Broken Xorg in Fluppy

#1 Post by heywoodj »

I have been using Fluppy-013 for a couple of years on a full install on my HP/Compaq nx6325 laptop(1.6 GHz, 1GB). I was trying out the Audacity 2.0 pet when the system froze. After a hard reboot, all seems well until starting X, where it hangs, similar to http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 11&t=76782.

I have run e2fsck and on reboot, when I'm not in a repeated xorgwizard cycle, I get at best, a quick flash of the gray "successful X setup" type screen with the "X" in the middle, followed by a hanging black screen.

I have tried renaming /etc/X11/xorg.conf to force a new xorg.conf to be built.
I have also tried copying the entire /etc/X11 folder from a Live CD boot of Fluppy. Either way, the best case is a flash of gray screen followed by black screen, but usually the xorgwizard cycle.

If xvesa is selected in xorgwizard, I get dumped to the prompt.

I'd rather not reinstall but unless I can resolve this, that's what needs to be done.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thx.

The same thing happened to me when trying a Lucid version of
Audacity 2. I was able to boot up I believe since I'm still using the
same full install of fluppy but I can't run video clips.

My only suggestion is trying to switch your video driver as well.
There is a log that you can read --->/var/log/Xorg.0.log
It might explain what file can't be loaded by xorg.

Exchanging a video driver shouldn't be hard to do
if you can boot up with a CD.

I am currently using the 'nv' driver because I have a nvidia graphics card
and fluppy12. 'nouveau' driver began to be used in fluppy13.
fluppy13 also began to use fbcon.ko with nouveau driver

Intel graphics card used 'intel'

I'm not at my home computer but here's where to look

The Xorg drivers can be found in
/usr/[X11R7/]lib/xorg/modules/drivers
/usr/[X11R7/]lib/xorg/modules/drivers-alternate
/usr/lib/x/drivers-alternate
/usr/lib/x/drivers-backup
dependent on Puppy Subversions .

The kernel drivers can be found in
/lib/modules/2.6.37.6/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau
/lib/modules/2.6.33.2/kernel/drivers/video/console
/lib/modules/2.6.30.9-i586-dpup005-Celeron2G/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko.gz
for instance .

A good full install fix:

Boot your original install media.
Run the full install again;
choose upgrade not wipe.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

Thanks for your input. I've gotten a little closer, I got the " ignore or cancel" window to come up after trying the Xorg drivers, but then still the repeating xorgwizard cycle.

Ironically, the /var/log/Xorg.0.log was missing though the directory and other files were there.

I was thinking of doing this but was afraid to lose my customized settings, desktop icons, etc.

I've been doing it for a few years now without ever losing
my settings.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
