/white desktop, that offer little functionality.

I tried using my "Centon DC5" camera as a means of accessing the contents of an SDHC card within, but Puppy couldn't see the content, with the camera connected, and powered up, and switched on.

Hi Sylvander,

To get around the limitation mentioned by Monsie I bought one of these from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral-USB-Si ... 2_edpp_url

Just £1.79 it has handled everything I have thrown at it.

That's super: I thought of buying that, but didn't know if it would work with Puppy.
Have you tried it with Puppy, and does it work with Puppy? [You didn't say explicitly]
If you reply yes to the above, I'll buy it ASAP.
It costs so little, I think I'll go ahead and buy on the assumption it does.
Oops, it's an add-on item that's only dispatched with other goods worth £20.
Need to see if I need any other stuff.

OK...
Decided to buy...

1. D2D - GENUINE NOKIA AC50X 1.3A HIGH OUTPUT CHARGER FOR LUMIA 610 710 800 C2 X2 X3 C5 N8 E5 X6 C3 X5 C6 WITH MICRO USB DATA SYNC CHARGE CABLE
5v 1.3A
£7.38+free UK delivery.
My wife has a "Nokia Lumia 610" smart phone, and I'm already using its power unit to run the R-Pi, and it works just fine so far as I can tell.
If I get this we'll have 1 for use with the R-Pi [plus backup for the Lumia], and another for the "Lumia 610".

2. OpenELEC XBMC media center for Raspberry Pi - 16GB branded SDHC SD Card preloaded with latest XBMC operating system & partitioned to use full memory card.
I hear good things about XBMC.
Would prefer RaspBMC, but don't see that on offer at Amazon.
Need to avoid messing this one up, and re-write the Debian Wheezy.
£13.99+free UK delivery.

3. Integral USB 2.0 Single Slot SD Reader.
£1.89+free delivery as add-on with goods worth at least £20.

1+2 = £21.37 Oops, not dispatched by Amazon, so they don't qualify! :(
I'll buy them anyway, but need to find other stuff worth £20 that Will be dispatched by Amazon.
Will leave them sitting in my basket for now.
1+2+3 = £23.26

1st item to arrive is the Nokia charger/power-unit.
PROBLEM:
a. The cable is only 800mm long.
Not long enough to use with the R-Pi. :(

b. The power unit that came with my wife's Lumia 610 is 1200mm long, so I guess I'll use that with the R-Pi, and my wife can use the 800mm cable when charging her Lumia 610.

c. Phoned the supplier, and was told that the 800mm cable with this order is correct, and that a genuine cable normally supplied with a Lumia 610 should be 1000mm.
Non-genuine cables may be longer, so the 1200mm cable is non-genuine.
He's going to send me a 1000mm cable at no extra cost.

d. The 800mm cable is thicker than the 1200mm cable.

Received this morning by post:
The genuine Nokia cable promised for free by "Day2Day Accessories".
It is 1500mm long. :D
And thicker than the non-genuine thin cable. :D
Cost me nothing. :D
I'll use it with the R-Pi

Received in this morning's post:
All items remaining to be delivered.
i.e.
From Amazon:
a. "The Raspberry Pi User Guide".
Will now begin reading this in the hope I avoid the mistakes previously made when attempting to make 1st use of the 1st SDHC memory card loaded with "Raspbian Wheezy".
[I powered off improperly {when I saw no password characters appear on-screen as I typed (this is by design)}...]

b. The "Integral USB 2.0 Single Slot SD Reader".
Seems to be working OK; I can see 2 partitions appear on the desktop when I connect it with the "Wheezy" card in place.
GParted shows:
sdb1=56MiB,fat16,LBA flag set. [When mounted shows many files]
sdb2=14.57GiB,ext4. [When mounted shows many folders]
It's my intention to re-write the "Wheezy" OS to this memory card after reading up on R-Pi.

c. "5 LED USB & Wind Up Dynamo Torch".
[Now connected to PC's USB socket to make certain it is fully charged]

From "Crazy Daisy":
d. "OpenELEC XBMC media center for Raspberry Pi-16GB [Kingston class-4] branded SDHC SD card preloaded..."
This card now in place in the R-Pi board, but I won't power it on until I feel I understand what I aught to be doing and how.

Having read the book to page 20...
I've now flashed/written the "Puppy for Raspberry Pi Alpha 4" image to the blank SD memory card as follows:

1. Blank memory card inserted into slot in the memory card reader, and the reader plugged into a handy USB slot in the PC.
The card appeared as [unmounted] sdb1 on the desktop.
GParted showed it had a small unallocated space at the beginning, and the remainder of the available space was occupied by a FAT32 partition.
Closed GParted.

2. Ran Xfe, navigated to the previously saved image file named raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz downloaded from:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/arm/test/raspi-sap6-5.105-alpha4/raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz...
Followed the instructions given at:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/arm/test/raspi-sap6-5.105-alpha4/howto-copy-to-sd-card.htm
Both of the above originally linked at:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02910

3. Checked the name given by the Puppy to the memory card drive.
The partition was named sdb1, and therefore the drive name was sdb->[this being the name I must use in the command following in 4 below].

4. Ran a terminal window in the folder holding the image file, and copied and pasted the following command into the window, and hit <Enter>:
[checked that all parts of the command were correct]
unxz --stdout raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz | dd of=/dev/sdb

5. The red LED on the reader began to blink as the necessary partitions/formatting/files were copied from the image file to the drive.
I then entered the command sync, and that completed in an instant.
Here's the terminal record of those commands and results:

Code: Select all

# unxz --stdout raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz | dd of=/dev/sdb
7536640+0 records in
7536640+0 records out
3858759680 bytes (3.9 GB) copied, 1014 s, 3.8 MB/s
# sync
#
6. Now to continue reading the "Raspberry Pi User Guide".

1. SUCCESS! :D
I've re-written [flashed?] the "Debian Wheezy" image over the existing copy on the Wheezy memory card...
And...
Booted it...
And made the necessary config choices [not sure I got the keyboard and locale correct]...
And...
Got to the desktop...
Which now has a Start menu. :D
Didn't have one before.

2. Now [ASAP (available time permitting)] to copy certain OS files from the Wheezy card to the "Puppy Raspberry Pi alpha 4" card, to try to make it succeed in booting.
