How to run Media Player classic in Puppy?
Hello I'm a newbie to linux i have always used windows and the problem is I don't know how to run Media Player Classic. I installed WINE but MPC just doesn't work it crashes and closes and I don't know if it's a hardware problem because I'm using an old Toshiba laptop with 512mb of RAM and a shitty proccesor on Puppy Linux 5.6. I installed MPC not in WINE tricks maybe it's the problem. Can any one guide me through step by step ? Thanks in advice
What are you trying to do?
Being new to Linux is a fun time, but a hard time. One of the hardest things to do is to learn to let go of your old habits.
If you just want to watch videos, use the media player that comes with your Pup. Media Player Classic apparently won't work under wine no matter what you try. But you don't need it, as there is a bunch of Linux replacements.
For info on what might work from the windows world under wine, it is good to check out http://www.winehq.org before doing battle!

Hi djdg313, I know coming from windows can be a difficult switch.
But trust me it's easier to get used to native linux apps (if there's appropriate equivalent) instead running windows apps.
wine alone will increase usage of your hardware resources for whichever app you run.
That said, there are perfectly usable media players for puppy (which are also cross-platform and highly rated for their performances on windows too - mplayer is already in your puppy version I believe and you can alternatively install vlc
Both good players, support more formats then mpc and will use less resources when ran natively from puppy.
They are stable - don't crash and wouldn't cause you problems.

For best performance you need the correct video driver for the hardware...that may already be the case or but for nvidia or ati you may find a better one.
When the video player is using the XV video output then all is optimal.
As mentioned mplayer or vlc will give you a better deal than mpc (fine on 98 but no gain for 2000 I found...its actually a (in)directx player with a couple or additions so under the hood its the same as windows media player with all that codec hell and gets bogged down by WDM audio)
Some more specs from that machine may help to get info to fine tune your setup.

Thanks every one but I don't know how to install codecs and Mplayer doesn't launch from the start menu and when I made shortcut on desktop it still doesn't launch. VLC launches but it writes that where is no codecs installed and it writes that where is no way to solve the problem. Also tried installing Gnome player Kplayer and none of these work.Aaaand it doesn't even play .mp4
You said you're using puppy 5.6, is that slacko?
mplayer in slacko plays mp4 without anything extra installed I just clicked on .mp4 video and it played... nothing extra installed just what's already in slacko...
mplayer and vlc already support many media formats without anything needed to install additionally, so I don't know what version did you install but the one that you already had installed from the begining plays mp4 as well as mkv avi etc...

there might be a program called hardinfo to list what you have.
Otherwise looking at the devide manager in windows might do the trick.
The focus in this case will be on video.
There is a command line lspci -vv too which you can run in terminal/console.
If we get to know the specific video card we can then guide you to a better driver if there is one, or confirm that all is as it should be already and the problem lies elsewhere.
