PostPosted: Thu 11 Jul 2013, 00:29    Post subject:  RESOLVED Devx required to run virutalbox on precise 5.6.1?

Hello,

First I would like to say what a great linux OS, the thing just works! I waisted hours trying to get another distro to load on USB before this.

What a relief - very fast!

Full disclosure - I am pretty slow, so please excuse my ignorance of linux. (I was more of a XP person)

If I had known that linux was this useful I would have switched long before now. My last experience was trying an ancient distro in the mid 90s on a 486DX2. So it was a bit of a shock to see how things have moved on.

To be honest I nearly rage quit Evil or Very Mad after all the problems I had with the other distro, it seemed all the problems I had seen from my first time were still there (bloated, broken, difficult to use - just a massive productivity black hole.) but luckily I noticed a review of Precise Puppy and I figured well its less than 170meg whats the harm.

BOOM! I just sat there dumbfounded, the thing installed and ready to use in a fraction of the time I had expected (I had gone off to get lunch, coffee expecting it to still be building the usb..)

Shocked I figured something had gone wrong, it couldn't have been that fast... expecting the worst I booted my PC and to my surprise it worked!

I spent the next day or so installing my programs (impressive most are available.) Cool

What I want to do is run a virtualbox with a instance of DSL with LAMP, and possibly XP later.

What I want to do is practice socket programming with python.

Python libraries were a breeze, much easier to setup than what I am used to on XP. Razz I thought something was wrong it just worked. lol.

but then I came to install the package binaries for virtual box and there was an error it said it couldn't locate a library, usually the PPM is quite good at finding all the dependency but in this case it seems to have fallen over.

Is there a way I need to install virtual box? base, ect...? I noticed there were a number of different versions.

How can I install virtualbox on Precise Puppy 5.6.1?

I checked the forum and I found this.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=21617

But as its from 2007, I wondered if it was still good for the later versions.

Do I need to install Devx? Before I can do this?

Also It took some time to install my programs (I am on a very slow connection.)

Do i need to download everything again if i install the devx for 5.6.1?

Confused

Ok, I have 1gb ram, 3tb of HD space. its a dual core 64bit system. its main OS is XP sp2. however at the moment its booting from the usb drive just fine and running puppy.

(going to increase the ram to 3gb to help do my virtualbox projects.)

Precise puppy 5.6.1 is on a 16gb USB2 drive.

Well in the end i figured out what the sfs files did by myself,

Installed and mounted.

Didnt solve my problems with virtual box. however now i can compile code woohoo.

so now I have all of my applications set up how i want expect for

VIRTUALBOX!!!

Crying or Very sad

Still cant get virtual box to load.

I have tried the base binary install from packages.

I have tried a sfs file (virtualbox-4.0.0-lucid.sfs) no dice.

tried 3.2.14 64 bit pet file... its not working.

what package do i need to run in precise puppy 5.6.1 to get virtual box - any virtual box working please.

any help would be great - I just want to get it working so I can do my work.

thanks.

Hello Wibble- is the devx loaded? What happens when you run VB from a shell?

Sorry I was editing the post when you replied.

yes the devx loaded without any errors and seems to be working great.

let me past in the output from the virtualbox..

Code:

# vboxwebsrv
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module
available for the current kernel (3.2.44) or it failed to
load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by

sudo /ect/init.d/vboxdrv setup

you will not be able to start VMs untill this problem is fixed.
/usr/bin/vboxwebsrv: line 100: /opt/VirtualBox/vboxwebsrv : cannot exectue binary file

Did you initially install VB via PPM? Have you tried either of these?

Is there an error if you: modprobe vboxdrv

You're on a 64bit box?

Yes I tried with PPM,

My processor is 2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8300 @ 2.83Ghz

its a bit long in the tooth but it does everything i need.

I looked at this page first but I saw that my kernel was not supported

[code]
# uname -r
3.2.44

So i downloaded the sfs file.

I think I tried the vboxdrv-4.2.12-amd64_DEV.pet

instead of the

virtualbox-4.2.12_NLS.pet

I will try ^^^ now. Sorry my brain is slow I don't recall if i tried this one.

I am guessing this will work with the kernel?

I figure I am doing something stupid and missing a obvious step sorry.

Take your time and don't sweat the incidentals. I'll need to familiarize myself..

According to this post, it may work.

What I don't know is if there's been a kernel change since Precise 5.4?

Still, I'd try Shinobar's pkg first..

Thanks, I am just glad its only a small issue like this.

I was expecting there to be many setup problems. *touch wood
if this is the only problem then its a blessing. haha.

The hours of work that must have gone into making this distro so stable is mind blowing. The machine is rock solid and just works. I never thought I would say that of a Linux OS. Cool

Its a good way to learn more about the system. At least things are planned in a way that its easy to investigate and mess with the distro - I like that very much.

Oh it's flexible, forgiving and lets you play developer- BIG plus for us weekend warriors. If you get Shinobar's to load, great! If you get another missing module message, you'll probably have to load this src pkg as well. It's 'puppy' >> 'linux' Wink to get in..

Make sure'n peruse these README's..

Agreed its a great tool to learn, am downloading the file now cheers.

Thanks for your help.

I now have

virtualbox-4.2.12-NLS.pet
virtualbdrv-4.2.12-amd64_DEV.pet
virtualbox-4.2.12-amd64_BASE.pet

You are right I need the kernel sources to get this to work, evidently there was an update.

On the other hand I wanted to learn how to do a source compile/build of puppy so its a start in the right direction.

(CONFIG_LOGO will be set haha I will have my fancy splash screen on boot.) Laughing but thats for another day.

More love letters from the terminal..

Hello wibble

Welcome to the kennels.

It appears to me like you have tried just about everything except the correct package.

Now that you have both your devx and kernel-sources sorted out,
personally i would suggest that you try this package:

in the past i have normally used that method successfully.

Hope this helps

Hi guys - I downloaded the pet,

VirtualBox shows up in the menu, however it seems to be giving the silent treatment.

when i try in the terminal i get this

Code:

# VirtualBox
/usr/bin/VirtualBox: line 83: /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox: cannot execute binary file
/usr/bin/VirtualBox: line 83: /opt/VirtualBox/VirtualBox: Success

Shocked

I am guessing there is a package conflict?

should i install everything and just download the PET file?

on another unrelated point.

tested my chepo no-brand wireless usb stick...

I was sure it was going to die, but to my surprise. it auto detected and functioned perfectly.

If you had told me that last week I would have laughed you out of the building. Razz

That is seriously impressive, I still cannot believe it. I don't care how much irritation the virtualbox issue gives me, this distro is excellent. Very Happy

Its a shame more people don't know just how useful and easy to use puppy is. Once I get the virtualbox up and running I will be able to almost every task (bar using photoshop but thats no big deal I can always boot into XP for that.

Hello wibble

Please forgive me as i have made a serious blunder. Embarassed

Recently i have been messing around with various 64bit Puppies,
and when i saw you mention you had a 64bit machine i completely lost the plot
and forgot that you are using precise which is most definitely NOT a 64bit OS.

So, the package i should have linked to is this one: virtualbox-4.2.12-x86_src.install.pet
i tested it myself in Precise-5.6.1 and it does work. (see pics)

Very sorry for giving the wrong link, it won't happen again (i hope Rolling Eyes )
consider this pussycat severely spanked Laughing

Regarding your comment:

i reckon it would be best if you did start afresh mate, just to be on the safe side.
