Mr. Smith, is there a swap partition on your hard disk? 256 MB of RAM probably isn't enough to run Puppy and do much else, such as extract large files, unless you have a swap partition. 500 MB ought to do the trick. Better yet, add more RAM if you can.

Oscar was right. SlimBoat's over- delete it all and try QtWeb.

QTWeb crashes....Firedog 3.6 runs pretty well on it. My laptop can't support more memory than 256MB. It's an HP Pavilion N3402. Thanks for your time. I'd like to install uzbl to see how that runs on it.

I tried the latest version of QTWeb. It's crashed two times in five minutes.

Plus deps is a tall order.. Have you given antiX or TinyCore a spin? Low reqs & lots of 'current' software choices..

No, but it'll have to wait until I get some blank CDs. antiX looks nice.

Is 421 installed to this hd or frugal with a save file?

Like Flash mentioned, you probably need swap..

It's frugal with a save file. I tried using Wary 5.5, but it doesn't run as good as 421. I have a swap file of 256MB set up. I don't think I can increase it without deleting my Windows Millenium partition. Opera 10.10 runs well on it. It never crashes; it's just not as fast and responsive as I would like it to be, but since my laptop is so old, I don't think I can expect much more from it. It's just fun to work on in my spare time. I might just get rid of Windows ME and go from there. I can always re-install it if I feel like it.

Fair enough. Sounds like a manageable setup and one that should see you through. Good luck with it.

A swap file is not the same as a swap partition. Puppy will automatically find and use a swap partition if there is one, but has to be taught how to use a swap file.
