Image
3 systems X 2 Languages (Simplified/Traditional) X 2 input method platforms (fcitx/SCIM) = 12 pets

Please see first posting under this subject for download addresses.

Snow Puppy 020 was released on May 18, 2013

The pdf user manual and change logs were also updated to include these new pets. These are available in English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.

precise 5.7.1 was released by Barry on Aug 3, 2013. This is a bug fix for 5.7 (released on Jul 29, 2013), fixing 3 main bugs:

1. Non-US keyboards
Under X, all applications on first start use an US layout keyboard. Exit and restart the application will give a correct keyboard layout. (This should not affect computers using a Chinese environment)

2. External optical media
when an external USB optical drive was plugged, the drive icon did not appear on the desktop

3. Playing DVD videos
when play DVD video with Gnome-Mplayer, just got a blank window.
Mostly fixed but still has a problem with DVD menus -- to get it work properly and set the correct video-out mode, just open Preferences window and then close it

I have tested the Chinese Language pets and happy to report that precise 5.7 Chinese Language pets can handle precise 5.7.1 already.
However, I found a bug in one of the Chinese Language pets: precise-5.7-zhhk-fx-7.2.1.pet (Traditional Chinese; fcitx)
Start menu will display a few not yet translated English terms.
This bug was fixed and the pet replaced.

I have also tested the universal half-Chinese Language pets and found that they can handle precise 5.7.1

I have just uploaded 14 new Chinese Language pets/debs to the public sharing folder for 3 Puppy systems using the LXDE desktop: simplicity 13.7 desktop/obsidian and lxpup-14. Please see first posting of this subject for download addresses.
The names of these pets are:
Image
(A) 8 pets are for simplicity 13.7 released on July 23, 2013, a system developed by the simplicity development team lead by David Purse.

It comes with 2 versions,
Obsidian has Firefox 22.0 browser, LXDE and PCManFM file manager
Desktop has more applications including Skype 4.2, LibreOffice 4.0.2, VL 2.07

more information: http://simplicitylinux.org/
download SimplicityObsidian137Release.iso (169 mb);
http://sourceforge.net/projects/simplic ... o/download
download SimplicityDesktop137Release.iso (452 mb)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/simplic ... o/download

(B) 6 of these are for lxpup-14 which was made by Jejy69 and released on July 20, 2012
lxpup-14 uses slackware's Gslapt and can access slackware packages. Unfortunately, it cannot install Puppy pets easily and so lxpup-14 Chinese Language pets were done in debian debs instead.
This solution was formed after some discussions with a few visitors posted in #13328 to #13339 of the discussions in the Chinese Puppy Discussions forum http://www.minilinux.net/node/2545

I want to make use of this opportunity to thank everyone who had participated in the discussions and for their contributions.

I had a review of my work on the Chinese Language pets. The number of pets released since June 30 is 110 in 45 days.
Now I have to prepare myself for a 7 weeks trip during which internet connection is limited and out of my control, upload ability doubtful and might not be available.
Please therefore adjust your expectations about the Chinese Language pets accordingly. My connection will return to normal around mid-October.

(B)precise 5.7.1 is one of Barry's official Puppy released on Aug 3, 2013.
I have already posted information about precise 5.7.1 on Aug 4, 2013 including download addresses. In that posting, I mentioned that precise 5.7.1 can use the Chinese Language pets for precise 5.7 and so no new pets were made. A bug was found recently and so a new bug fixed batch of Chinese Language pets are produced.

I have tested and confirmed that the universal half-Chinese Language pets already released can handle both slacko 5.6 and precise 5.7.1

Also updated are the 2 pdf documentation files, written in English, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese:

#68 Post by icake »

A bug was found and a suggested solution was reported by a no-name visitor on the Chinese Puppy Forum.
This bug affects the 32 bit osmo program under Traditional Chinese (zh_HK) locale and affects 15 of the 18 groups of 32 bit Traditional Chinese Language pets. All Simplified Chinese Language pets and 64 bit Chinese Language pets are not affected.
The bug causes osmo to crash and unable to start under zh_HK.UTF-8 locale.

Affected 32 bit Traditional Chinese Language pets Puppy systems:
1. Dup Squeeze
2. Dup Wheezy
3. lupup
4. lxpup (for 13.01 only, not affecting lxpup 14)
5. macpup
6. midnightsun pup
7. precise
8. quirky
9. racy
10. raring
11. slacko
12. snow
13. upup precise
14. upup raring
15. wary

The following 32 bit Traditional Chinese Language pets for Puppy systems are not affected:
16. carolina
17. linalite
18. simplicity
19. lxpup 14 (but lxpup 13.01 is affected)

I have made and uploaded a patch (zhhk-osmo-patch-7.2.5.pet 0.3 mb) to the Traditional Chinese pet folder to correct the problem. Please see the first posting of this subject for the download addresses.
What the patch.pet does is to set LC_TIME=zh_TW.UTF-8 and add the necessary zh_TW.UTF-8 locale files

To apply the patch:
a. start up the Puppy system with the already installed affected Traditional Chinese Language pet
b. install the patch.pet by double click on the patch.pet file
c. restart X after the installation of the patch.pet is finished

I want to thank the unnamed visitor again for the time, effort and ideas to discover and resolve this bug.

I have to thank the no-name visitor on the Puppy Chinese forum again for finding another better, simpler and more direct solution to get around the bug of osmo not able to run in zh_HK locale.
Let me summaries the facts about this osmo bug:
1. due to utf8 format problems, osmo (the personal calendar tool) cannot start in zh_HK locale, which affects versions 7.2.5 and earlier 32 bit Chinese Language pets
2. Simplified Chinese, half-Chinese and 64 bit Chinese Language pets are not affected
3. the bug is in the osmo source code and has been reported and discussed on osmo websites. It was fixed on osmo version 0.2.10+svn922-2
4. Puppy uses osmo version 0.2.8. Upgrade to version 0.2.10+svn922-2 requires many extra library files, some are difficult to find and so a temporary solution is needed
5. the no-name visitor has suggested a few get around methods to solve the bug
6. Based on an earlier method, a patch.pet file zhhk-osmo-patch-7.2.5.pet (0.3 mb) was made and uploaded to the public sharing folder "Traditional Chinese pets". It resets LC_TIME=zh_TW.UTF-8 and adds the required zh_TW.UTF-8 locale files
to install the patch.pet, first download the patch.pet, then:
a. start the Puppy system with the already installed affected Traditional Chinese Language pet
b. mouse double click the patch.pet file
c. after installation has finished, restart X
7. a better, simpler and more direct method, also suggested by the no-name visitor:
no need to install the patch.pet, just change a "0" to "1" on line 29 of the file /root/.osmo/config.xml,under section <general>,
from ==>: <override_locale_settings>0</override_locale_settings>
to ==>: <override_locale_settings>1</override_locale_settings>
save the file and that is all

fcitx chewing (新酷音)

#70 Post by csshin »

Dear icake,

I am trying to include chewing (新酷音)in fcitx but no idea how to. Could you point me some directions, or better if you could include chewing in your next release of the chinese half package for puppy that contains fcitx.

Thank you for your help

I tried to add chewing in the fcitx Chinese Language pets but ran into some troubles.
However I was able to add chewing in my SCIM Chinese Language pets and a scim-chewing-0.3.5-2.pet (2 mb) was made and posted in the public sharing folder:

chewing for fcitx

#73 Post by csshin »

I have tried your new pet. It can enable chewing and the first run is basically smooth.
Thank you very much for your effort.

However fcitx always misses the keys (from time to time, randomly) when I type too fast in libreoffice (4.1.0). By this I mean if I type "zai",sometimes one of the alphabet, say a, goes directly to libreoffice and fcitx only catches "zi". This is not restricted to chewing but occurs in googlepinyin and pinyin as well.

After first run and reboot. Strange things happened. My desktop background turned grey. All the desktop icons becomes inverted triangles and all the words (english and chinese alike)become empty square. I tried to reinstall from scratch several times. Sometime this happened and sometime X-window cannot start despite all trials with xorgwizard. I guess it might be a bug between my pc and 5.7.1.

Based on the information you posted, I have tested:
1. English Puppy precise 5.7.1 frugal installed
2. added precsie-5.7.1-zhhk-fx-7.2.5.pet, restarted X, reboot
3. added fcitx-chewing-0.2.0-2.pet, restarted X
4. reboot, everything normal

so I cannot repeat your problems.
Your slow keyboard response, plus the strange desktop displays might be caused by insufficient ram.
Puppy plus Libreoffice needs 700 mb ram, do you have 700 mb from ram + swap?

I have 2 G ram.

Anyway, after a lot of testing, I concluded that it is not a problem with the Chinese language pet. It must be the new version of precise has something incompatible with my pc system. Anyway I now settle with Precise 5.4.3 and Chewing runs smoothly (except with the dropping alphabet problem). I use pinyin but almost all Taiwanese need Zhuyin (Chewing). Thank you very much for your help again.

By the way, is there any way to remove Shuangpin, it keeps being included despite my effort to disable it in the profile and deleting the sp.dat etc.

To remove Shuangpin from the list of available input methods under Chinese Language pet with fcitx-420:
1. edit the file /root/.config/fcitx/profile
2. find the line that starts with "EnabledIMList=..." (around line 17)
and change the parameter after shuangpin from ":True" to ":False", e.g.
from ==> EnabledIMList=XXXXX,shuangpin:True,XXXXX
to ==> EnabledIMList=XXXXX,shuangpin:False,XXXXX
3. save the file and restart X server, or reboot
4. similarly, you can turn on/off any other input methods from the selection list by changing the parameter True/False right after the name of a particular input method
