[SOLVED] Not able to get 1280x1024 screen resolution anymore

Hello,

All of the sudden I can't get 1280x1024 screen resolution anymore. I have been on this computer setup a couple of weeks. Running precise 5.7.1. I was really thrilled to see that it booted into a 1280x1024 screen resolution from th cd the first time I tried it.

Normally I run a frugal installation from the HD. I have been quite happy with this setup. Yesterday I booted gparted_live to see of it would be able to shrink a trouble some windows XP NTFS partition on a troublesome disk. I was not able to with gparted on puppy. No success, and the same errors were reported by bparted_live as in puppy.

Now, after rebooting again I got trouble with the screen resolution. If I recall right the first run even indicated that something has gone wrong as I got cluttered icons and wrongly formated/displayed text. Another reboot later and the things are fine except for the fact that I can only run with a screen resolution of 1024x768. It's yhe same if I run from cd or with pfix=ram from the frugal installation.

Anny suggestions on how I can track down what went wrong? Suggestions on how to verify/test/check the graphics card is also welcome as my gut felling is that something went wrong with it.

What happens?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected :shock:

As I stated above.
It's yhe same if I run from cd or with pfix=ram from the frugal installation.
That is the part (I don't get 1280x1024 back, only 1024x786) that worries me regarding my hardware. But then again, I have seen similar behavior on another computer. At the time I thought some hardware was fried. And uhh, my glasses required me to use bigger fonts anyway. So I did not do anything to get the better resolution back. But when testing a tinycore installation I did get the the better resolution. I think I will try that this evning and see if I can find anny diffrences in loaded modules (i915 vs i810 ?) and xorg.conf.

Now I really need it back as I need the real-estate to be able to work properly.

Anny ideas?

From your last post.
Not sure if you did as I asked?

Boot the live Puppy CD using boot option puppy pfix=ram

This makes sure you do not use any save files, while booting the CD.

I am trying to see, if something could be wrong with the save file, of your frugal install or your Puppy.sfs file.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.... This is not what I expected :shock:

Post the content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf , and /var/log/Xorg.0.log , please .

Xorg.0.log is pretty huge, better attach as .bz2 or .gz or .zip file .

Puppy has some code to fallback to use the vesa xorg driver instead of the native one ( intel in your case I guess ) , if it does not find the driver in the expected location - and not to print a message about it .

Another problem might occur, if all of a sudden the kernel driver does not load as before by changed options : Look into /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf --file .

BTW installing HAL for lshw might break some things .

Sorry I'm so late following up on this. life intervened and then Christmas was all over me.

I have played around with some other distributions to see if I could figure it out. None of them, except tinycore, was able to run Xorg with 1280x1024. Tinycore turned out to run xvesa and was able to run with 1280x1024.

I use this computer only from time to time. But it has a decent screen And from time to time I need bigger real estate than the laptops can give.

To cut it short. Yesterday we had a power failure while the computer was on. When I booted it today.... Voila, to my surprise 1280x1024 screen resolution! Running from ram (pfix=ram) or with an old save file.

bigpup and Karl Godt. Thanks for your interest, suggestions and advice. bigpup I did as you asked both before my first post and before my second. I'm sorry I did not manage to communicate this in a good fashion.

I have attached the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log from the system as it runs now (kernel=/precise5.7.1/vmlinuz pmedia=idehd psub=precise5.7.1 pfix=ram) for later reference.
