Xfce Desktop Optioins

#1 Post by HiDeHo »

Hi I am writing this post to let people know what options they have if they would like to try xfce desktop on there puppy version.

At this current time if you want xfce desktop you will need to download one of the following puppy versions.
  1. LighthousePUP: click here Lighthouse comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions. when you have the os setup you need to get the xfce addon.
  2. SalukiPUP: Saluki is not being maintained anymore but you can download it click here
  3. CarolinaPUP: click here this is a fork of Saluki which is being developed and is currently being maintained.
I am also wondering if there is currently available or any one is willing to do a version of xfce for any or the current standard/main versions of puppy eg Slacko, Precise Pup, or Wary/Racy.

The Saluki ISO's can be found here: http://smokey01.com/saluki/isos/

There is a Precise Xfce derivative here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=82177, although it is based on 5.4.3
X-slacko-5b1 - X-tahr-2.0 - X-precise-2.4

There are a couple of other xfce pups here:

RacyNOP 5.2.2
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=73728

and RacyNOP 5.3.2
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=81031

I've used them both and they're pretty good. (although the inbuilt opera needs the font tuning pet that is available somewhere...). No probs if you plan to use a different browser.

Akita also has Xfce 4.10, available in the repo, complete with Puppified menus, extra right click actions for Thunar and so on ...

If running Akita, you can install Xfce4 using the PPM, or even faster, in the terminal:

Code: Select all

pkg -g xfce4
It might be the only chance some users of old/crap PCs have of running Xfce4..
