Hello sc0ttman,
First thanks for highlighting the game numptyphysics as I'd hadn't come across that one. Xrick and dosbox are already in Gamer.

Also thanks you for the list of games and where to download them. A number are already in Gamer. I agree pipepanic can be addictive!

I see a number of titles I'd love to include but can't.

The underlying fact is any included games MUST RUN ON PENTIUM III computers with no special Graphic Card Drivers. If it isn't playable it isn't included.

John, it looks like Legacy 2.1 is already at the 1 CD limit with the games and software it already has. If it's going to get any bigger with all these additional games, would a 2 CD installation be viable?

That way, you could also add back the software to the distro that you had to cull from it to fit it onto a single CD in the first place.
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.

John,..
Hate to change the subject from the Legacy "Gamer",
but I'm still using the old original LegacyOS (2010) with updated Opera (on my older PIII).

I want to put it on my main computer (P4), but I have a widescreen (1366x768). The old Legacy doesn't seem to go that high. Is there any way to change the resolution to 1366x768,....or do I need to just keep it on my old box--and forget about the widescreen P4?

(again,..I'm sorry to change the subject from the "Gamer")
I'd LOVE to get the Legacy Gamer,...but I'm still stuck with this dialup (and can't go the time it would take to download).
Maybe when I visit my daughter soon --as she has that nice high speed thingy.

Hello nitehawk,
As I don't own a monitor like you have and always use 4:3 monitors I haven't done much experimenting with xorg. I know there's a hack which other forum members would know. As the target user will most likely be using an older monitor with Legacy I saw no need to support newer monitors.

Any forum members with knowledge in this area who want to share please do so as I'll include the information in the next release.

Thanks for the reply, John.
I'll just keep it on my secondary computer (my Dell PIII). It's working just great on there,...and I do use that old computer a LOT. LegacyOS has given it new life,..and makes it think it's a new computer, or something

Hi John:
I am having in trouble to boot the Legacy OS. tried the Legacy OS 2 as well as Legacy OS 2.1. I want to install it in P-III (1 Ghz Processor, 512 MB RAM and 20 GB HDD). When ever I tried to boot these puppies it tale too much time to load at copyin file to tmpfs or something like that. I think it may be due to 5120 MB ram as the ISO is too big. After that boot false with the Error Kernal panic... etc. I really dont have any idea? I tried it on 03 different PCs. Having the same problem. Please help me in the following matter.
1. How to install Legacy OS 2.1 using frugal method? (I tried windows unetbootin) but having the same above problem) also wat will be the entry in grub menu.lst ?
2. For full installation, Is it possible to install Legacy without burning the ISO ?
thnx in advance.

remove some ram

#28 Post by oligin10 »

Hi umair, here is John's suggestion he has given to others. Uninstall some ram. You need to have 256 mb is what he suggests, I think. I'm sure John will see this and correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck. Thanks, Rob

Rob
Thnx for the info. I remember that I installed Legacy OS 2 successfully with 512 MB RAM. heres the link http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 69&t=70151
Anyhow I will set 256 MB RAM in my PC. Can u tell me that decreasing the RAM will work with Unitbootin ? As I have a doubt on my CD ROM Drive that its not working properly.

256 MB Ram

#30 Post by oligin10 »

Hi umair, this is what he recommended IIRC. Make sure computer has 256 mb of ram, then do full install (or frual). After you have done that reboot and make sure it is working. Then shut down again and reinstall the ram, then reboot with the full 512 mb of ram. Thanks, Rob

My wifi adapter it not supported, is there any way to fix it?

This OS runs much faster than Slacko or Precise and still has the fancy stuff on it. The paint app is not a pain in the a**. A great selection of games. Duke Nukem 3D is my favourite. It's been 2 days I've installed this and I already like it enough to suggest a friend to install it on his old computer.

Another thing, your website says 2 other versions of Legacy are coming in 2013 but the year is almost over. Can we have a more accurate date? I was very much looking forward to it.

Hello Usman55,
I had planned to release 2 more Legacy OS versions this year. My full time job work load has increased substantially. Family commitments has left very little time to work on Legacy. While one of the 2 planned releases is close to being released sadly problems has arisen with the other which means it isn't suitable for release.
As Legacy OS 2.1 Gamer was developed for someone to set up an old PC to play games on, WiFi support isn't and won't be supported in the future.

Any future Legacy OS Series 2 releases will also not include support for most WiFi adapters, Sorry!

Hello cthisbear,
You've been a big supporter of Legacy OS and it's appreciated!

While it would be great to assemble a team of talented programmers to work on Legacy OS in reality I don't think it would happen.

OK if any programmer wants to prove me wrong please reply to post.

Personally I love the 2 series of puppy on which Legacy OS 2 is based. What would be interesting to see is what Kernel version later than 2.6.18.1 could be shoe horned in to Legacy and still run with it current system files. Newer kernels bring better support for WiFi etc. Normally when you update a kernel glibc is also updated.
If anyone wants to run an kernel experiment with Legacy OS 2 and has success please let me know. If it is stable I'd be happy to include in future releases. :D

Hello Usman55,
I have had limited success with some early Wifi cards. If your trying to log on to Wifi requiring a password even if your card is recognized your Wifi card won't connect. I have only had success with full open Wifi networks.
Have you run the Network wizard and tried manually insert wifi drivers and testing. What have you done to connect to Wifi? What steps did you take?

When wlan was not an option at the main screen of the wizard, I tried choosing a Windows driver by inserting my driver disc and choosing the .inf files. But I got an empty msg box instead. I tried the "choose automatically" option from the list of drivers and it did select a driver but the wifi option again didn't show up.

Not Likely

#39 Post by oligin10 »

Hi Usman55, doesn't look good. A quick search showed this is by Ralink Technology with 3 possible drivers and not likely to be able to get to work with this kernel. Sorry, Rob

Hello oligin10,
Thanks for taking the time to search for info. As you stated Legacy OS 2's kernel may be to old to support Usman55's Wifi adaptor.
One of the reasons Legacy OS runs faster is because of its 6 to 7 year old system base, it still thinks it's 2000 to 2007. Because of this, older PC's and Laptops become usable again because to Legacy their not old. Once we start to update this and that over time Legacy would slowdown and become less usable on the very hardware it was intended for.

With this in mind every effort is taken to still make Legacy usable in the real world. For example Legacy OS 2.1 Gamer contains Opera 12.02 (Replacing Opera 10) the last Web browser Version update that will every run on the Legacy OS 2 series. This browser is HTML5 compatible. A user can Facebook, watch Youtube and do most of what the average user would do online. Which is pretty good if you're running a Pentium III PC which originally came with Windows 98 SE. One of my main PC's is a 698Mhz Pentium III used for testing and daily use. No other Linux OS comes close to making this PC as usable as it is with Legacy OS 2 on it.

If giving users support for later Hardware makes Legacy OS unusable on the very Hardware it was designed for then what would be the point of Legacy OS?
