Slightly off topic, but Barry wrote this in one of those links...
You might be interested to know that the PCMCIA slots in a 1995 Twinhead laptop running P1-266-MMX supports my ethernet connection without blinking an eyelid, detected it on start-up with 2.02 and 2.10, using a Belkin card with a dongle on a short cord. I was trying to fix a problem on it for a friend and took the opportunity to boot it from the CDs, nice and fast too

What I was after was the sort of GUI application that puts up a window where the user can search for, then select, inspect, and finally use the character they need - that isn't available with a button-push on the keyboard layout they have chosen to use. Useful for people who write and use foreign accented words and symbols (for example euros, £ pounds) from time to time. (I do) Useful for people on IRC who communicate with others and try to use bits of their language, place names, etcetera (for example København and Köpenhamn, the capital of Danmark from a Danish and Swedish perspective). (I do) I'm sure that there are equally many other usages. In MS Windows 3 through to 98 it looked like this... 
which was tidied up a bit for 2000, like this... 
and one can see it here, from Sun's Java Desktop System... 
which shows what you were asking being able to be done at a GUI without having to open a console and remember the code. I believe that applet Sun used is not proprietary to them (although they have said they have opened JDS) but is part of the SuSE opensource code. I have a feeling I found one in KDE once. I'm sure that there is one available somewhere that could easily be incorporated... there must have been a demand for it at some time

Yes it's my prefered window manager for puppy. When the released of Puppy 1.0.4 with fvwm95 as the default, I fell in love with it at first sight
Can we try EDE v1.1 or could someone create a dotpup for it? I see SaxonOS is using it. Very cool!

Got what? Actually the ability to expand the JWM menu structure beyound two levels, to mimic the Windows one. I went round in circles with poor syntax of my own dumb doing. I went to Joe's website and between what he posted me, and what I modified this evening, I have come up with the following, which was the first stage... 
You may notice that I've created two menu items out of the Shut Down - because that is standard in MS Windows. Makes sense to their users, so I guess they would expect it here. A bit more coding and I came up with the following... 
So, I'll go quiet for a few days while I work on this revamped menu - some might call it "dumbed down" but really it's just something the migrants from MS Windows would likely find less of an integration curve with. Here it is in the context of a look-alike desktop - in which the icons will probably need some changes - it's not a difficult job to redo the menu layout, but extremely time-consuming. The background is also called "bliss" like the Microsoft one. This one is actually the FreeBSD one. 
Barry's excellent wizards will come in extremely handy here as menu links in a number of places. Now I would like to create a Control Panel dialogue, but I suppose a Rox directory would do the job quite well. That is, after all, what the Windows Control Panel is anyway. Sorry about the slow progress on PuppyPro, I've been quite busy this week. 
I have managed to come up with some workarounds for the Rox and XFCE backgrounds by using a session menu...actually works out better than what I had planned. Seems that the XFCE developers did a nice job with that one. So as it stands you can switch easily between XFCE and JWM with a single click. With XFCE, you get to choose between xfdesktop or the Rox pinboard. I changed the default mp3 player from madplay to Gxine, since while madplay is playing there is no "visible" way to turn it off. For a new users it is more comfortable to have gxine show up while playing any multimedia file. I changed the puppy start menu icon to the nice pawprint badge and it scales nicely with the XFCE tray. I have also added MU's Puppy Software Installer...very nice application! I modified the Gxine splash screen to warn about the flashing bug with JWM and ask them to switch to XFCE if the flashing occurs (that would be a very low tech fix, but effective I suppose  )
I hope to have a little more primping on the menus using some of Richard.a's suggestions to see if I can get things just a bit nicer. Please keep suggestions and current experiences with PuppyPro beta coming in. I will probably call this next release PuppyPro-beta2 with all hopes that it can be made the final version. I want to keep the beta on there for now since there has been the addition of some major components since the last release. I will be shooting for a release sometime this week! Thanks all! How long would it take to base it on 2.11? Barry has agreed to the name PuppyPro so "PuppyPro" / "Puppy Pro" / "PuppyPro CE" are all OK I will suggest PuppyPro for logos and PuppyPro CE in text should work OK . . . _________________ Puppy WIKI |

I guess PuppyPro is where we can benefit from LZMA, as we can aim to put it in miniCD with 180 MB capacity. Something to impress people with! OK, the higher capacity miniCD is 200 MB... So the suggestion will be to keep LZMA for PuppyPro. Anyway, only users of faster machines tend to think of using OpenOffice. _________________ Puppy user since Oct 2004. Want FreeOffice? It's very easy to remaster a LZMA-pup out of a version of Puppy that doesn't use LZMA and vice-versa. I've done it with my remaster-script. Rhino: I'm going to recompile XFCE on 2.10, in case you're interested in basing your iso on 2.10/2.11. |

This is shaping up really well. Is pizzagood's bootsplash going to be included? It has reached beta status and seems stable enough to be incorporated into puppypro. |
