PostPosted: Sun 30 Jun 2013, 18:44    Post subject: Acer Desktop Windows Vista
Subject description: Mutiple popup windows freezing Desktop

Woke up this morning and the first thing before coffee. The wife starts telling me.
"My Computer is broken. Where did you put the restore dvds?"

Sighing. I say,"Wait a second. I'll take a look see." Rolling Eyes

She is pushing keyboard buttons and being a control freak. But getting no where fast.
I move into the chair. Sure enough there a a Hundred pop up windows saying

"can't find so and so ram error". The Desktop is frozen. I be not fully awake amble over to the coffee machine and pour a cup and think. Then I remember this thread, just the title.

Anyhows. I boot Macpup 529. I mount the vista files and go into programs and program libs.
I delete some folders and some files in folders.
ramfreer
arcsoft
mcafee

Cross my fingers and reboot. Boom. Everything boots up faster and is right with the world again.

I download revo and proceed to remove some old java installs and cleaning up what I left behind on the puppy linux
cleanup. Vista is actually snappy now.

Now to slow it back down with a Avast install. Reboot. Scan. Delete old restore point. Make a new restore point (I could not even get into system restore earlier).

While doing all of this. I found listening to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy4FXhkm6Nw

was quit soothing. Macpup 529 rules.

What to do when Windows Explorer doesn't refresh>

Another Whirlie forum discussion I saw.

Mind you I use Explorer Lite so I don't see this.

http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm

" All the shell goodies from windows explorer —
none of the hassle!
The free lightweight version of xplorer² offers dual panes and
folder tabs for efficient and trouble-free desktop file management. "

::::::::::

Strange Windows 7 Problem

" Basically, if I delete (or rename) a file in a folder, the deletion
(or renaming) doesn't *appear* to occur.

Although the file *has* been deleted/renamed, its not apparent.

It looks as if nothing has happened and that I need to try again –
to little avail because the file is no longer available. "

I have to close and reopen folder to see that the desired action has taken place, and wonder why something like that might be occurring.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2138925

elmar01 states >>>

" This is the famous explorer refresh bug, they fixed it (I think)
in Windows 8."

and links below to

" Explorer refresh horror solved! 12 solutions (and workarounds)
for a 5-year-old Windows Explorer bug "

Maybe one to try >> encryption with a difference.

Plenty of free Office compatible suites as well on the site.

" SSuite Picsel secures all your text messages using Steganography encryption..."

" This application uses steganography, an unbreakable encryption method using only images as your key; no password necessary. "

Australian Federal Police virus >> removal instructions.

By booting Hitman Pro via USB.

Whirlpool forum posts again.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2025966&p=18

Knuutr "Yes, this is a large posting and it continues as bad guys
keep spreading the virus.
I agree it is a persistent threat, it evolves and it blocks safe mode, command prompt now, but I don't
think it is impossible to remove it completely. "

" Products like malwarebytes, hitman and others do clean your PC completely. For those in need detailed instruction can be found here.

Hitman software mentioned above is free for 1 scan and can be used as trial and uninstalled once virus is removed.
It is not a must to pay your local computer repair man, you can do it yourself. "

"""""""

Instructions.

" You should press 1 as your choice.
Doing so will be followed by Windows starting to load.

• Right after Windows launches, the counterfeit Australian Federal
Police block screen will appear as it did before,
however in 15-20 seconds the HitmanPro main console will pop up
on top of that. "

System Restore could cause issues in Windows 8 if not updated.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/system_restore_could_cause_issues_in_windows_8_if_not_updated.html

" Need to do a restore on Windows 8? It has a feature called “push-button reset” that acts just like previous versions of Windows system restore.

However, if you didn't download the latest updates to your system, you could end up with a brick if you try to do a restore. "

Been playing with windows 7 recently.
Got a new old machine with it on but wanted to repartition.
I copied the install to elsewhere and sure enough it failed to boot somewhere along the line.
Did get to grips with that and copied it back to another drive and its booting and running just fine.

Only problem I created was that the winsxs folder has all the system files and more and much use is made of hard links...of course my 'clone' did not respect that so now I have 2 copies of a hell of a lot of files. There seems to be a bat file around to sort this out and in doing so save oodles of space but not to keen to try it.

Fun and games but one point... such methods will most likely mess up the BCD for booting... only way I found to fix it if you dont have a recovery disk was using easyBCD run in XP...works every time. There appear to be no workable tools in linux to do this. Its actually neater than using a recovery disk anyway ...not a console in sight Smile

Just thought I'd join in

" easyBCD. "

Yes...often heard it mentioned.

""""""

I'm sure Hirens and Falcon boot cds can fix that.

Of course some evil people would try

Windows Tiny7 Rev01 Unattended Activated CD

by eXPerience....to keep the file size down.

Just about fits on a cd...Depends on your cd type.
ahem! so I'm told.

in spite of a vast inventory hirens did not have something to do the job.

The method i used in the end was a usb bootable XP and easyBCD.
Thats also handy since you can edit registry hives if for example you need to enable AHCI.

How to Update Windows XP After End of Support.

Thanks >>> bark_bark_bark for alerting me to this.

" A trick published on a German forum claims that tweaking Windows XP
in order to be identified by the Windows Update service as Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 could do the trick and help everyone that’s
yet to upgrade to keep their computers fully protected. "

Chrome browser has been DRAINING PC batteries for YEARS.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/07/19/chrome_power_sucking_bug/

" Instead of waking up the processor every 15.625ms,
Chrome tells Windows to have it wake up every 1.000ms.

So while your PC normally wakes up the processor 64 times per second
when it's idle, as long as you have Chrome running, the processor wakes
up 1,000 times per second. "
