How to use Tenda W900U USB adapter in 528?

#1 Post by pup2learn222 »

Old rig Toshiba Satellite A75-S213 Mobile Pentium 4 548 3.33 GHz 1.5 ram
Puppy 5.2.8, kernel 2.6.33.2 Frugal install
Tenda usb W900U wireless adapter. wikidevi info WI1 chip1: Broadcom BCM43526
lsusb in Console Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0a5c:bd1d

Hello all reading, trying to get this device to work in Puppy 5.2.8 seems to be a little irratating.
The only way I can see this in Puppy is I have to use ndiswrapper which in my thinking is stepping down to using G speed or maybe B of the card.

Speed test when in use is dismal to say the least 4Mbps aprox, where as the on board gives 9Mbps aprox.

What I tried so far, blacklisted ath5k rebooted machine with usb plugged in using Frisbee & the original network setup software Also tried plugging in after puppy was at desktop, all to the slow speed.

Now if I boot into winblowz I can get this going to around 50Mbps.

Not a fan of windoz just love my little puppy, anybody with wireless experience that can shed some light on this problem I seem to be having.
What am I missing (a lot)
If this card cannot adapt does anybody have one that does , brand model & what drivers & do you get full speed for Puppy.

Hi...

From what I'm finding online, it looks like your USB adapter is not compatible with Linux. Please see here and here, although I'm not sure why the ID numbers don't match up, though.

If I am not mistaken (which I easily could be,) you will need to either continue to use ndiswrapper, use your onboard adapter or purchase an adapter that can has a native driver for your version of Puppy. There are a couple ideas for adapters here.

But I'm curious, why not just use your onboard adapter if it works in Puppy and at better speeds? :?:

I think your right but it is relatively new hardware.

My son did me a solid when I was on vacation cleaning up all the snow around the house.
I bought him a router & a W900U, he is on Win7 , I am on Puppy/XP. He is a gamer & always complained about speed/lag wireless G. With his rig gets 50Mbps on speed test on internet.
Haven't heard a complaint since, 1 happy kid. I been on xp to do my emails & that software with the new usb flys, whereas before it was a slug by comparison. So if Windoz gets a boost like that Puppy will be a greyhound.

Not with your current USB adapter, it appears. :(

I didn't quite understand from what you were saying why you couldn't use your onboard adapter. Is it because the device is too new for Lucid 5.2.8?

Can you open a terminal and post the output of....

Code: Select all

lspci -nn
Perhaps your onboard chipset would work with a newer version of Puppy. :)

"I didn't quite understand from what you were saying why you couldn't use your onboard adapter."
The on board works fine but a bit slow & seems to hang at times in Puppy & seeing the new adapter in windoz & the speed it has well i would love to have a faster & more stable connection. My son had me get the faster cable connection & I am getting less than 1/4 of the speed I am paying for, all because of the wireless card in laptop.
I would have no problem replacing card in laptop but do not know if they will have one for the newer speeds or newer router of the times. I really like 5.2.8 puppy I would like to stay with it. I consider it a much better xp without all the updates & virus that goes with windoz.

PCI: 168C:0013 Qualcomm Atheros AR5212/AR5213 Wireless Network Adapter
supported by ath5k driver
https://wiki.debian.org/ath5k

Lucid kernel is new enough BUT it may benefit from a newer driver build. Could be done on the existing kernel otherwise newer kernel...Do check around the forum for any backported builds of the ath5k and note there are lucid builds with newer kernels that have appeared..It may or may not effect the speed you get compared to now.

BCM43526
ndiswrapper only and looks like it will remain that way.

Hi...

I think what MikeB said really hits it dead center. Again, apart from what he has suggested, you can try another wireless USB adapter that is compatible with your kernel. A couple examples were in my link above but there are more to choose from. There are a couple threads that deal with compatible wireless devices here. They will be the first two threads, "wireless / wifi cards confirmed to work in puppy."

You can also run lsmod to confirm the driver being used for the device...

Code: Select all

lsmod
Let us know how it goes. :)

So this weekend I purchased new w311mi says linux on package so were good right well not so good. Cannot see but in lsusb it is there as 148f:5370 I downloaded the driver pet for ra5370 & now I see the device & see the wireless but fails to connect. GREAT! Frustrating to say the least.
I had unloaded & banned ath5 turned off computer rebooted & SoS.
Maybe there is a quick fix getting closer I think.
wireless is open no encryption
What did I miss
As always thanks for your help.

Ok not sure where the broadcom comes in but worth checking perhaps.

More relevant is ndiswrapper which would very likely interfere with any other wifi driver present.

Its probably a leftover from other attempts (it would also interfere with the native atheros driver ) so needs disabling.

Not 100% sure where its triggered from.../etc or /var.....

Hi Mike
Was able to unload ndiswrapper but broadcom is ethernet I think.

Ok ndiswrapper gone.... you now have ath5k and the rt5370sta loaded ...still seems a bit too crowded for me (in theory workable but with usually manually set different subnets which is not going to happen with one router to connect to.)

So again try to only have one wifi driver loaded.....

This all seems close to working really .... as for the realtek sta drivers I have had them working nicely for a similar dongle. (rt3370)

For the heck of it I have another laptop by gateway, I plug this usb adapter that is linux ready & works fine no software. Puppy Precise 5.4.3 kernel 3.2.29.
So get a thought USB flash drive with PP, boot in toshiba & I can get it to work I blacklist eth 0 & wlan 0 reboot & ra0 can see wireless & connect.

So I go back into Lucid & do the same thing, when frisbee gets the fault with ra 0 it switched to wlan 0 by itself I even have it to ignore in frisbee.

Also when I go into more tab in wireless & look at the unload ndiswraper gets in there somehow even though I blacklisted it.

So this is the extent of my diag skills & at least I have a card that can be used.

In Precise with new wireless adapter seems a lot faster, but using seamonkey.
Well thanks again for all your help & getting late maybe by morning I will come up with another idea, or for that matter you will. Maybe I should remove Frisbee & retry

Hmmm I think since you do have something you can get working going back to the beginning might be a good idea.
I suspect by now you have 2 or 3 conflicting methods of wifi conection all competing....its happened to me too especiallly once ndiswrapper gets involved.

If you can start with a fresh save file do so and use the standard wifi wizard.... otherwise you will be hand picking out stuff and i don't think you are into doing that or indeed where to start since this stuff gets scattered all over.

Ok so on this machine Gateway, I have this set up with multiple puppy version frugal installs & lo & behold I tried the rt5370sta v2501 for k26332pet it does the same thing this machine is virtually clean in lupu 528 k266332.

so at this point here is what is loading in Precise 543 with k3229
lsusb maybe by comparison with trained eyes can see the problem or a work around

ok now we have an onboard it seems intel wifi card drive plust the rt2800 loading whihc will NOT work for that card ...has to be the STA

Disable the intel and blacklist the rt2800 stuff if the pet does not already do so.

Ok in every instance I see 2 wifi drivers loaded.... in the working case its for 2 different devices so no problem...you get to select one of them to connect with and in the non working its for the one device. You cannot have rt5370sta rt2800 as they will conflict...the sta is self contained and does not want any rt2800 related drivers loaded.

So i removed rt5370sta from machine so it cannot interfere.

rt2800usb is loaded but do not see wireless card in connect, driver is loaded because I forced to load at boot up & it is in the more tab for the
unload function so here is the list.
So now in 543 it uses rt2800usb but not in 528

rt2800 is unlikely to work.... only the sta for these devices....

I find that weird rt2800 is listed in 543 as driver being used but 528 doesnt see it when it is forced loaded & booted from cold.

As for the sta drivers t see's the wireless card & the networks but cant pass thru.

I think I even tried the manual settings from the working on board to the w311 in network connect.
I have 528 set up perfectly the way I like it (which took a long while to do) & really do not want to do the upgrade to 543 on this laptop.

I been also toying with the usb flash with 543 & starting to get everything setup. Maybe I will make this flash a rescue stick too.
Thanks for your help
