Firmware for wireless cards that need it to run in Puppy

#1 Post by markst »

Hi All,

I have a Netgear WG511 (Taiwan) card. I could not get it to work in many linux distros properly. I also wanted to use linux driver over ndiswrapper in Puppy 2.10....but card wouldn't work.

After some chat with other users (BillStClair) I downloaded a pup file that Bill used to get his ipw2200 working. This pup creates the usr/lib/hotplug/firmware folder. I then downloaded the ARM file for my card from the prism54 website. I changed its name to isl3890 and dropped it into the above firmware file with the ipw2200 stuff. Then I loaded up the prism54 driver....ran WAG....and whala....it works!

Now if someone could add the isl3890 file to the pup package for the ipw2200....that particular pup could be expanded to also work for other cards such as PrismGT/Duette cards that use the intersil 3890. Maybe this method will work for other cards that require firmware loaded. It was much easier for a newbie like me to use the same script that Bill did...and just pop my file in than to figure out how to create all of the scripts myself.

Hope this helps someone else too!

Bill's pup file can be found here:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/puppy/ipw2200-fw-2.4.pup

And the firmware stuff can be downloade from the prism54.org site.

Take care,

Mark

There are approximately 10 Linux wifi drivers which require separate firmware files. Of these 10, only 5 drivers are currently available in Puppy.
Once all wifi drivers become available, I propose to package the firmware for all drivers which require it, probably as dotpups. See my post in "suggestions" http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?p=69635

I just have packaged the firmware and hotplug "extras" for the wifi drivers currently available in Puppy which need these add-ons, namely:

Atmel
HostAP (Prism2/2.5/3)
IPW2100
IPW2200
Prism54

These dotpups are at Mark's site http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Wifi/wifi-driver-firmware/
If/when additional wifi drivers become available in future Puppy releases, I will add the necessary firmware packages.
