I did nothing clever in compiling Wine, I just followed the instructions/examples of others. Thanks go to them for providing the information, files, and work.
This post will point to new wine versions as I compile them.

For a basic wine setup, I recommend the latest stable release.
If the windows software you are trying to use is not functioning as it should (using stable release), then I recommend the latest development release.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

stable:

1.2 | 1.2.1 | 1.2.2 | 1.2.3 | 1.4 | 1.4.1 | 1.6 | 1.6.1 | 1.6.2

development:

1.1.41 | 1.1.42 | 1.1.43 | 1.1.44 | 1.2-rc1 | 1.2-rc2 | 1.2-rc3 | 1.2-rc4 | 1.2-rc5 | 1.2-rc6 | 1.2-rc7 | 1.3.0 | 1.3.1 | 1.3.2 | 1.3.3 | 1.3.4 | 1.3.5 | 1.3.6 | 1.3.7 | 1.3.8 | 1.3.9 | 1.3.10 | 1.3.13 | 1.3.14 | 1.3.16 | 1.3.17 | 1.3.19 | 1.3.20 | 1.3.21 | 1.3.22 | 1.3.23 | 1.3.24 | 1.3.25 | 1.3.26 | 1.3.27 | 1.3.28 | 1.3.29 | 1.3.30 | 1.3.31 | 1.3.32 | 1.3.33 | 1.3.34 | 1.3.35 | 1.3.36 | 1.3.37 | 1.4-rc4 | 1.4-rc5 | 1.4 | 1.5.0 | 1.5.1 | 1.5.2 | 1.5.3 | 1.5.4 | 1.5.5 | 1.5.6 | 1.5.7 | 1.5.8 | 1.5.9 | 1.5.10 | 1.5.11 | 1.5.12 | 1.5.13 | 1.5.14 | 1.5.15 | 1.5.16 | 1.5.17 | 1.5.18 | 1.5.19 | 1.5.20 | 1.5.21 | 1.5.22 | 1.5.23 | 1.5.24 | 1.5.25 | 1.5.26 | 1.5.27 | 1.5.28 | 1.5.29 | 1.5.30 | 1.5.31 | 1.6-rc1 | 1.6-rc2 | 1.6-rc3 | 1.6-rc4 | 1.6-rc5 | 1.6 | 1.7.0 | 1.7.1 | 1.7.2 | 1.7.3 | 1.7.4 | 1.7.5 | 1.7.6 | 1.7.7 | 1.7.8 | 1.7.9 | 1.7.10 | 1.7.11 | 1.7.12 | 1.7.13 | 1.7.14 | 1.7.15 | 1.7.16 | 1.7.17 | 1.7.18 | 1.7.19 | 1.7.20 | 1.7.21 | 1.7.22

I usually just create .pet files.
There are a few scripts that I find useful in creating sfs files.

createsfs | thread | download

I use the console to install packages from winetricks [> > >]
Code:

winetricks -h

In reference to menu entries, many of them launch executable wrappers (I think) to sub-programs in Wine.

For those that want menu entries, but ...'just one entry under Utility which leads to a menu of all the wine programs.' [>]

Another menu entry utility 'WineEnv' [> >]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wine usage tips:
- cd to the program folder, then launch program from there. As "mikeb" has mentioned, I have also found this to be accurate with several programs that would not launch previously. [post | page]

- I use a separate wineprefix for each windows application that I install.
reference: Can I store the virtual Windows installation somewhere other than ~/.wine?

I place all wineprefixes outside of the savefile, somewhere under '/mnt/home'.
For each application, I use:

# WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix winecfg
(let wine create the last directory; in this example it would be '/wineprefix')

# WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix wine application_installer.exe

(I put the following in a script, for when I run the application)
# cd "/path/to/wineprefix/drive_c/Program Files/application/"
# WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix wine application_launcher.exe"

PostPosted: Fri 22 Nov 2013, 00:18    Post subject: Wine 1.6.1

my attempt at compiling wine-1.6.1

wine-1.6.1-i486_v1.1.pet _______ puppy 431 | stripped=true | mirrors
wine-1.6.1-i486_v1.2.pet _______ puppy 431 | stripped=false | mirrors
wine-1.6.1-i486_v2.1.pet _______ racy puppy 5.5 | stripped=true | mirrors
wine-1.6.1-i486_v2.2.pet _______ racy puppy 5.5 | stripped=false | mirrors
wine_DEV-1.6.1-i486_v1.pet ____ puppy 431 | mirrors
wine_DEV-1.6.1-i486_v2.pet ____ racy puppy 5.5 | mirrors
wine_DOC-1.6.1-i486.pet _______ mirrors
wine_extras-v2.pet ____________ menu entries | mirrors
md5.txt and hashdeep.txt ______ mirrors

Note: Click on "mirrors", then click on ">" for a download page to the respective file.

If you are not going to submit bug reports to WineHQ, I recommend packages that are 'stripped=true'
If you are going to submit bug reports to WineHQ, I recommend packages that are 'stripped=false'
When submitting bug reports to WineHQ, it appears a 'stripped=false' Wine provides more information than a 'stripped=true' Wine. [references]

puppy 431 ->

I compiled using puplet: Puppies 4.31.1 by forum member 'ttuuxxx'
_________ mirrors _________
/distro/4.3__1/puppies-431.1-main-Xserver.iso
/distro/4.3__1/devx_430.sfs

This puplet uses glibc 2.6.1
The Wine files listing 'puppy 431' will possibly not work with a glibc before 2.6.1
To see what glibc your puppy has.
Code:
ldd --version

I installed these packages (as one sfs file) before compiling:

To see what glibc your puppy has.
Code:

<- racy puppy 5.5
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When compiling, I used
Code:

./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --build=i486-pc-linux-gnu --x-includes=/usr/X11R7/include --x-libraries=/usr/X11R7/lib --with-x

Menu entries, Color Setter, and other stuff I got from the file 'winegoodies.tar.gz' provided by forum member 'technosaurus'.
I only made a few changes to the contents of that file.
