If growisofs and dvd+rw-format are missing from your Puppy

#1 Post by musher0 »

Hello, all.

I noticed that, in some Puppies, growisofs and dvd+rw-format are missing.
I understand that DVDs are not as popular as they used to be, but still, a number of us find them essential.

BTW, this is not a criticism of anyone or anything. If you don't need these utilities, just move on to the next thread. If you do, well, here they are. This way, no feelings are hurt, and indeed people -- including Puppy packagers and developers -- are entitled to have a memory slip or two every once and a while.

With that out of the way:

growisofs is needed by PBurn. As to dvd+rw-format, it allows you to burn DVDs from the command line and completes the dvd+rw-mediainfo, etc., series of DVD utilities.
  • If your Pburn chokes trying to burn an iso to a DVD disc,
    or
if you cannot save Puppy sessions on a DVD disc,
this may be the reason: the executable "growisofs" may be missing.

I noticed that neither of the above utilities were in WheezyPup 3.5.2.x. I also reported elsewhere on this board, a year back, I think, that growisofs was missing in an earlier Puppy (I can't remember which one right now).

Which is why I'm posting here rather than in any particular Puppy thread.

The utilities were plucked off mandibule's Precise-5.4.2 "beryl" and they are presented here as a pet reproducing the proper Puppy hierarchy. Make sure they are missing in your Puppy before you download the pet.

The easiest way to check that you have them or not is: type
"which growisofs"*
and
"which dvd+rw-format":
the commands should return the location of the file. If you obtain no results,
then it's ok to download and install the attached pet, because "no result"
means that you do not have the file(s) in your Puppy.

If you prefer to compile these utilities yourself, the code is at:
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/tools/?M=D

I hope this helps.

Regards,

* Thanks to rcrsn51 for noticing the original "growiso" typo. I should have written "growisofs" all along, of course.

Using your check in Slacko 5.5, which dvd+rw-format shows that one present.
But growiso seems to be not found.
You only show the first PET.
So my question is where is the growiso PET?

The correct name is "growisofs" and it is definitely in Slacko 5.5.

Thanks rcrsn51 for noticing the typo. Initial post corrected.
My apologies to 8-bit and all other readers for any inconvenience.

Thank you rcrsn51 for the correct name!
I was not too worried as all applications that use growisofs worked correctly.
