FatdogArm Beta1/2/3/4- 16 April 2016

Updated platform support for Raspi2 and Odroid-XU3/XU4.
FatdogArm for Raspi2 can now be used either using its own kernel package, or using Berryboot's, thanks to mories, see here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 052#898052.



Beta3 was released on 14 April 2015

It's an updated release, featuring some updates from upstream (Fatdog64), updated base packages (gtk updated to 2.24.27, seamonkey 2.33.1, etc), and new platform support: Nexus 7 2012 (grouper). OLPC XO-4 got SMP kernel support, both cores now can be used (thanks mavrothal for the info).

In addition, it has improved touch support: mtev driver is used, giving two-finger right-click emulation; easystroke and cellwriter and matchbox keyboard gives easier navigation on touchscreen devices.

I'm happy to announce the release of FatdogArm Beta1.

FatdogArm Beta1 is a complete-rebuild of FatdogArm, using LFS 7.4 as the base (glibc 2.18 and gcc 4.8.1). Platforms officially supported are:
- A10/Mele A1000
- A20/Cubieboard2
- Odroid-U2/U3
- OLPC XO-1.75 and OLPC XO-4.

FatdogArm itself is a port of Fatdog64 for ARM platform, supporting many of the rich features of Fatdog64; using Slackware-style package management (gslapt, slapt-get, pkgtool).

There are two major goals for Beta1 (both achieved):
1. Re-target the hardware platform: Beta1 now targets ARMv7-A with VFPv3-d16 (no NEON). This is the same target as Debian armhf and enables FatdogArm to run on lesser-endowed hardware (e.g. OLPC XO-1.75 or Tegra2-based systems).

2. Fully reproducible build system --- all "build recipes" are now coded and recorded and delivered as part of binary packages.

As a bonus, Beta1 supports 3D GPU acceleration for OpenGL ES for all officially platforms.

Those objectives achieved, throughout the beta cycle (which will consist of a few more betas) I will be aiming for stability and bringing more features from Fatdog64; aiming feature parity by the time we get to RC (whenever that will be).

Apart from the above changes, Beta1 is similar to Alpha4 including its software selection (there are only few minor updates for stability reasons). Since it is a complete rebuild, there may be things working in Alpha4 but not working in Beta1 (=regressions) - I'd like to hear about this so I can fix it.

Like Alpha4, Beta1 is also released as a "meta-distribution" (ie the ability to build your own base SFS *from scratch* - this is in addition to the usual remaster stuff); it is similar to Woof except that it can only build from FatdogArm's own packages.

Note: Beta1 now splits between "basesfs" and "devx" just like regular Puppies / Fatdogs. The split isn't as complete as Puppies - they are split at package level (in Puppy, the split goes a lot deeper - e.g. there is no header files in basesfs).

This release would have not been possible without help from mavrothal and 01micko who helped with testings and pointing out my idiocy during development. Thanks guys Image

Note that FatdogArm does not come with Flash player and probably never will, because Adobe does not freely distribute ARM version of Flash player unlike in x86/x86_64 platform.

Anyway, I can vouch that its working pretty good on Odroid U3.

Maybe at Easter I can dust off Pandora.

so awesome.. like how you are pkg it. Looks like a good day to have high speed Internet. 8)

Going to finish clearing out the hybrid highspeed harddrive and see how thar works. Going to try a triple boot UEFI, BIOS and Mele (Sdcard booting then switch to harddrive to run ) .. wish me luck.. :roll:
Finally got my remaster bluray Nvidia multisession master working for 630.. 18percent cpu running HD mp4s is the lowest this machine ever did...

Hi people,
I bought a Odroid U3 from Hardkernel and want to run FatdogArm on it, I used a 8Gb microSd, deleted it's partition and created a new partition 16Mb from sector zero, new partition formatted to fat 32, copied fd-SFS to it, then extracted u2-odroid-tar-gz kernel to it, ran dd if=u2-bootin of=sdb1 seek=1
All seemed to go without errors, put the microSd card into U3, apply power,
however the blue led on U3 which is used to indicate boot process is not activated, I am using Beta1 of FatdogArm.
Other O/S such as Ubuntu and android boot normally so the Odroid is OK but not the noob installer :cry:
Any ideas :?:

use install script. the skip at beginning is odd and questionable. boot code expects to be at a give place not 16Ms offset. But I have no experience with Odriod setups. And may not get one till end of year...

Assuming that your SD card is addressed as "/dev/sdb" (make sure that this "sdb" doesn't point to your harddisk or anything else or it *will be destroyed*), then the "dd" above should be:

Note it should be directed to /dev/sdb and NOT to /dev/sdb1. If you have already done this, your /dev/sdb1 is already corrupted and you may as well delete the partition and start again.

If I understand right then you had no space before the 1st partition? In all cases some space is needed before the first partition for the boot sector. In odroid's case a minimum of 5 MB is needed, you can even do this in gparted. I have used fdisk, cfdisk and gparted. Make sure you read the release note and try to get an understanding. Any problems, well you did the right thing asking here 8)

The error on my part was leaving /dev/sdb1 instead of /dev/sdb :oops:
On my TV/Monitor the screen was three quarters displayed, I ran xorgwizard and now have full screen, beauty nice albatross.
I created 2 partitions, one fat32 1024Gb and one ext4 for the remainder of the 8Gb microsd as per jamesbond recommended layout and the save file is stored there. I have no internet access yet although seems to be detecting eth0, will try to create route. I have the Odroid wireless dongle, which is not recognised yet.
Thanks to all who replied, hope I can help the FatdogArm users in the future

prompt:

I've been sick so I'll be brief. You need both fd-arm.sfs and devx.sfs; devx.sfs alone will not work (that "bulldog linux" is busybox-based mini OS running from initrd).

As for your wireless, most likely it won't work because of missing firmware since I only put firmware for two dongles (I don't have hardkernel's dongle). Please post your "dmesg" and "lsusb -v" output so I can figure out which firmware it needs; then you can download these firmware files and drop it to /lib/firmware to make it work.

wifi dongle.. OK IT SOUNDS WIERD BUT I USED FATDOG64 ON MY LAPTOP WITH WIFI DONGLE usb device and after successfully using it to hook to my access point just copied the resulting etc folders and used them on my Mele.. its was just a setup script issue ( not.same on Arm version ) not a running dongle issue for me..

Are you planning to actually support apt-get? I know its not the Puppy-way, but it would be really, really nice if the normal Linux distribution tools were more fully supported and configured out-of-the-box.

The One Hundred Dollar Question..... do you think this distribution is stable enough that I should run out and buy an Odroid to try it?
