My report on Quirky 6.0

I highly recommend that you run Barry's scripts while in Precise 5.7.1
Read my experience below...

-There appears to be a bug in Quirky when running the
install-quirky-to-drive.sh script from Quirky 6.1.1
when quirky is installed on a hard disk partition(sdb8).

I tried several times to copy quirky-6.1.usfs.xz
to an 8gb flash drive. It appeared to be successful,
but when I used my PLOP CD to do the booting of the
Flash drive, I got the message that the Flash drive
wasn't bootable. I was close to giving up when
I remembered that the first time I had successfully installed
Quirky 5.99 to the same Flash drive, I had been
using the latest Precise 5.7.1.

So I booted up Precise 5.7.1 and using the same
install-quirky-to-drive.sh script and quirky-6.1.usfs.xz
I did the install and the flash drive was successful
to boot up with my PLOP CD!!


My conclusion is that there is problem with that script
when running Quirky 6.1.1 from a partition
/dev/sdb8: UUID="2be220f2-514f-4f88-87fa-233b0db7a3f0"
TYPE="ext3"

Perhaps the fat partition wasn't created correctly??

By the way I have been able to compile Cinelerra 2.2 (a video editor)
in Quirky6. I'll post it when I've used it more.

putting real libjpeg.so.8 into my library package

can Barry's install to drive script be used for any other puppies? that went nice..

not at the machine at the moment (dell netbook, 1.6ghz, 1gig ram, running off 32gb usb2 flash drive), but it was really very surprisingly fast for a flash drive install--doesn't seem to boot that much faster than 571 booting from HD, though.

upgraded from 612 to 613 at about the same time i was installing a libreoffice pet--the latter didn't work. xpad does, though. hosting the quirky6 files as BK makes them available (the devx pet from nluug came down as 500mb, so i used the ibiblio one, an as advertised 198mb).


is this PAE?


edit: can confirm it wasn't the double petting that mucked it up.

When I installed Quriky 6.1.2 and upgraded with package 6.1.3, I have identified a few issues but I cannot be completely sure that they are only my issues or that of Quirky.

1. The Seamonkey pop-up is on again... I could be going crazy but it seems that it was fixed in the unofficial 6.1.2 and came back in the official 6.1.2 and remains in 6.1.3.

2. Using Don's advice in the post above, I still received "Boot Error" after installing 6.1.3 and rebooting. I believe the issue is that I had more than one bootable USB on my computer at the time of reboot but I'm not completely sure. After pulling out the 2nd USB and rebooting, Quirky 6.1.3 booted properly. I have not seen the boot error since the reinstall.

The SDHC card was too slow so I installed to a partition on the hard
drive, working better now.

Hello.

I install Quirky 6.1.2 on panel computer. It's great distr! Almost everything is working well.
Forgive if my question seems to you silly.
I don't want to load some modules for more quick boot (for example all modules snd*, battery and some others).
I try to add its modules in BootManager to blacklist, reboot PC, but lsmod shows its in memory. Nonetheless these modules is listed in files /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and /etc/rc.d/MODULESCONFIG.
I can unload these modules with rmmod and load again with modprobe without any problems.
I think blacklist isn't work properly. May be I do something wrong or need to do something else?

It works well if you have a fast processor and lots of ram and hard
disk space.

Hi Don,

I installed your Cinelerra package and dependencies on Quirky 6.1.3. It looks cool but the stop, forward and back buttons in the bottom left window were giving me issues. Is this supposed to happen? I didn't read the instructions.

XBMC running under wine works well with the proprietary nvidia driver installed.

Billtoo, have you considered running openelec (a lean version of xbmc) vs xbmc on wine/quirky? I multi-boot openelec off of the same Quirky 6 USB stick with Precise 5.7.1 in it as well. Openelec runs lightning fast because it is running native on bare metal in RAM. It is also super easy to install - just put 2 small files (kernel and system) in the boot partition, create an ext4 partition for config/data, and add a syslinux entry - a somewhat similar approach to puppy's (except Quirky 6). Update is automatic as well.

I found a package of cinelerra 4.2 that works in Quirky6 and
many other Puppies. It's a very powerful video editor.
