Itronix laptop won't run pupwin98

#1 Post by onecrazydriver »

I have an Itronix xc6250 laptop (14 gig, 128 meg ram, 266 meg processor and win98). It does not have floppy, cd drive, etc. I tried to boot using the pupwin 98 instrutions. It fails to find the pup001 file but continues to boot (it says it will lose all data at shutdown). Xvesa does not work. Xorg does work and get to "finish" then nothing. Arrow in middle of screen, no desktop, mouse will not move arrow, just locked up. Any suggestions?

root and download

pup001 should be at the C:\ (root) of your drive, and those errors are typical of a bad download. Try checking the md5sum of your download.

When I open winows explorer, pup001 and usr_cram.fs are both directly0 in C:\ The checksum program showed good files.

Hardware

#5 Post by raffy »

So we have to understand your hardware more. (I remember now one Epson laptop that always freezes when loading any version of Puppy.)

What hardware do you have, and also the version of Puppy that you are using?

Could you also tell us how your hard drive is partitioned?
And, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, or what?

Reference the solution to the problem outlined in :
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9723
I don't have USB. How would the commands in step 6 and 7 be different for a pcmcia smartmedia card adapter? In win98 it shows up as G:

6.Insert the flash disk into the laptop's USB port and mount it by typing

modprobe usb-storage
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash

7. Copy the file from the flash drive to the X11 directory by typing

cp /mnt/flash/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf

thanks

Puppy Is Working!!! sort of...
I deleted the pup001 file (that was on c:/ of my win98 drive) and downloaded and unzipped the 256 meg pup001 file from http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/linnwin/contents.htm
Still same result. I deleted that file and got the 128 meg pup001 file.
Puppy booted, saw and mounted the pup001 file, continued through the xorg wizard then locked up again. I rebooted and the next time it booted til the bash shell and I typed xwin and puppy desktop came up.

I configure the ethernet network and firewall with the wizards, used cfdisk to make another partition and tried to use the wizard to do a hard drive install. It wants the cd and pupwin98 boots off hda1.

Also every time I click on a desktop icon it locks up. shouldn't mozilla run with 128 meg ram?

Any icon? I'm not sure if it should run on 128M or not. Have you tried a swap partition?

I am posting this message on my Itronix laptop using puppy109ce booted with Pup4dos.
Dillo seems to work well and obviously the ethernet wizard worked. I am trying to do hard drive install but with no cd drive it stops when looking for a file on cd(vmlinuz?). How can I do hard drive install without cd drive?

thanks for suggestions
