[SOLVED] How to install wifi Edimax EW-7811Un (Wary 5.51)?

Hello Community!

I recently installed Wary 5.5.1 (Kernel 2.6.32.59) on my old Laptop( Compaq Evo 620c) .So far it#s awesome, very fast. Since the onboard wifi is very old(no WPA etc..) i bought a new wifi usb stick.
It's the Edimax EW-7811Un with a Realtek RTL8188CUS chip.
So far it seems, it is not in the list of modules in the Internet Connection Wizard. Since there are Linux Drivers on the Driver CD, I tried installing those, but to be honest, I have no idea how to do that. Even the Ndiswrapper couldn't get the Windows Drivers to work. It still doesnt detect the wifi device.
After reading here in the forums for a couple of hours, I found out, that .pet files are the easiest way to install things. I eventually found pet files for my wifi device. I also found out that you can't install .pet files from former kernel/puppy versions
So, is there maybe somebody who could give me a step-by-step tutorial on how to install the Linux Drivers from the cd, or maybe has the correct .pet file for my wary/kernel somewhere?
I am bit frustrated, and my Linux Knowledge is very very very limited.

I have that exact same wi-fi adapter here and found that it wouldn't work in Wary (or rather, it doesn't detect WPA signals). I suspect that the driver is installed but may be an old version or something. I never realy investigated further or tried to compile a new driver because the adapter works fine out of the box in other Puppies including Racy so I just don't use it with Wary. Not sure how old your laptop is but you may find that it is even worth trying the new Precise 5.6 instead. Drivers have to be compiled specifically for the kernel so are not interchangeable between Puppies and this might explain why the one in Racy works but the one in Wary doesn't.

I know there was a firmware upgrade needed with this adapter but that is definitely now included in recent Puppies.

This driver might work with Wary kernel.

Precise 5.6 also has this driver.

Usually depends on how big a jump between o.s. and
kernel versions.

Downloaded that .pet to my Wary5 install.
Clicked file to install it.
Clicked connect icon > load modules.
8192cu usb > load module.

Give it a try.

I tried that, that's what I meant with "pets from older kernels don't work" ^^
cause it is put in another directory (/lib/modules/2.6.25.16 instead of 2.6.32.59)
Always: "Could not found" when I try to load it.

edit: racy puppy complains about my old hardware and won't even start the live cd ^^


btw: old hardware means 10 year old laptop with pentium m 1,5Ghz , 512mb ram...

Seems it may need RTL8192c which exists in Precise 5.6.

I was always led to believe that drivers have to be compiled with the kernel sources loaded and can only be run in Puppies using the corresponding kernel version, but I could be wrong or there could be exceptions I suppose.

Anyway, I took a quick glance at a review of the old laptop and saw that it is Pentium M. I am told that these do need a non PAE kernel in most cases which might be why Racy won't run. The new Precise 5.6 is non PAE and there are others eg Slacko 5.5 (4g version). I have an old Dell with Pentium M and that runs fine on either of those.

Edit:- Just to add, on my old Dell Inspiron 2200 with Pentium M, the internal wi-fi card works, but I plugged in the Edimax USB adapter and connected via that just to test. It all works out of the box on both those 2 Puppies. You have the option to connect with Frisbee as well which many people find easier to use than the other tools.

Pentium M with a 400mhz fsb (like my Inspiron 700M) will not
boot PAE.
Pentium M with 533fsb (2005 and newer) will.

The M processors were very good; mine easily outperforms
my netbooks' Atom 1.6 proccesor or any Pentium 4 up through
2.4 Ghz.

Only a few Puppies don't have a non-PAE version.

I've always used the regular network wizard without problem.

After I found a driver for wary 5.1.41 here in the forum.(http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=85220)
I installed wary 5.1.4.1 and installed the driver. At first, it just wouldn't detect the wifi device and I couldnt see the rtl8192cu in the modules list, but after a restart suddenly, there it was, "wlan0"

Finally.
I was already in the process of downloading slaco 5.5, but now it works and I am happy.
