Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the minor problem with Open Office is that MS Word does not read their proprietary files. Not an issue if you don't cross convert or if you choose to save the files as something other than the default Open Office format. I try to stay away from Word anyway, but it's tough when most corporations still use it.
