Better menu management for LxPup by SFS

#41 Post by peebee »

28-jul-2013
All pets have been updated (see the individual posts) to have better menu management in that all menu items in the base pup are now found and included in the LxPup by SFS menus.

New lxpupsetup pet versions are:
1.4-s for Slacko and Upup-Precise
1.4-u for Precise Puppy **
1.5-r for Upup-Raring

** Precise Puppy 5.7 is supported by the B.5.5.3 version sfs plus the 1.4-u version pet

Cheers

Precise 5.7.1

#42 Post by simes »

Hi Peter, I installed Precise Puppy 5.7.1 this afternoon and before creating a save file for the first time, loaded your SFS and installed the PET. All works fine, first time, so thank you again. One question, however; in the menu structure accessed from the 'start' button, most entries have submenus with the same name; e.g. the Desktop menu has a 'Desktop' submenu, and the entries are split between the higher level Desktop menu and the Desktop submenu. Same for System, Utility, Personal, Network, and Internet, but not others. I would willingly edit the menu structure myself if I could see how. Can you give me any hints, please?

Hi Simes

I'll admit the menu structure is a bit odd but in my defence I thought it would be better to have all the underlying Pup menu items in the LxPup menu rather than have some missing which was the case previously.

You can find the menu definitions at /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu

I created this automagically from the Pup menus with this script:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#lxpup by sfs menu creator 27-07-13

cd /etc/xdg/menus
rm lxpup.menu
cat puppy-desktop.menu puppy-system.menu puppy-setup.menu puppy-utility.menu puppy-filesystem.menu puppy-graphic.menu puppy-document.menu puppy-business.menu puppy-personal.menu puppy-network.menu puppy-internet.menu puppy-multimedia.menu puppy-fun.menu > tmp1

sed -e '/?xml/ d' -e '/!DOCTYPE/ d' -e '/DefaultAppDirs/ d' -e '/DefaultDirectoryDirs/ d' -e 's/>Business</>Calculate</' -e 's/>Puppy-Desktop.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Desktop.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-System.directory</>Mate-Puppy-System.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Setup.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Setup.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Utility.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Utility.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Filesystem.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Filesystem.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Graphic.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Graphic.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Document.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Document.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Business.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Business.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Personal.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Personal.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Network.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Network.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Internet.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Internet.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Multimedia.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Multimedia.directory</' -e 's/>Puppy-Fun.directory</>Mate-Puppy-Fun.directory</' tmp1 > tmp2
rm tmp1
head -n 32 lxde-applications.menu > tmp1
tail -n 8 lxde-applications.menu > tmp3
cat tmp1 tmp2 tmp3 > lxpup-applications.menu
rm tmp1 tmp2 tmp3

exit
and then renamed the result - it maybe needs a tweak....

Let me know if you discover a better menu definition.

Cheers

Compiz add-on

#45 Post by peebee »

LxPup-by-SFS does not add any extra bling to what is available in the underlying Puppy other than the Elementary icon set.

01micko asked me to have a go at putting Compiz on top of LxPup-by-SFS for Slacko - the result can be found at:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 580#721580

New versions 28 Aug 2013

#46 Post by peebee »

New versions of LxPup by SFS are now available in the next 3 posts.

Main changes are:

pcmanfm is now version 1.1.2

pup-volume-monitor is now version 0.1.15

Openbox Configuration Manager is now included

Lxlauncher is now included - this is intended for netbooks with small screens - to try it type lx into the run menu and then select and run lxlauncher - if you want it to be permanent then you will need to add a script to Startup. See screenie.

The Desktop menu has been "tidied" to remove any non-LXDE items

Various small other tidies including a new numbering scheme for the sfs/pets

LxPup by SFS for Slacko, Precise and Upup-Raring

#50 Post by Billtoo »

I didn't want to start with a fresh frugal install so I backed up my
current slacko save file and loaded the lxde.sfs, I got some strange
results :)
At first I thought it was jwm running because I saw no sign of lxde,
then I discovered lxde was hidden behind the jwm panel so I moved that
panel to the top of the screen.
I'm running both window managers at once, the lxde menu works but the
jwm menu works too, right clicks bring up the jwm menu.
Very interesting :)

Hi Billtoo

Sounds like you've probably not followed the installation instructions in post #1??

Backing up your savefile should be safe of course....

But you do need to load both the sfs and the pet and then change wm's with xwin startlxde at the console to get the full experience.

Which file manager were you seeing? If you hadn't installed the pet it would be rox I think...

But then how did you start lxde????

You have me confused!!

Cheers

I just loaded the sfs, I missed pet.
I loaded the sfs and exited to the prompt, and then entered startx lxde.

I like this setup, I think I'll keep using it the way it is even though I screwed up and didn't follow the instructions, it's kind of cool :)

Thanks for trying the "official way" ;-)

The pet does a bit of useful configuration and setup to complement the basic components in the sfs so the combination of the both is recommended.

BTW - do not try to upgrade the base Puppy to a later version without reverting to JWM and uninstalling both pet and sfs first!!

Black screen

#56 Post by Volhout »

Hi PeeBee,

Not sure if this is a Slacko issue, or compiz/lxde. When I installed as described Slacko frugal went well. But after sfs es and pet and reboot my desktop was black. I tried installin video driver (nVidia 7200) and the control panel suggested a driver, but that driver was not present in any of the mirrors.

Then I looked at the puppy slacko14 repo, and there it was. But
It would not install. So i am still looking at a black desktop.

Any help ?

Hi Volhout

Sounds like an nvidia driver problem with Compiz.....

Have you tried LxPup-by-SFS on it's own without Compiz? Does that work?

Have you checked which version of the nvidia driver your card needs? I suspect the 7200 maybe needs the 304.88 driver.

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Then you need to get the correct version of the driver for your kernel - which kernel is your Slacko?

nVidia

#58 Post by Volhout »

Hi Peebee,

I installed Slacko 5.6 4G on my laptop with Intel Pentium M.
Did not try LXDE alone, simply went for the whole thing.
Will do some experimenting tonight. It was very late last night, so I typed the post this morning between coffee and bread, and went off to work.

The control panel, under "VGA driver" suggested the "legacy 173.xx....." nVidia driver. And that is the one I took from the repo. I can try to experiment with the other drivers. Maybe it is simply that the driver that was suggested by the control panel was the wrong one. In that case it is a Slacko issue, that the Pupcontrol was not updated with the kernel change.

There is a legacy_304..........3.4.52-4g, and a old_173.......3.4.52_4g, but not a legacy_173.........3.4.52-4g.....

I'll keep you informed how it goes...

New versions 02

#59 Post by peebee »

8-sep-13

New versions have been uploaded.

These have come about after discsussions with radky - many thanks to him.

They tidy up compatibility between lxpanelx and lxpanel so that PupClockSet will work.

The LXDE LxAppearance module has been removed (as it didn't work properly) and replaced by a substitute - there is now just one menu item under Desktop - "Change appearance" which then leads to desktop, windows, theme, panel, icons and cursor changers.

N.B. because of the changes to lxpanelx, if you have customised your panel in any way it may not survive an update - suggest you uninstall all existing LxPup-by-SFS components and delete any lxpanel or lxpanelx folders to be found in root/.config or in /usr/share before reinstalling the new version. You will need to reinstate your customisations afterwards.

Cheers

Eye-candy

#60 Post by peebee »

I've been playing around with using the new "Change appearance" tools to change the appearance of LxPup-by-SFS.

I've created a repository to hold various themes and icons -

LxPup-by-SFS Eye-Candy Repository

Read the README file for a description of whats in the repository and how to install and activate the items.

Some themes on some Puppies may not show as available when loaded - a pet of the gtk-engine-murrine is available in the repository to try to fix this. (not needed for Upup-Raring).

Any suggestions for things to add to the repository are welcomed.

As examples see the attached reskin screenies (comments indicate the components used).

The setup pets now include an amended appearance tool with a button to access the repository and have been reuploaded.

Cheers
