1. Does the reader need a driver or what?
Plugged in to the appropriate slot, is a new empty Sandisk Ultra SDHC 16GB memory card = item 2a5 below.
No unallocated space seen; "no device detected" for each USB device chosen in GParted.
2. I want to write http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/arm/test/raspi-sap6-5.105-alpha4/raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz to the card.
How to copy the image file to an SD card.
Because:
2a. I bought the following hardware, which has just been delivered:

I was intending to use this to power the RasPi [using my wife's USB to micro-USB cable from the Lumia 610], but instead [for the moment] am using the [5v, 1.2watt] complete power unit that came with my wife's "Nokia Lumia 610".
2a4. For Raspberry Pi - 16GB branded SDHC SD Card preloaded with latest Raspbian "wheezy" Linux operating system & partitioned to use full memory card.
This booted OK, but reported some problem with a line of code in a config file.
PROBLEM:
Couldn't figure how to do vital stuff with it...
[like connecting by Powerline Adapter to the router upstairs at the Puppy PC. i.e. Couldn't configure a wired network connection.]
So couldn't get on the web.
Also, didn't see any file browser.

How old is your Card Reader? I am wondering if your Card Reader will handle the larger HC (High Capacity) cards? If not, maybe there is a firmware update for your Reader that would address such a limitation?

My [u]username[/u] is pronounced: "mun-see". Derived from my surname, it was my nickname throughout high school.
It's certainly not recently bought, although it looks new, and hardly ever used.

Looks like I messed up the Debian-Wheezy OS as follows:
First time I booted Wheezy, typed in "pi" OK, but when typing "raspberry" and not seeing any characters on screen [this is by design], I in correctly thought the keyboard wasn't functioning, and powered off.
That probably corrupted the Wheezy OS.
So at 2nd boot there was no opportunity to make config choices...
No Start menu, so no way to run most programs...
Only the icons on a blank/white desktop, that offer little functionality.
I tried using my "Centon DC5" camera as a means of accessing the contents of an SDHC card within, but Puppy couldn't see the content, with the camera connected, and powered up, and switched on.
Perhaps around 3 or 5 year old?

Not long enough to use with the R-Pi.
b. The power unit that came with my wife's Lumia 610 is 1200mm long, so I guess I'll use that with the R-Pi, and my wife can use the 800mm cable when charging her Lumia 610.
c. Phoned the supplier, and was told that the 800mm cable with this order is correct, and that a genuine cable normally supplied with a Lumia 610 should be 1000mm.
Non-genuine cables may be longer, so the 1200mm cable is non-genuine.
He's going to send me a 1000mm cable at no extra cost.
d. The 800mm cable is thicker than the 1200mm cable.

I've now flashed/written the "Puppy for Raspberry Pi Alpha 4" image to the blank SD memory card as follows:
1. Blank memory card inserted into slot in the memory card reader, and the reader plugged into a handy USB slot in the PC.
The card appeared as [unmounted] sdb1 on the desktop.
GParted showed it had a small unallocated space at the beginning, and the remainder of the available space was occupied by a FAT32 partition.
Closed GParted.
2. Ran Xfe, navigated to the previously saved image file named raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz downloaded from:

[checked that all parts of the command were correct]
unxz --stdout raspi-sd-4gb-sap6-5.105.img.xz | dd of=/dev/sdb
5. The red LED on the reader began to blink as the necessary partitions/formatting/files were copied from the image file to the drive.
I then entered the command sync, and that completed in an instant.
