Getting started

#2 Post by raffy »

1. x86 Compatible Phones that can use Puppy - the best bet are PDAs using the Intel PXA27x series of processors. Nokia E61 is another good candidate.

2. Best start page for all Puppy services - We settled this in practice by linking to the important Puppy sites on our front page. The puppylinux.org site does this as well as Barry's splash page in Seamonkey/Puppy2. Puppy 1.09CE has this on the Firefox splash page. Even mypep.net (that I started) complies with this.

But if there should be only one start page, maybe it has to be www.puppylinux.org

3. OLPC and Puppy - We help OLPC by pushing our own language/translation efforts. In the end, the users will have a choice of OS, and a translated Puppy will be quite useful to them, as Puppy is best suited to their machine. Red Hat is OLPC's founding partner so they enjoy the first option to deliver software for OLPC.

4. Direction of Puppy - this is an anniversary question! My generic answer = be friendly and helpful as always :D Usage determines a software's future, so the more users getting to know and use Puppy, the better. The education sector is beginning to take notice.

5. Javascript in Puppy - The issue is more of getting a small browser, and it so happens that Dillo, the current tiny browser in Puppy, has no Javascript ability yet.

6. Porting to other machines - Xbox and PS3 are both possibilities. We need volunteer developers.

Intel PXA27x series are ARM9 processors like Sharp Zaurus or PepperPad 2 or Simpad. Nokia E61 also has an ARM9 CPU therefore x86 Linux will never run on any of these.

Here is a starting link for people thinking about porting software to different machines: http://debianlinux.net/linux.html#kernel_ports

ARM and PPC

#5 Post by raffy »

With T2, Puppy should be able to handle the ARM and PPC. Here are links to get started:

Cheap PPC box (kuro box)

Cheap ARM (and x86 LX800 from AMD)

(mentioned in http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9569 )

DSLinux for the Nintendo/ARM (thanks to darkerror for mentioning it)
