file, v. 5.14, out Sept. 24, 2013

Hello!

Just a word to let you know that version 5.15 of the file guesser "file" was
published two days ago. Ref.: http://www.darwinsys.com/file/

This small but essential utility helps all Unix-type systems recognize file
types, from PCM to GameBoy to old Atari files, to elf programs and bash
scripts, etc., etc., not to mention the obvious txt, doc and gnumeric file types.

The version of file on my wary 5.5 was 5.03, dated May 2009. Attached is
an excerpt of the ChangeLog since then, 12.4 Kb long.

Precaution: make a copy of your "file" file in /usr/bin before installing this
pet. The upgrade worked absolutely without a glitch for me, but better be
safe than sorry.

You don't need this if you never touch or process exotic files, but then
again, this might be just the ticket you need...

Please download from http://limelinx.com/fjpq6.
Compiled this day on a wary 5.5 Puppy.

Warning: someone must download this file at least once every 59 days
to keep it active on the limelinx support! :) Any volunteers? :)
Otherwise, tough! :) You'll have to ask me to re-upload. :)

Enjoy!

I'm actually writing my own `file` implementation (currently only the mime-type portion) ... nothing wrong with the gnu version. I just needed something faster and permissively licensed. ... apparently your new version thinks .deb files are "application/octet-stream"
Check out my github repositories. I may eventually get around to updating my blogspot.

"thinks .deb files are "application/octet-stream" The 'file' sources usually need a pile of patches to include file types.

Thanks for spreading the word, but there's no need to jam the waveband.
One can use buildpet:http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=81056
It has a build script for "file". Just correct the version number and you're good to go. It will download the source, compile it and build a pet for you. I've had mine in less than 3 minutes.

Hi, Anikin.

Thanks for the info.

I'll re-study Tman's script.
At first glance his build scripts seemed to disable some functions of the programs, such as potential localisation.
But, as I said, I'll take another look at it.

BFN.
