Some Versions of Puppy Linux contain a pinging facility by default, which is useful for keeping an internet connection “alive”.
Sometimes an internet service provider will drop the connection if there is no signal being detected.

The pinging facility comes from a website called icanhazip.com, and is used worldwide, is benign and is not considered a hazard to security.

This facility will be contacted by Puppy from boot, when an internet connection is initiated, then you can see what your IP is via Network Status Information on the taskbar.

However, some people are happy to do their own pinging, if required, so these are the steps to remove the facility in Puppy Linux:

Navigate to usr/local/firewallstate/ipwget and open with geany or a text app.

Inside the file is the following text:

Code:
#!/bin/bash

#used by firewallstate to get
#external ip from site

`wget -O /tmp/ipis.txt -q icanhazip.com`

# alternative
# `wget -qO- whatismyip.org`

Hash or delete the line

`wget -O /tmp/ipis.txt -q icanhazip.com`

Then save the file.

Then go out into the woods and gather three small pieces of willow bark, a mouse, a beetle and a sprig of mulberry, or some dandelions.
Arrange all items within a triangle made from the willow sticks and jump over the items thrice in a forward, backwards fashion, shouting, " i386, i486, i586".

Then the let the mouse and the beetle go on their way and you're done.
