Sound works in Puppy but sometimes not in Windows (Solved)

hello. new guy here. just installed puppy latest version with a frugall install.
i have 2 hard drives, on one i have windows and on the other i have linux mint 14, no dual boot.if i wanna boot linux i just boot it at bios. installed puppy in linux drive.
the good and the bad thing: sound works in puppy, when booted in windows i had no more sound,every thing is ok(card ok,driver ok), i even installed the sound card driver again to be sure, but still no sound in windows.
booted back to puppy ,sound is back.
question: did puppy intervened in windows or something went bad with windows itself?

PS: my motherboard sound is dead. only the sound card works.

PS2: (in win)I uninstalled and deleted (i thought might be some conflict or something)everything about sound,power off and miracle,sound works,even with no driver. back to puppy gonna try and duplicate the prob.

i could replicate the problem.
if i reboot from puppy to win i have no sound in win.but if i just shutdown and then enter win sound is back.

Your driver isn't loading because something has changed the initiation
process.


If I had this problem I would experiment with different boot managers
and boot loaders.

For instance Plop

If you are frightened of changing MBR, then you can burn plop to
a cd and boot up with it and then launch an operating system.

thx..i'll do just that and boot from cd(tried to make a dual boot and got fried. to scared to try again).
But can i boot puppy if have the plop boot cd and not puppy.(yes , i have frugall instal)
PS: i think i get.. install puppy on usb.. use plop live sd to access all 3 (puppy,mint and win)

My guess would be that the driver alters something on the hardware.

I would suggest to download some other Puppies like slacko or racy and try these.

Since you have Mint 14 and not 15 I would even suggest Puppy-4 .

One part of the sound driver loading at boot and unloading at shutdown is the /etc/[init.d/10_]alsa script . That had changed a bit from Puppy-4 to today .


I cannot believe that the bootloader would be resposible . Did you use the Mint bootloader ?

i'm not using the mint loader(cause there is none,only if i physically remove the harddisk containing windows,only then i get the mint boot),i just select the boot device in BIOS.
PS: the reason i don't use linux boot loaders(the MBR ones) is cause they mess with my xp sp2, and if i get a boot prompt in bios,windows will just not start. i tried installing linux inside windows,but i don't get the grub (boot) menu and just enter win.
PS2: i uninstalled mint 14 and repartitioned the hole drive and did a full puppy install(the windows hard is physically removed). it won't load and i get a grub rescue terminal(invalid system file).

Windows allocates a small amount of Ram to drivers.

In your setup some of this RAM allocation must be still allocated to
Puppy code. The RAM should have
been wiped clean when the reboot starts. It's probably done by
Grub or Grub4dos as part of startup process, but since you haven't
installed either of these boot loaders the proper way the wiping
of RAM isn't occuring.

When you run Grub4dos application from puppy the Windows hard drive
must be attached for the correct menu.lst file to to written automatically.
If you're an expert you can add to the menu.lst yourself.

If you're worried about your Windows drive being modified (like the MBR)
then try a Plop CD.
