Skype 4.2.0.13 Subject description: Standalone Versions - NO NEED TO INSTALL QT |
|
WARNING
AS FROM THE BEGINNING OF AUGUST 2014 THESE PACKAGES AND ALL OTHER EARLIER SKYPE FOR LINUX VERSIONS MAY NOT WORK.
Skype is owned by Microsoft and they have changed the core system. You will probably find that you can't log in any more. They have released a new Skype for Linux but it is compiled without alsa support and needs pulseaudio for the sound. Puppy does not have pulseaudio. Some members of the Puppy community are looking at workarounds for this. See here:-
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=94807
Otherwise I suggest that people complain to the Microsoft / Skype developers and request that they release a version with alsa enabled.
Another good suggestion is to tell everybody to use a SIP softphone such as Linphone for communication over internet instead.
I took various different builds from the Skype website and combined them with the most suitable dependency libraries to create these experimental "standalone" versions which should be optimized for various different Puppies. The libs are placed in a private directory to avoid clashes and conflicts. Tested and all seem good here but no warranty. Uploaded for testing and comments, take the usual precautions if installing.
UPDATE:-
Version 4.2.0.13 is now out so I made some packages along the same lines.
They are here:-
http://smokey01.com/OscarTalks
Read below for descriptions of the mixtures of Skype versions and dependency libraries.
Debian Wheezy Skype with official Debian Wheezy libs.
Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) Skype with official Ubuntu Lucid libs. I note that the Skype website specifies Qt 4.7 whereas these are 4.6.2 but maybe this is OK for the Lucid build.
Dynamic Linux Skype with Pemasu's Exprimo libs.
Ubuntu Precise (12.04) Skype with Pemasu's Precise libs.
Dynamic Linux Skype with 01micko's Slacko 14.0 libs.
Same as Exprimo but with added Debian Squeeze libstdc++ private upgrade. I named it as "Racy", works in Racy 5.5 out of the box and also in Wary 5.5 if you install D-Bus from PPM (and reboot).

Tried the experimo files on Precise Pup and so far (*knock on wood*) it has proven to be stable and I even got Skype Call Recorder to detect it! Thank you so much.

Hi Oscar; DataFileHost.com has a usless url also. Can we get your stuff uploaded elsewhere?
Ally ( I think he`s in the U.S.) has a site, and there`s Smokey in the land down under.

Thanks Oscar. I used this one successfully on Pemasus Upup Raring 3.9.9.2.
I suspect it may not have been the best choice for Upup, but it worked. (I have previously been using skype 2 and it was great for audio but patchy for video. The skype4 sfs was better on video but seemed 'half duplex' for audio - I had to be careful when I was speaking or else the audio from the remote party faded out, which I did not experience previously on Skype2. Maybe just different prioritisation of audio and video between skype 2 and skype 4?). It was nice to use an sfs and know that it was only temporarily grafted into the operating system rather than more permanently like a .pet. Makes it a very easy way to trial things. I might trial some of the other versions you posted and see if I find any difference in quality...
EDIT...BTW - it's great that you included the QT stuff so that the user doesn't have to hunt for it. Nice! (and of course, when you unload the sfs the Qt portions go with it - so nothing left behind.). I like it.

sunburnt,
The original idea was to phase out DataFileHost and use Yandex Disk instead, but I am on the lookout for other options. Tried a couple of free host sites but neither seemed to work at all which was frustrating. Might give e-nautia a try if you think it is OK but some of these sites have daily usage limitations and stuff like that.
Meantime maybe we can ask ally to upload a copy of any package that interests you. I do speak to Smokey now and again but am reluctant to ask for space in my name. I am not sure how much capacity he has available and also I consider myself more of a student and experimenter than a "dev". Maybe we could ask him to upload a few packages to his public smokey01.com/menu area if you think it will help.
greengeek,
I believe the Precise version is OK in Upup Raring.
The "ducking" of incoming audio when you speak is probably an effect of the echo-cancellation / voice-activation mechanism. Really they should have an option to enable / disable that feature as it is not needed if you are wearing headphones, but is important for those people who try to use Skype via the speakers.

Take a look at this: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88264 & this as an example...

koulaxizis,
Thanks for the suggestion. I signed up via your referral link and have uploaded some packages including the Skype ones so people can give it a try.
This is the link:-

sunburnt,
The download links for the packages remain unscrambled I think, although they are https and not http
I am able to download with wget using
Code: | wget --no-check-certificate |
but you will need to tell me if this copy.com system is suitable for what you want to do or not.

Hi guys; My main thought here is to have at least a few world wide mirror sites for Puppy.
It`s far better to have a few "well posted" sites than everybody have dozens of their own.
# AND... New generations of Puppies will be able to use these sites for PPM repositories.
The PPMs could get package info from the sites and produce a list of pkgs. and types.
Smokey`s down under, and Ally`s in the U.S. ( I think...), and MU`s in Germany ( if still there...).
This would cover most of the world`s main continents.
Only Asia and South America left. But Germany and Australia are very close.
Oscar; The Copy site links look good. I`ll make some tests and let you know.
Suggestion: I think putting SFS and PET packages in separate dirs. would be good. Your call...
