New hardware with UEFI BIOS, older Puppy

#1 Post by tuxtoo »

My pentium 4 PC running Puppy-412 HD install finally died and had to go the recycling centre and I bought a barebones PC base unit with no OS to replace it. Set up the new box put the Puppy-412 CD in the drive, then ...

Code: Select all

Loading kernel drivers needed to access disk drives... done
Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives...
pup_412.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console...
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
#
Essentially, Puppy-412 was not seeing my drives. Later I was eventually able to boot from a USB memory drive but Puppy-412 was still unable to detect the internal drives (HD and DVD/CD). Using pmount or gparted were also unable to detect them.

The motherboard on the new box is an Asus P8H6-MX R2.0 dual core job with a 500gb HD and 4gbof RAM with the new style UEFI BIOS. This is where the solution to Puppy-412 not detecting the drives lay. So here is the UEFI BIOS settings to allow Puppy-412 and Puppy-431 to see the drives . . .

In the ‘Advanced’ section of the BIOS there is a menu called ‘SATA configuration’ selecting this and then from the sub-menu select ‘SATA mode selection’ which has three options; IDE (the default), AHCI and disabled.

Changing the ‘SATA mode selection’ from IDE to AHCI solved the problem and I now have access as normal on Puppy-412 to the HD and DVD/CD drive. Sorted!

This may help Puppy Users who want to run older versions of Puppy on newer hardware with the newer style UEFI BIOS.

There is still one problem remaining, no sound! which I have been unable to resolve (yet). The sound card is a VIA VT1708S. Alsa wizard is unable to detect any sound cards although I get sound on Wary-512 and on Wary’s Alsa Wizard the hardware shows as;

hda-intel - Intel Corporation 6 series chipset family high definition audio.

So if anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this I would be very grateful. I have tried various solutions from the forum to no avail. The soultion that I thought had promise is Alsa 1.0.22.1 Driver Updates but the file(s) I need are no longer available. I asked Mr Google if could find them but he was unable to help.

Finally, why is he running Puppy-412 on new hardwear when there is more suitable Puppies. Well, I am responsible for the 412collection.co.uk web site and it’s pretty important that I am able to use Puppy-412 for testing etc, and it just so happens that Puppy-412 is my favorite version of Puppy Linux.

Sound now working

#2 Post by tuxtoo »

This is a particular problem that may only affect a small selection of Puppy Users, but I will include it here anyway. This may also help many users who are unable to get any sound on their box.

The solution was to buy an 'External USB 3D 5.1 Channel PC Audio Sound Card' from ebay. This was a bit of a shot in the dark to get the sound working on my new box, fortunately, it worked and was a very inexpensive fix, the cost of the unit was a mere 1.50 (GB Pounds).

There are a large amount of sellers of this item in the UK and I expect they should be available from ebay in your part of the world. I have included a photo of the unit below for reference, although the do come in many different colours.

hey tuxtoo

I have one of these for an old ibm t21 laptop, puppy (slacko) found the sound card ok but the output quality was flat so I gave one of the usb cards a whirl and was pleasantly surprised but the improved sound quality

again for the price a useful bit of kit

I had to have a look at my motherboard's User Guide to confirm this but it appears that I don't have any HDMI connectors/sockets.

I too bought a server machine as a desktop replacement The USB sound card and USB wireless total was under $25.
Later buy was a video card with HDMI. So I can direct sound to two different places, at the same time, very handy.

Its like having two computer running, Playing multimedia on HDMI, while doing regular computer browsing or work, sometimes I forget and wonder why the cursor is on my TV...

If you can get your hands on a server machine, plan on needing a video card with HDMI to solve the two biggest drawbacks, video designed for text and static displays on the motherboard can not support the bandwidth even if the CPU's can decode video well in real time, and lack of sound.
They generally have top of the line Ethernet, mine had two ports, but no wireless.
